I, too, have the same itching issue after showering. I used to think it was the hard public water but now I have well water and a softener and I still have the problem. As soon as I turn the shower off, I feel my skin crawl and I have to immediately pat my legs and arms dry (those are the two areas that itch the most). I've tried every kind of soaps and lotions but nothing helps. This has been going on for about 4 years now. I take Zyrtec everyday for allergies. I've been tested and I'm only allergic to cat dander, mold, and dust.

I also have severe itching as soon as I lay down to go to sleep. It's like someone is poking me with a thousand needles that makes my skin crawl and itch. I've tried not scratching but it's unbearable. The other night it lasted for 2 hours and I was actually sobbing because it was complete torture. I've changed my sheets, mattress pad, laundry detergents, etc. but it doesn't help. We even bought a new mattress and a new mattress pad 3 weeks ago but I still have the same problems. Funny thing is, I only itch on my legs and arms, nowhere else and I can't figure it out. I'm going to the dermatologist tomorrow (this is my 2nd time) to see what can be done. I do notice that it isn't as bad when I've been out in the sun so summer seems to be much better for me even though it is so bad for me in the long run. It is comforting that other people experience the same thing but it is also disheartening that there isn't anything that actually "cures" it.

I used EURAX cream and it worked. Try it! I bought it on Ebay as here in US is only by precription. This will cure ur suffering. I hope it helps.

Do you know what the active ingredient is Jen?

i have this curse for the last 2years and so i have learnt a few things about it. Before u take a shower drink water warm water and apply the same oil (yes before the shower) you will use after the shower i use really hot water if its cold outside and a really dry towel its works for me.  Scratching makes it worse dont scratch hope this helped

Went to the dermatologist and she gave me two creams to use alternating them every other day. One is a steroid cream and the other one is called Neosaulus and guess what??? They work! Not more itchy crawling skin!

incredible. I use the same technique with my itching. I shower with warm water and when i am about to leave the shower, i put the hot water as hot as i can take it, and i stay there for as long as i can . 30 seconds. probably. it works for me, i will not itch if i do this. I think the itch is bodyv temperature related. i have t his condition since 1996. And i think there is not cure for it. just to do the best you can to deal with it. I try different shampoos, but nothing happened. Hot water really hot te best cure for me.

I wish I could get some advice, too. Most writers are saying shampoo and soaps, but I have tried showering without shampoo and soap and it still happens,( especially on my back, which itches, stings and burns for about 45 minutes after a shower ). I think it is the bleach-type of additive in ALL water supplies. No matter where I live, in whichever state, it still happens .It even happened in Europe where the water supply did smell of bleach/ammonia.

I think I will have to find a home with a well! I am 67 and it is getting worse.

it is not a disease, it is what is added to he water supply to purify it..ie bleach type of additive. Would people who have a private well please tell us if they have this problem. It is not soap and shampoo.

G'day all. I would like to reply to this post as a huge THANKS to all those (especially the Dr) who finally pointed me in the right direction. I'm a 36yo male engineer and I've had terrible itching after exposure to water (rain or shower) for about 3 years. I went to the docs and tried:

Colder showers - no joy at all
Patting dry - not much joy
Various neutral body washes - no joy - perhaps slightly better
Steriod cream - very slight reduction but not much

Like Dr Jan, I found the pattern varied - some months were not too bad, some days almost had me in tears. I never itched in water - only after drying off. The itch (and this is how I described it to the Dr) was like a "poping and crackling", and not relived by scratching.

So even though I was sceptical, the static thing sounded plausible. I went and tried both a scalding hot shower, and drying myself very slowly. It was a revalation - nil itching. Nothing. Since then 3 months have past: I've found I can do without a hot shower (though it helps), provided I dry very carefully so as not to build static. Holding onto a metal fitting (large) seems to help too. I still itch on the odd occasion that I rush (like this morning!), but at least now I know what it is the odd time I stuff up doesn't stress me as much.

I think there are several conditions described in this excellent thread, but if you only itch after drying, with a "pop and a crackle", try toweling very very slowly, holding metal as much as possible, following a nice hot (does not actually need to be scalding) shower.

cheers all.

Andy

wow. iv'e been going on and reading about this itching ever since i started itching after showering.
first and foremost this simply is NOT a DISEASE nor is it a ALLERGIC reaction. as a 5 year  old can pick up from this is that its widespread i mean if it is an allergic reaction how come it affect is so widespread seriously i went over a hundred discussion groups on this topic, whilst that on dairy products or peanuts are so little or niche'd to say.
anyway my Discovery was that when your body is being smeared with soup or hair shampoo or whatever washing agent(take in mind they are not the cause!)not all is drained off from your body(from showers dispersed water droplets) their still is a layer of that agent on your skin which after drying yourself
thus making contact skin with towel rubs up that layer of soap(which explains if u actually rub some extract from your skin which is just the soup!)creating that horrible itching sensation which drive'd me insane!
however with this discovery it can be avoid by making sure all of the soup agent is cleared from body...how you may ask...dying to know...........................................................BATHING....its that's simple i swear to you will have no itching sensation..as when shampoo or soup is made contact with skin water immediately dissolves it and comes in contact with it.if you have bathed before or went in just after someone and you find what you think is their dirt on lining of bath tub well that is what makes us shower'rs itch as most of that  soup(and some dirt) are still clinging to your body.............but a bathtub believe me it will stop all the hairsplitting madness as it covers areas a shower may not......GUYS this  is plan A and it will work..................use presumably hot water for the best relaxing cleansing morning afternoon evenning and night ............no more running away from cleansing but rather to it i have never been happier i just wanted to realy share this with you guys i realy hope it makes life allot easier.

thank you

I have the same problem. Just started last year and I'm 27 now. Only happens in the summer. Today is June 20, 2012 and yesterday was the first day it happened this summer. Not looking forward to the rest of summer. Almost gotten to a point where I don't want to shower anymore!

I get in the shower and as soon as I shut the water off I can start to feel it creeping over my body. By the time I dry off...my body is in full blown itch mode. Scratching and putting lotion on barely helps if at all. I have not tried antihistamines yet. I'm going to do that next to see if it helps.

Please let me know if anyone has prescription or otc product that worked for them. And please do not tell me to use moisterizer again it doesn't work. If you got itchy once after showering your not going through what we are so please don't waste the people that have a real problem's time.

this theory just blew me away... i have been suffering from this itchy after showering condition from the last 8 months..give or take..because im living in the uk
my first thought it was because of the quality of the water.. with all those chemicals and bleaches its really hard on the skin..
it has been hell.every time i would take a shower it would drive me mad..its feels like having bugs chewing on your skin..really hard to handle.
all this months i have been spending massive amounts of money in lotions, shower gels, medication..you name it.. nothing never worked..
until couple of nights ago i read this theory..its just amazing..
this morning i went to shower and as soon as i finished i just left myself dry out..no towel no friction and no lotions..at all..just waiting until i dried out...and it f*****g worked..for the first time in months i didn't have the urge of ripping my skin of..just astonished about how simple it was..
thanks a lot for for the tips and the info.i m really thankful to you .
wish you all the best
god bless.
