My neighbor is a stocky, 53 year old schizophrenic. I'm in a house, he's in a house. A fence is between us. He attacked my grandfather a year or so ago with a pitchfork in my yard, before I lived at the house. My grandfather luckily escaped, with $1000 damage to the hood, windshield, and driver's side window of his SUV (the attack was attempted as my grandfather had just entered the vehicle). The schizophrenic believed my grandfather had killed his father, thus was exacting revenge. It took several cops to pepper spray him, bind him, and arrest him, and he was wielding a knife. He began yelling at me from his backporch a few weeks ago. The cops picked him up a few days later and took him to the mental hospital for a few days (not because I called, but because the person who checks on him decided he had gotten off his meds). Now he's back, continuing to yell, and has begun to accuse me of killing his father. His family (who live elsewhere, his mom nearby) is not answering their phones and it's been a week. I called the police (non-emergency) to report the situation, but no result. Should I learn to tolerate the rantings, and hope he doesn't attack (keeping my gun nearby), or is there a civilized option?
Sounds to me as if you should call the police and report it as an emergency situation because of your neighbors past behavior. Or at least call the police and ask what channels you can go through to get some help in this situation. Maybe even file charges through the prosecuter's office.
He might even be on probation being court ordered to take his meds due to the incindent with your grandfather. You may want to contact the probation department and inquire.
This is serios stuff! You should not have to "tolerate" his threats and irratic behavior. He is a danger to you and society.
Best of luck.

Call the police every single time this happens. Not the "non-emergency" either. I would insist that these episodes be documented every time they happen.
You should not have to live in fear within the confines of your home.
And you should not have to let a gun be your protector. Although if this person came on your property and invaded your home, your darn right i would have to excercise the use of the gun.
Keep calling the law and tell them that you should not have to be afraid. Maybe you can some how reach out to his care giver.
