I had gum graft surgery 4 weeks ago on my two front teeth.  After 5 days the lower mouth piece that was put there to protect the sutures came off and I noticed a gap between my two front teeth that had not been there prior to the surgery.

At this point I thought that I had chipped my teeth somehow.  I phoned the dentist and told them of this gap.  I said that I wondered if I had chipped my tooth and asked if the cleanser would make my teeth brittle.  They said that the solution was fine but did not give me any reason as to why I had this new gap.  I felt a little silly so I did not ask about it any further.

Yesterday I finally figured it out.  My teeth are not chipped; the gums between my two front teeth have actually receded. I know that they have receded because I have before and after pictures.

Is this because they cut the gums away during surgery? Were they supposed to put them back up?  Will my gums in this area come back up?

When I went for my follow up check-up they said it was healing so well it was "textbook".  I said that my teeth feel numb and they told me that it is just part of the process.  I do not feel that my teeth and gums are doing well at all.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with my teeth?
