Maybe I'm confused, but how is it possible to become pregnant after a hysterectomy? Wat exactly is a partial hysterectomy? Isn't that when they leave the ovaries, but remove the uterus? Is it possible to get pregnant without a uterus if you have ovaries and tubes? How ould you know? Don't they sew the top of th evagina shut after a hysterectomy? How can sperm get in?

My question is - was it JUST the ovary and fallopian tube removed, or was the uterus removed as well?

No, it is NOT possible. Your cousin "Brandy" did not have a hysterectomy; if she had, she would have no uterus, so she wouldn't have been able to carry little "Blake" to term. Your cousin had a bilateral oophorectomy, which is the removal of one or both ovaries.

People, the bottom line is this: women who have had just an ovary or fallopian tube removed can still get pregnant, but women without a uterus cannot carry a child to term. And if your doctor used the term "hysterectomy" to describe your surgery, guess what? You don't have a uterus to carry a child. So no, you cannot get pregnant and have a child if you have had a total or partial hysterectomy.

There are several degrees of hysterectomy, including:

Partial hysterectomy – the bulk of the uterus is removed, but the lower end of the uterus, the ovaries, Fallopian tubes and cervix remain.
Total hysterectomy – the entire uterus and cervix are removed, but the ovaries and Fallopian tubes remain.
Total hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy – the entire uterus, cervix and one or both ovaries and Fallopian tubes are removed.
Radical hysterectomy – the entire uterus, cervix, ovaries and Fallopian tubes are removed, along with associated lymph nodes and the top-end of the vagina.

Now, if you had a partial or total hysterectomy, there is potential for you to have an eptopic pregnancy, which is very dangerous (as in life-threatening). An eptopic pregnany occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself to anything other than the uterine wall. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the Fallopian tube (so-called tubal pregnancies), but implantation can also occur in the cervix, ovaries, and abdomen. And contrary to what you may have read in the National Enquirer or the story you heard about your sister's friend's mother's cousin, a woman cannot carry a child to term in her abdomen.

Yes, an abdominal pregnancy can be carried to term. However, this is rare and can be life-threatening to the mother. It can also cause deformities in the baby as, for example, the intestines press against the baby's face. I cannot imagine any competent doctor deliberately causing or facilitating such a pregnancy.

So, if you've had a hysterectomy and think you might be pregnant, see a doctor--it is most likely something other than a pregnancy causing the symptoms. If you've had a hysterectomy that did not involve removal of both ovaries, your best chance for a baby would be through a surrogate.

I had a partial hysterectomy done 3 1/2 years ago and the doctor that did my surgery said that my uterus was hanging on, like it did not want to be removed. When I asked him after the surgery, if he was able to remove it he hesitated but said yes, but I felt like he was hiding something , like maybe he could not remove all of it, but stitched me up anyway and I have always regretted having this surgery. The reason why I had it done was because my monthly cycle was unbearable and he said that I could have my tubes burnt instead, but there was no guarantee that it would work and I could come back years later for the hysterectomy, but I was so afraid of having to get surgery done with the anesthesia and all, and prior to the surgery he did a dfferent surgery that was unsuccesful with stopping the heavy bleeding, so I opted for the partial hysterectomy with removal of the uterus because I did not want to have to go through the heavy bleeding and surgery again if getting my tubes burnt did not work. Now I badly want another child with my husband and I wish I never had the partial hysterectomy done. The only way for me to be able to have another baby is through a surrogate carrying me and my husband child or for a miracle, like maybe the doctor could not remove my uterus and one day I might be able to have another baby, although I know that sounds crazy because if I still had a uterus I should at least have a monthly cycle even if my wound is stitched up right? Anyway, My heart goes out to all of you ladies that have had to have surgery to remove apart of your reroductive organs. I wish you all the best of luck with getting a surrogate to carry a baby for you. As for women who visit this site who have not had the hysterectomy surgey done, I advise you to always try other options if given the chance because this surgery is irreversible and if you love children, like I do you will regret not be able to bring a life into the world or in my case another because GOD has blessed me with 2 beautiful children and I am so thankful that I was able to have them before getting the partial hysterectomy done.

This is a strange subject and one i am happy to read about because it happened to me... i had a sub total hys when i was 31 due to the lining of the womb shreading and causing untold issues. i then had burst apenix when i was 41 yrs which was touch and go and my insides where a mess with absess's. then a yr later i went to use the loo because of a weird feeling in my tummy only to see a 12 ish wk fetus still in the sac , i was horrified and because i didnt present the baby to the doc i wasnt taken serious(i regret to say and i dont know why i did it... but after holding the fetus in my hand i decided to say a prayer and flush it away, all i could think about at the time was the docs would send it to a lab and do god only knows to it). i suffered with tummy problems for a yr with adhersions from all the operations and had a surgery to tidy up my insides (scars) they found a mass which they couldnt explain and they left it there to be obsorbed by my body which i know was the placenta. i felt preggers at the time and took a home test two times which both showed up negitive. i have pregnancy signs again which frighten the life out of me but tomo i will be going to docs and making sure i am taken serious(i have a lot to live for and it can be life threatening). this does happen and docs dont like admitting its a possibility cause its so rare..... it dosent always show on urine and blood test so i will be asking for a scan.... dont let the docs make you feel embarassed for thinking you might be pregnant or even make you feel like your crazy for asking if it is possible. they are there to look out for you and treat your symptoms. MAKE SURE YOU ARE HEARD!

my name is emma-jane. I had a hysterectomy 7 years ago. I still have both my ovaries. I got my hysterectomy to prove that we are able to regenerate cells within our own bodies. I had my first period in 7 years last week and it lasted 2 days. I also have all the symptoms that are shown in pregnancy. I believe that faith and the will of mind make anything possible. So bless all the women who have had hysterectomys to have the faith and belief they will again be with child.

I meantioned to my mother today that my nipples were really sore. I have never had sore nipples even when I had my son. I had to have a hysorectomy after him due to DIC where I was free bleeding and my uterus wouldn't close back. They left my ovaries but my mom said there was a lady on the news a few years ago who had a hysterectomy and became pregnant. I have always heard that you will have a miscarriage if this happens but my mom said that the baby attached to the womans kidney and she delivered it. Is this possible? Has anyone found an article on anything like this? I know how rare it is
