So to add another thing to the conversation, I think it is interesting what people were eating as well. I have gotten this with red wine and liquor and wine coolers. I also just experienced this with liquor while eating buffalo chicken wings. There must be a connection here between the food and liquor though I have gotten this without eating as well.
I discovered about a year ago that if I took so much as one or two sips of red wine, I'd get a burning feeling along the left side of my face, along with flushing, and then an ache under my jaw - where the gland is. This ache goes for about 20 mins and then it disappears.

I was very worried, because painful gland/s after drinking alcohol usually point to Hogdkin's disease, and my mother recently passed away from this illness. So you can imagine how I felt when I discovered shortly after her death that I was having this strange symptom. I tested myself by drinking brandy and liqueurs. I found that although I get the painful skin on the face, at least I didn't get the painful gland (by the way, the symptoms are only felt on the left side of my face).

My doctor had no idea what this was, but when I showed her an article I found on the net linking a painful gland or glands after ingesting alcohol to Hodgkin's she suggested having an ultrasound of my glands. This I am scheduled to do this afternoon, and I am panicking and spooked out. HD is not hereditary, but because I lost my mother to it only a year ago, I am very impressionable and very frightened.

After having read this thread, I am a little more reassured that the pain can be due to alcohol intolerance, and I know that red wine has all sorts of preservatives in it, whereas brandy (which is pretty much straight alcohol) doesn't. Which means that maybe I'm reacting to the red wine only and hence this might be a simple allergy rather than HD.

Wish me luck all. I'm very scared right now.
Just thought I'd post too as I have been suffering from the same problem occasionally since I was about 12 when eating really sweet things (particularly while laughing). The sharp shooting pain suddenly runs from the bottom of my jaw to the area just below my ear on the right side of my face and is excruciatingly painful. Sometimes it lasts for a few seconds, while in other occasions, it can last for several minutes.

Nobody I've spoken to about it has ever experienced it before and I can find very little information on it on the web. Does it have a name? I would be extremely interested in hearing how other people are getting on with this, so please post back here if you hear anything new.
I have this same problem. Am experiencing it right now. I find that it occurs after only having just one beer. I never considered it had to do with food. Makes sense-- I always get it at pizza places when I have a beer with my food. Creepy. Would love to know more info.
I came across this post after googling for this pain I've had as long as I remember. I don't have any answers, but I may as well add what I know.

I'm 37 years old, and I've had this shooting pain in my jaw, same as the others. It happens 95% of the time after a meal, and drinking some sort of liquid. I'm not sure if it's alcohol specifically, because I know it has happened with just water too. Shortly after a meal, the moment I try to drink something, the pain shoots into my jaws and is almost unbearable. The only thing I can do is wait it out, maybe 30 minutes.

I do have allergies, mostly pollen related. I used to take shots for allergies as a child. I had my wisdom teeth pulled about 14 years ago, but I'm pretty sure this was going on long before then.

Sometimes eating a banana will set it off. A couple of bites and BAM, instant pain. But usually I can eat bananas with no problem.
I just did some more googling, and the most probable cause (at least I think) is what I found on this page:

patient.co.uk/showdoc/23069166/

Basically, it's salivary gland stones. When you eat a meal, your salivary glands produce much more saliva. When a stone is blocking (or partially blocking) the salivary tube, the saliva has no where to go and creates the intense pain, sometimes followed by swelling. Waiting for saliva excretion to subdue usually ends the pain.

Solution? Have a doctor take an X-Ray to confirm, and then have them removed by probing, sialendoscopy, operation or sound waves (newer procedure.)
I have the same pain. I just had mexican food and two beers. I think it's the beer that's causing it or me. I've had it with wine also. I'd love to know what it is.
i can't believe i found this - but wish there were answers! For years when i have a beer and then eat - i get pain about 10 min later. - does not happen often (i dont drink often) but sharp intense pain in jaw.
Have been complaining to my GF about this for months... comforting to learn i am not alone here...

I have found that it tends to occur less often with less mild wines..
Wow, gotta love the internet for lettng you know you're not the only one in the world with weird symptoms. This happens to me too - often with sour drinks (it just occured drinking vodka with lemon, hence looking it up!).

I found two options to deal with this:
1 - don't drink anything for 20 or so minutes and it seems to fix itself.
2 - hold a mouthful of drink for as long as possible before swallowing. This (for me anyway) hurts like hell up to 10 or 15 seconds, but seems to make subsequent sips much less annoying. If the pain returns, repeat holding drink in mouth.

I have no idea why this happens and it doesn't hapen all the time. No one else in my family suffers from this.
i dont think its because of saliva build up as that would happen regardless of drinking and would happen everytime u eat...

i also suffer and want an answer :-(
The salivary gland stone would definitely be the problem if you are drinking lemon juice. Anything tart like eating a lemon or a dill pickle would cause more salivation to build up.

My wife has just been to the doctor today about these symptoms. The doc suggested she eat a lemon or pickle and see what happened. She drank some lemon juice, and I could see her face swell up right before my eyes. The salivation was clearly blocked by a stone, causing painful swelling.

So lemon juice would be a much different case than regular eating or drinking. I'll bet if you try a dill pickle or simply eat a lemon, the same thing will happen.
Unbelievable. Have had this same issue for 20 years and just now looked it up. I asked my doc 10 years ago and he simply said, "Then don't drink alcohol when you eat." That's lame. Anyway I have a couple of tips that may help you!!

Drink water before the alcohol. You take a drink of water, then your adult beverage and then a bite. This works ok when you know you are going to have a few with dinner.

When you go out for a few, not planning on eating but then you end up getting something to eat? Just have a few more drinks before you order. I've found that if I have just a beer or two before I eat will always result in pain but bumping it up to three or four usually does the trick. Probably just because I'm half drunk and killed the pain!!

Try these and keep us all posted!!
I just want to say that I have also experienced these symptoms. It is like a tingling pain sensation that starts in the joint of the jaw and may run to the ear or down the neck. I only have it if I am drinking a beer and if I stop, it stops. Wow, am I ever surprised to hear of so many others who are experiencing similar symptoms. Now what is the cause???
Me too. I think we have discovered a disease not in the books!
