I don't think it's a disease, I think it's a sensitivity to something in the water.

It's possible the problem is pollution in our water.  Water is contaminated with drugs and chemicals that are flushed into our water sources. I originally found that I got the itching not from the water but from towels that had been treated with a softener. Softeners are chemicals. It doesn't happen to me everywhere. I travel for business, but I live in a major city.

I find putting clothes on as soon as I'm dry soothes my skin. Otherwise it's a strange and ghastly dilemma. I may try to put a water purifier on my shower, if I can figure out how to do it and will post if the problem stops.

So far the thing we have most in common among all us sufferers is HARD WATER.   That would explain why I don't itch after swimming in our pool but just when I take a shower.   Our pool chemicals soften the water.  Try showering in soft water.

I was so frustrated... I went to my doctor who sent me to a skin doctor who sent me to an allergist and no one wants me a s a patient.  The allergist just told me to see a skin doctor.   They keep sending me around.  So I'm going to get a water softener and see if that works.  Allergy pills have lessened the itching somewhat.

Hi I’m a 22 year old male, and I’ve had this condition twice now, the first time I just dealt with it for a few years, then it suddenly went away so I didn't think anything of it, but then it came back and I’ve had it for the last 6 months.  My itch is most severe on my arms, and I itch on my chest and ribs two, I tried not itching because it's meant to make things worse but it's unfeasible, it reaches a level that's impossible to ignore.  I also itch uncontrollably when I start to sweat, which is worse than the shower because I run 5km 3 times a week to keep myself fit.

My only thought to this is it's something I’ve changed in my Lifestyle that has brought this back, something I'm eating or using.  I started looking at what I had changed, and I realized that my Girl friend had started buying different soap, but she couldn't remember what she used to buy, I went out and found the most simple soap with no perfume or any other added chemicals in it as I thought I may have allergies to something in the soap, it seems to make me itch less after showers and I don't itch noticeably when I sweat any more.  I find shorter showers and a simpler soap helped me, but I still think there's something I’m eating or using that is making me itch so the next step will be to change my diet.

It's nice to see I’m not the only one, I hope I could help.

Regards J.S

Hi everyone, I have had this type of itching since i was 10 years old, now I am 33 (male). The most interesting thing was for me, that people from all around the world have the same problem, this is making me doubt that it's an allergic symptom, or we should try to find what is all around us?
I live in Hungary, my mother has the same problem since she was a girl, so the chlorine as a reason is not acceptable for me, because when she was a girl she lived in a village, they used to swim in a clear river for years, and she was itching at that time as well.
I use to have this usually in the summer, mostly in July, August and September, very rarely in other times, but it occurs in winter as well, but its not frequent.
I have it after a bath, swimming and sweating (even in lakes, sea, or swimming pool).
I've tried all the soaps, organic, anti allergen.....etc, nothing helped in this season.
What helped for me:
- DIET: No wheat, tomato, melon (i've found its worse after these foods, but if you change your meal, you need at least a week to have your body cleaned)
- SPORT: minimum 50 minutes, aerobe, 3 times a week
- NORMAL WEIGHT: when i lost weight, had sport 3 times a week, itching stopped for 2 years, now i gained about 15 kg and  it came back.

When i itch:
- i always have a short shower in the morning, quick toweling after it, and i get in a cotton t-shirt, and go back into the bad under the blanket, hopefully the itching stops after 15 minutes
- I realized that the contact of air is not good, when i itch.
- Almost never scratch myself, believe me you get rid of it sooner.

I am a 14 year old female so this can start out young. I know everyone is different but what works for me and I hope it might help others is that I use Nutrogena energizing body wash and after my shower I use vitimin E oil that usally does it. I have been having this problem for about a year and ive tried various solutions and this is the only one that has worked. Don't try one thing and think it's hopeless try many different solutions till you find one that works for you cause everyone's body is different. Hope this is helpful. :)

I tracked down the problem to an invisible (to me) mold growing in the shower head, water spigot and possibly in the grout in the shower tiles. I discovered that by spraying Lysol bathroom cleaner directly into the show head openings, and the spigot and by scrubbing down the entire shower area- walls handles etc with the lysol that the itching has stopped. The intense cleaning only has to be done once. After that I spray the shower head around once every 4-6 weeks and the problem has stopped. Try it and good luck!

I have just come across this site after typing in by chance itching after showering.  Firstly, can I say that THANK GOD there are people out there who know what I am on about.  I have thought for years and years that I was alone with this condition.  I have seen LOTS and LOTS of Dermatologist over the years and they are always baffled and have prescribed everything from Light Therapy to sunbeds, etc.  I have suffered with this condition for over 30 years, YES, THIRTY years and, even though we must shower daily, I approach it with fear because I know what's coming afterwards, intolerable itching which turns to pain.  The only time I don't itch is when I have worked out in the gym, only when I've trained REALLY HARD and sweated like crazy even though I itch while I am training as sweating seems to trigger it as well.  When I shower in the gym after training, my body seems like it is histamined out and I only feel slight itchiness but if I don't go to the gym and just shower at home, it is UNBEARABLE and to be quite honest, scary!!  Somebody please help either explain this condition or even better, tell me how to conquer it.  It has been so bad in the past that I have even contemplated suicide, AND I AM NOT EXAGGERATING!!!  This condition makes my life a misery and I am so glad I have come across this site and hopefully someone can help me or advise me.

I, too, have the same itching issue after showering. I used to think it was the hard public water but now I have well water and a softener and I still have the problem. As soon as I turn the shower off, I feel my skin crawl and I have to immediately pat my legs and arms dry (those are the two areas that itch the most). I've tried every kind of soaps and lotions but nothing helps. This has been going on for about 4 years now. I take Zyrtec everyday for allergies. I've been tested and I'm only allergic to cat dander, mold, and dust.

I also have severe itching as soon as I lay down to go to sleep. It's like someone is poking me with a thousand needles that makes my skin crawl and itch. I've tried not scratching but it's unbearable. The other night it lasted for 2 hours and I was actually sobbing because it was complete torture. I've changed my sheets, mattress pad, laundry detergents, etc. but it doesn't help. We even bought a new mattress and a new mattress pad 3 weeks ago but I still have the same problems. Funny thing is, I only itch on my legs and arms, nowhere else and I can't figure it out. I'm going to the dermatologist tomorrow (this is my 2nd time) to see what can be done. I do notice that it isn't as bad when I've been out in the sun so summer seems to be much better for me even though it is so bad for me in the long run. It is comforting that other people experience the same thing but it is also disheartening that there isn't anything that actually "cures" it.
