Mine didn't show up on a CT scan with contrast but it showed on an MRI with contrast. I had Seton drains for two months and had surgery last week to repair my RVF s. All was well for three days and now I have pain again and gas escaping from my vagina as well as light bleeding. I called the surgeon who said it was normal. I didn't mention the gas as it wasn't too bad at the time. It has become as bad as when I had the Seton's in. Mine were the result of surgery to remove a Bartholines cyst from my cervix. They perforated my bowel in the procedure and did not listen when I said I had an infection. This is my third surgeon in three months. Does anyone know if gas escaping after surgery is a sign it has not worked or normal.

In addition to this I have already gone through menopause so gas is not menstrual related as some people have stated in their recovery process.

Update on RVF repair. I am three weeks post surgery. Discharge got really bad. Turns out I have an infection. Discharge ongoing. Am back on antibiotics. Was supposed to settle at the two week mark. I'm convinced they don't really know how to fix these issues. Pain has settled but I have to constantly wear pads. Having gone through menopause and the joy of not wearing pads monthly, having worn them constantly for 9 months now is distressing, not to mention very uncomfortable. Especially during summer. I'm guessing my surgery hasn't worked. I've had some strange things come out of down there. One was a small rectangular thing that looked like onion skin, but softer. It was an orangy brown colour. I'm wondering if it was part of the flap. Then yesterday I had a darker piece come out. Dark grey in colour but smaller. My surgeon's appointment isn't till one month after surgery. Bit long winded I think. I'm considering getting a second opinion as his point. I've had 5 ops in 3 months. Between that and the meds my body is not doing too well.

I have put an update on my surgery up if you care to read. Can't really suggest what to do. I think this sort of thing is very hit and miss. I've had two surgeon's work on this part of the problem so far. The first was hopeless. Jury is still out on the second one.

I just saw your message. How did the surgery go? I wish I have waited with the procedure - it only got worse for me after the surgery. I am trying some diet changes right now. It just won't stop draining and hurting...

If you have gas coming through you still have a small hole and it's still a fistula there. I have a high up fistula and I am the same gas coming through. I thought I had a low one and got it taking out, but after my MRI scan they found another one. Am hoping with this being small it could close. If not I will be having a op and getting a stoma bag that is reversible after it's healed.

I had a 4th degree episiotomy with the birth of my son and ended up with a rectal-vaginal fistula. I was told I had little chance of it healing on its own and that a typically non effective surgery was in my near future. I'm now 5 months postpartum and my fistula has mostly healed and I currently have little to no symptoms. There is hope for healing!

Hi it’s been 7months since I delivered my little one. After 3 weeks of delivery I started feeling heavy pain down there and discharge started to come out from my vagina. The doc said stitches have opened up. N asked me for a surgery. I got it done. Was on antibiotics for a week. I felt finally i will be ok.. but to my surprise I saw a small hole in between the vagina and anus n next day it started getting infected. My doctor asked me to take more antibiotics. Still no use. I Got MRI done n it confirmed tht I have rectovaginal fistula. Got the surgery done a week back. Day before one stitch came out. Showed it to the doc, he said it’s good that the stitch came out because it will allow that liquid to come out. But yesterday the stitches came out. I am so scared. Don’t no what will happen

Hi - can I ask? Did you get told that once it has healed on its own it is healed for good? Mine has healed itself but someone told me it could re open over years etc ?

Hii mums, just thought to add my story. I had my baby February this year, about 3 days after the delivery, I discovered the worst , feaces was coming out of my vagina in massive proportion in addition to gas. I was so sad. I was wheeled back to theatre and the tear was repaired. The whole surgery didn't take up to 1hour. 2 days after the surgery, I was passing out feaces in the toilet and I heard a pop, i felt the inner stitches open up and voila! Gas started coming out front. I slid into depression. I managed the condition for 2 months but couldn't take it anymore when i had diarrhoea and woke up to liquid feaces on my pad from the vagina.
I went in for another surgery under general anesthesia. ( around 10 weeks postpartum). This had to be it God, I pleaded.
I was on liquid diet four days before surgery and three days after. Then I resumed low residue diet.
On the sixth day over the night, I passed gas frequently and it injured the stitches I guess. The whole symptoms started again. Gas moving forward. I was frantic, almost running mad. My husband and mother were really tired. Here I was, not yet over the pain of surgery, yet it had failed.
I them realised at that point that science/ medicine was limited.
I remembered I've headed people talk so much about faith. You see I'm a Christian bi I've never really fully believed in the full capability of Gods power to heal.
I remember picking up my bible to read Mark 14:14. Where the bible says if we ask God anything in Jesus name, he will do it. I also read where the bible recorded that Jesus bore my sicknesses and by his stripes I was healed.
So that fateful day in the afternoon, I knelt down and prayed to God. I cried out to him in Jesus name to take the disease away and make me fine. I told him I just want to be happy again and free to enjoy my baby. I them acted in faith and threw away the remaining antibiotics. I also ate a full strong meal that afternoon and evening( the first in almost twelve days)
Guess what! The next day (a Monday) I woke up and found out that I farted and it came through the right way.I couldn't believe it I checked and checked day after day till I was tired of checking. No more fart, feaces, not even the slightest pressure in my vagina while having BM. Till today I'm still 100% asymptomatic. I'm writing this because there may be someone there like me who's tired of battling with this horrible condition, I assure you that in 100% of 100% of anyone who prays to God in Jesus name asking for a miracle. And does not doubt in his heart that he has received his healing, he WILL be healed.
Pick up your bible and pray now. He will answer you.
I'm still perplexed at the fact that I'm fully totally 100% healed.
Warm hugs Julianah
