I, too, have the same itching issue after showering. I used to think it was the hard public water but now I have well water and a softener and I still have the problem. As soon as I turn the shower off, I feel my skin crawl and I have to immediately pat my legs and arms dry (those are the two areas that itch the most). I've tried every kind of soaps and lotions but nothing helps. This has been going on for about 4 years now. I take Zyrtec everyday for allergies. I've been tested and I'm only allergic to cat dander, mold, and dust.
I also have severe itching as soon as I lay down to go to sleep. It's like someone is poking me with a thousand needles that makes my skin crawl and itch. I've tried not scratching but it's unbearable. The other night it lasted for 2 hours and I was actually sobbing because it was complete torture. I've changed my sheets, mattress pad, laundry detergents, etc. but it doesn't help. We even bought a new mattress and a new mattress pad 3 weeks ago but I still have the same problems. Funny thing is, I only itch on my legs and arms, nowhere else and I can't figure it out. I'm going to the dermatologist tomorrow (this is my 2nd time) to see what can be done. I do notice that it isn't as bad when I've been out in the sun so summer seems to be much better for me even though it is so bad for me in the long run. It is comforting that other people experience the same thing but it is also disheartening that there isn't anything that actually "cures" it.
I used EURAX cream and it worked. Try it! I bought it on Ebay as here in US is only by precription. This will cure ur suffering. I hope it helps.
Do you know what the active ingredient is Jen?

Colder showers - no joy at all
Patting dry - not much joy
Various neutral body washes - no joy - perhaps slightly better
Steriod cream - very slight reduction but not much
Like Dr Jan, I found the pattern varied - some months were not too bad, some days almost had me in tears. I never itched in water - only after drying off. The itch (and this is how I described it to the Dr) was like a "poping and crackling", and not relived by scratching.
So even though I was sceptical, the static thing sounded plausible. I went and tried both a scalding hot shower, and drying myself very slowly. It was a revalation - nil itching. Nothing. Since then 3 months have past: I've found I can do without a hot shower (though it helps), provided I dry very carefully so as not to build static. Holding onto a metal fitting (large) seems to help too. I still itch on the odd occasion that I rush (like this morning!), but at least now I know what it is the odd time I stuff up doesn't stress me as much.
I think there are several conditions described in this excellent thread, but if you only itch after drying, with a "pop and a crackle", try toweling very very slowly, holding metal as much as possible, following a nice hot (does not actually need to be scalding) shower.
cheers all.

I get in the shower and as soon as I shut the water off I can start to feel it creeping over my body. By the time I dry off...my body is in full blown itch mode. Scratching and putting lotion on barely helps if at all. I have not tried antihistamines yet. I'm going to do that next to see if it helps.
Please let me know if anyone has prescription or otc product that worked for them. And please do not tell me to use moisterizer again it doesn't work. If you got itchy once after showering your not going through what we are so please don't waste the people that have a real problem's time.

my first thought it was because of the quality of the water.. with all those chemicals and bleaches its really hard on the skin..
it has been hell.every time i would take a shower it would drive me mad..its feels like having bugs chewing on your skin..really hard to handle.
all this months i have been spending massive amounts of money in lotions, shower gels, medication..you name it.. nothing never worked..
until couple of nights ago i read this theory..its just amazing..
this morning i went to shower and as soon as i finished i just left myself dry out..no towel no friction and no lotions..at all..just waiting until i dried out...and it f*****g worked..for the first time in months i didn't have the urge of ripping my skin of..just astonished about how simple it was..
thanks a lot for for the tips and the info.i m really thankful to you .
wish you all the best
god bless.
