,,then wen u see shiny white lump [cyst sack] , try either to squeeze it out or grab with tweezers , once out ,youll see perfect shape round sack .. the white pus is inside ,, then thats it ,, clean up blood , [i burn cyst . it pops or goes bang like a fire cracker , u no the rest ,,keep it clean ,,should heal in 3 days ,, if anyone needs a grafic video i made of removal . ill be glad to pass on ,, good luck

I'm getting pretty concerned about my scrotal cyst now.

I've had it for three years. It started off like all those cysts you see on Google Images - small, smooth, like a tiny pebble was inside. Over time it has grown, perhaps in part to me fiddling and stretching it without being aware.

Now it hanging off the side of the scrotum, like a small ball in a stocking. There seems to be quite a bit of fluid in there, veins are showing on the outside, and it is getting a little sore at times.

Thinking the point is nearly here to get it removed. Extremely nervous...I hate visiting the doctor.

I know how you feel. I left it years before finally getting my cysts looked at, but trust me, you have nothing to worry about. Dealing with uncertainty long term is a hundred times harder than the short term worry of getting the thing looked at and if need be operated.

My advice - get that appointment booked in now (today) and go for it! You will be fine.

Benjamina: Thanks for the reply. Any stories you can share from your experience of cyst removal? I am wondering whether my doctor will be able to remove it on the same day as the appointment (he has the facilities at his surgery to do it), or whether he'd need to check it first and then make a follow-up appointment. Also, could you tell me how long the excision(s) took?

Thanks for any pointers!

Hi Panther - happy to share.

I had my op done in the UK so it may be different depending what country you are in. As far as I know, its unlikely you will have it done on the day of getting it first looked at.

I had a general anaesthetic (I was put to sleep for the op) but I know you can have a local anaesthetic (you are awake for the op) for smaller / less cyst removals. If its a local its less of a big deal so it may be just a walk in/ walk out job.

The process for me was 3 appointments start to finish, on 3 different dates. 1. meet the surgeon for an diagnosis/assessment (20 mins) 2, attend a pre op health check (10 mins) 3, go for the op (5 hours from arrival to departure).

I think I was actually being operated on for about 40 mins. The rest of the time was waiting for the surgeon to get to me on his list of patients that day, then a few hours of being monitored and recovery from the anaesthetic.

I had eight cysts removed. Some pin head size, the largest was about the size of a very large pea.

The post op pain was relatively minor. In fact I was back on my bike on a cycling holiday within 2 week. I had some pain killers but they were largely unnecessary...re pain it was just some mild aches for a day or so and then some stinging for a few days (think paper cut type stinging - minor).

I healed really quickly and didnt need a check up post op.

All in, it was the best decision ive made. I put it off for ages and in the end it was so very simple to address and i didnt feel uncomfortable or embarrassed at any point.

It may be different if they have a surgery. Best just go see him/her and see.

BTW - What I didn't realise before getting this looked at was that apparently 30% of men experience this on some level, so it a daily occurrence for the surgeons to see it.

Hope that helps.

Good luck...not that you need it! :)

Benjamina, thanks very much for the detailed reply! Hugely appreciated.

I am in the UK too, so your advice is particularly significant to me. I just have the one cyst, but it's grown into a monster after three years of fiddling with it. I'd probably say it is the size of a cherry tomato, but surrounded by a lot of fluid (the hanging sac is very "squidgy") - brrr.

I have been searching for nearby GPs who specialise in urology and minor surgery. There actually is a GP nearby who fits this criteria and says that he can do that form of surgery. Given that it is just the one cyst and would presumably take place within the clinic, I hope it would be quite a short piece of business. I'm hoping that given its increasingly-impeding size that the NHS would do it free; that said, I'd be pretty much willing to pay what it takes to get rid.

Now the only thing I have to do is, sigh, muster the courage to get this done with. It would involve switching GPs, so forms to fill in, and then I think one must subject themselves to blood pressure/urine tests at the new clinic. It's been so long since my last check-up that it just feels like another hurdle to leap!

So, an update.

My big cyst had been hot, red and sore for the last few days. I think I discovered why this evening - it finally breached after three years.

Compared to the last few days, the soreness almost completely disappeared today. Didn't think much of it, but did notice a white spot on the cyst. Later in the evening I noticed the entire cyst area was sticky and a little wet. Then, completely by accident, that white spot turned into a burst of white, cheesy pus as I was inspecting the cyst.

I kept squeezing as one would do with an acne spot. It didn't dawn on me that this might not be a good thing - I guess I was just excited to finally reduce the size of the cyst, and it was a very painless (almost natural-feeling) thing to drain it of the pus.

Now I am left with a shell of a cyst. It is like a large, dried up raisin. There is a sense of "structure" within this raisin, which I guess is the shell/roots?

I could really do with some advice on what to do next. Should I leave it alone? Should I seize the initiative and try to take out the seed? I'm not sure the doctor (on the NHS) would operate on it now that it looks so weedy and pathetic.

I've had them since about 20 - every year or two a new one appears or grows back. The balls of sack contain stringy thick rubber material - best suggestion was on page one and I did something similar beforehand. Find a needle - poke the ball in the middle and squeeze to get the stuff out. Ideally you can then pull out the empty 'sack' thereafter. If not I'd wait to see if it heals on its own or just get to it after the initial wound heals.

Expect blood but not that much - Id say there was more after biting nails than taking out 3 cysts in 10 minutes.

Make sure to disinfect the needle/area with some form of disinfectant - I used rubbing alcohol.

Hey Panther - this is almost certainly the result of your cyst being infected, which again is pretty common and happened to me maybe twice in the years that Ive had my cysts.

Best to still get it looked at by your GP to get a view on it.

I'd strongly advise against self removal...based on the stories my surgen said to me.

One suggestion of what to say to the GP if you want it removed; removal by surgery is entirely your choice as the cysts are cosmetic, so not 'essential'. If you want it done on the NHS you have to tell the GP its negatively impacting your life, e.g your confidence, or your ability to work. I cycle alot to get to work and said it was preventing this which I think swung the argument (this is genuinely true so I mentioned it in passing at the time...I learned latter that this was a key part in me getting the op on the NHS).

Hi varunsteadyhealth - sadly, it cannot be cured. Its a natural thing that some people are pre disposed to. Its not dangerous and very common.

You can have them removed by surgery but this wont stop them developing again (though the older you get the less likely you are to develop them).

You can help slow the growth by washing regularly (twice a day) to remove the oils from your skin. one doctor also said shaving your testicles also helps slow growth...though when I eventually saw the 'expert' in this country on this topic he did not mention this at all so it may not be true.

Go get them checked by your doctor - it really is very common and nothing to worry or be embarrassed about.

Go for it!

I had them also growing up and I first noticed them or one of them when I was a senior in high school. i had no idea what to do and was embarrassed about it and one day I went to urologist and he took it off. I have had them two other times and I ended up being put under both times and both removed. It is quite common and the scrotum heals very well. I am not embarrassed anymore and don't have to worry about walking around naked.
