Hi there . I was about the same way at the 9 and 10 month in. I still have anxiety but it becomes easier to deal with and its not as bad as it was when I first quit. I couldn't even go to the supermarket because the bright lights and speakers etc would really set me off. I had the chest pains also and thinking every little ache and pain was something major. But It gets so much better. I would go see about your gums because smoking we really can screw up our teeth. But good li=luck and keep us posted

Good for you Ken. I'm at 2-1/2 years quit and still have anxiety from time to time. I never knew what anxiety was until I quit and developed it. None of the doctors could really explain why either. To them, all symptoms should have been gone after a few months. Well I'm here to say wrong. But I guess I feel better then I did when I smoked? When i quit I was feeling perfectly healthy. I quit because I did not want to be tied down to when was going to have that next smoke and where would I be able to have it. Also, I was real tired of smelling like an ashtray. So I guess that is where the big plus is for me. I just hope health wise it was no too late since I smoked for about 30 years. Who knows what the future holds since I did smoke for so long but as of right now it's nice not being a smoker anymore. Keith

I think they are afraid to tell people about any negative effects of quitting smoking for fear that people will be afraid to quit smoking. That it will discourage them from trying to quit.

I too smoked for about 30 years when I quit I have been quit now for about 1 year. Sometimes I feel like I am sicker now that I've quit but I know this will pass. I can tell you I have watched family members that kept smoking past 3 years actually another 20 years and develop serious health problems. My aunt passed away this year at the age of 60 from complications of COPD. My grandfather also passed away from complications of emphysema at the age of 60. My mother has later stages COPD and she is 64 years old. So I think that since I have quit that is a good thing I am 45 now so I am hoping that I didn't wait too late also.

Spot on. Non smoker after 25+ years 1/2-1 pack a day. Elevated levels of fear anxiety depression and indigestion. Guess moving completely across the country to a new job after on of 20 years did not help. Stay strong.

I am just writing because it's good to follow up and give hope. I stopped smoking one and a half years ago. As most of us have said, it was a terrible experience. I suffered anxiety, loneliness, I was weepy and irritable at any small thing. My gums bled even when not brushing, but the worst was the acid reflux. I had a terrible, continuous pain in my right upper abdomen. No tests revealed anything. I was on medication for months until I started seeing blogs where ex smokers complained of these same symptoms and them not getting any relief from medication. I immediately stopped taking meds. I read a lot on the internet about the kind of foods that are better for this condition etc. Today, I feel much much better. The pain comes once in a while especially if I eat food that has tomatoes often. I also prayed a lot for healing. I can say for sure that my prayers and my diet are what have helped me till now. My gums are also much better but not perfect. So those still struggling, hang in there, there is hope and healing. And as Keith above, says, it is my prayer that the future will be well for us. Cheers, and Happy New Year! grace.

I have posted before but here is the update. Today (Dec 28th, 2015) I am 10 months and 10 days into quit. Though I feel a lot better what I felt during the earlier months, it is far from over. I have occasional chest pains which are not at one spot but are sporadic, some time on the left side, some times on the right side, sometimes on the back below the right shoulder blade. The biggest problem is anxiety which comes and goes, though it is hard to guess the cycle. However, I can say with confidence, the intensity of anxiety attacks has reduced over time. As a matter of fact, I didn't recognize it as anxiety until into my eighth month. The anxiety is accompanied by occasional nausea, especially after breakfast, spikes in blood pressure, shortness of breadth, a feeling of something sticking up the throat and increased production of saliva. I have so far not taken any anxiety medication but am seriously considering it. If there is someone who has used the anxiety medications (how long), I would appreciate any feedback. Acid re-flux is also a problem but is not constant. It also comes and goes and I have not been able to identify the trigger. This forum has been a great help and I will continue to update. I wish everyone health and full recovery.

I lasted 2 weeks on the anxiety pills and stopped. For me it was making me feel very zombie like with no emotions at all. That was 2 years ago. From what i read, it takes a good month or so for them to really work. The doctor said if I continue it to give it a year or so. no thanks. Like I said before, I still have weird feelings from time to time but does not last more than a few minutes. w/o meds you really learn how to cope with those feelings and I feel will make you stronger in the long run? But that's just my take on it. If you really feel you need it then give it a try, you can always stop. Keith

First, stop going to the ER. I'm sure they have given you test which came out fine. It's just anxiety. If you read the posts most of us have been through it. If you are on anxiety meds, you need to give it time. Could be a month or so. Unless it's a fast acting med like xanax. Forget the doctors to help you through this because they think you can quit and be done with it. Just take it a day at a time. Deep breath, take hot showers listen to relaxing music and you will feel better in time. Just don't go back to smoking. Keith
