Red, swollen, peeling skin around vagina??

A couple of days ago i woke and felt a burning down below so i went to the bathroom and checked it out, the skin around my vagina and lips was bright red and burning, i put some canisten on it and later that day i noticed the skin had swollen to almost twice its size, i continued to apply canisten but after a few days the pain has got worse so has the itching, the swelling hasnt gone down and now i have noticed the red skin is peeling away??? i havnt had sex in 3 months but a couple of days before the symptoms started i was put on ibs medicine, could this have caused the problem?? and should i just carry on applying the cream?
