I'm from New Zealand and replying to the many questions about a salty mouth. I too have suffered very recently and have been absolutely miserable. However, I have found a 95% solution and am no longer bothered by this problem. I went to my general practitioner and demanded a swab for thrush even though she said she couldn't see any in my mouth. I said I had had a lot of antibiotics this year (for an infected tooth, with has finally cleared up) and that I felt I had thrush both in my mouth and down my throat into my stomach.
The swab was positive. I have a course of anti-fungal tablets and have to suck (to the end) four a day. I noticed results after only one day. My mouth has softened, I do not feel sick any more and - MOST IMPORTANT - I can barely notice the salty taste - only ver slightly, first thing in the morning. Another GP has told me that the taste buds can get a virus that affects taste. He has told me to rinse my nasal passages with a dilute solution of salt - half a teaspoon of non-iodised salt in a cup of warm water; lean over the sink, flick up the nose and snort it up, leaning to the side a bit as well so it goes right through the sinuses. Then, blow the nose, one side at a time, holding down the other side. I am doing this twice a day.
I hae noticed a dramatic improvement in my condition. Only last week I was feeling totally miserable and I really want to pass this on to anyone feeling as miserable as I was.
I really hope this works for you. I think in my case the thrush was either causing the problem (I also have post-nasal drip) or was making it a lot worse because the dry thrush mouth was magnifying the problem.
Do the above and make sure you take all the tablets properly and keep up the nasal flushing.
I really wish you well.
Cheers
Marg
