Hello, good people. My kid who is 6 years old started with sucking his thumb. I really don’t know what this means, but I am little worried. Some people tell me that it can mean a regression in the child. Would you agree with this? I would really like to know what you think about this.
Hi, there. Thumb sucking can have various reasons. First, it can mean that your kid has some dental problems. Maybe some permanent tooth is growing. Maybe he has an oral problem like infection. On the other hand, it can be caused by some neurological problem. You are right. Thumb sucking can represent a regressive behavior since it belongs to primitive reflexes. That is why I recommend you to take him to a doctor. I hope everything will be all right.

Hello. I find this interesting topic. I agree with the previous post. Dental problems can be the reason like they were with my kid. He started sucking his thumb when he was 5. I have read an interesting Freud’s theory. He finds thumb sucking as a form of expression of kid’s sexuality. It is like kid gets an orgasm in this way. However, we all know how Freud’s theories are. I hope I’ve helped.

I know this is an old post but hoping you can respond...my 5 year old has started sucking thumb and looking up information on it. What dental issues were causing the thumb-sucking? He has an appointment in November but considering moving it up if causing this. Thanks!
