Hi,
My wife, who has had severe alcohol problems for the last year has decided to go to treatment. They will take her in on Wednesday. Today is Sunday. I want to cut her off completely from alcohol because she goes into a stupor when she drinks. Is it safe for me to do this for a few days until I can get her to treatment.
No, it's not safe -- a severely addicted alcoholic should be under medication before stopping completely like that. I know this answer is a bit late but may help others with the same question.

im very sorry and i learned about this exact thing in health class. talk to a doctor and see if you can get her on Antabuse(Disulfram)
This may sound horrible but it could be an only option
Disulfram/Antabuse causes unpleasant effects when even small amounts of alcohol are consumed. These effects include flushing of the face, headache, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, weakness, blurred vision, mental confusion, sweating, choking, breathing difficulty, and anxiety.
BUT BE WARNED Never give disulfiram to a patient in a state of alcohol intoxication or without the patient's full knowledge. The patient should not take disulfiram for at least 12 hours after drinking. A reaction may occur for up to 2 weeks after disulfiram has been stopped.
