Responding to the guest with the swollen eye, I have the same problem and actually have it right now, woke up at 4am as I was aware of something feeling different (coz this has happened before), got up and looked in the mirror and there you have it, eye completely swollen.

I had pain yesterday in the left side of my face next to my nose and eye so I have no doubt it's related to sinuses, and my doctor always puts me on antibiotics to clear the sinusitis up, but that's coz he takes it seriously knowing my family has a strong history of bad sinuses.

Just wish I knew WHY my eye got all swollen, as I don't have a blocked nose, or any other symptoms...

This thread has been very interesting. I have had nearly all of these symptoms off and on for several years. It has gotten worse in the past 1.5 years. In particular, I have a puffy spot over my right eye next to my nose that comes and goes. I know it is sinus related. I took several courses of antibiotics about a year ago to clear up a bacterial infection. The really bad yellow stuff went away, but I was left with the puffy eye and clear discharge for the past year or so.

Since the conventional Drs wanted to do expensive scans, allergy testing, surgery and drugs, I was afraid and decided to seek out a natural approach. I have been going to a natural health provider who has helped diagnose the ongoing problem using kinesiology. I don't know why it works but it does. He has concluded that the problem is FUNGAL! Therefore, antibiotics will only make it worse. It is similar to a yeast infection in the sinuses, and in fact can be caused by an overgrowth of candida in the digestive system (caused/agrivated by antibiotics). These yeast can mutate, cause leaky gut and food allergies, and get into your blood stream. This would explain why cutting certain foods is helpful. It also may explain why alcohol can make it worse (yeast love alcohol). I have terrible digestive issues and haven't touched dairy, red meat, or coffee for 10 years by the way, and I still have the problem.

I have been greatly helped by taking oil of oregano, chinese coptis and other natural antifungal formulations. But as soon as I stop, it gets worse again. Interestingly, it got a lot better when I went on vacation last week, but came back as soon as I got home. I still haven't definitively found the root cause, but I am now beginning to suspect that MOLD is the culprit. My house is very clean and doesn't show obvious signs of mold. However, it is an old house and there were problems with the roof and minor water damage along one wall. I am getting ready to have the air in my house tested for mold, and then I am going to try a new filter for the intake on my furnace. They make special filters that remove mold spores among other things (dust, dander, etc). If you have these problems, removing any offending foods or other allergens is really important because it all taxes your immune system.

Well I hope all this is helpful to someone! :-D

Hello everybody,

I've been suffering from sinusites for the past 3 yrs. I tried taking antibiotics, but their effect did not give me long-term results. Just this week i was taking honey to suit my sore throat, and my sinusites was getting surprisinly better. I could blow my nose, and not feel it blocked afterwards.

I researched the internet, and found out that honey can cure sinusitis. I was taking about 1 - 2 teaspoons of honey a day. I used to mix it with my tea so that that taste of honey would not be that strong.

Hope you'll get better ppl :-) :-)

I love this blog/site. Been reading your stories. If you want to feel better read mine.... or tell me the name of a good doctor in the Detroit Metro Area or Midwest that may be able to save me.

Yeah... I get it. This is just plain garbage isn't it? I always had a little sinus trouble but nothing that couldn't be fixed by a bunch of psuedofed and an antibiotic.

When I got older and wealthier a couple of dentists had a party trying to fix my old fillings. I have great health insurance... so they took advantage of it.

They said my teeth needed crowns instead of those old fillings that were just ugly... they told me the teeth would crack if I didn't fix them.

I went in for a routine cleaning and came out with 3 crowns.

This "bad dentistry" has led to 4 root canals in my upper plate in less than 2 years.

The nice dentist who gave me the $8000.00 crowns never removed the amalgam from the old fillings. In other words... he killed 4 of my teeth in my upper plate.

As I spent 4 years in agony during the change of the seasons...The endontist just kept doing root canals - tearing out the inside of the 4 teeth and drilling holes up the nerves to alleviate pain - root canals which are all failing right now.

In the last 2 months I have seen 2 GP's, 3 ER doctors, Another dentist, A Maxillo-facial Surgeon, and an ENT 3 times. I have been on 6 antibiotics.

I am now en-route to see a specialist at the U of M. I have some nice cysts that have developed in my maxillary sinuses and the sinuses next to my eyes. The right side of my face is swelling, all my teeth hurt. I live on antibiotics. I've got ear infections and constant tinitus. I have vertigo from the inner ear infections. My right eye is red and sore, there's pressure behind both my eyes so I shoot steroids in my nose and I eat psudofed and ibuprofen to keep the swelling down.

If you look at my X-Rays you can see all the root canals broke the maxillary sinus walls and caused chronic infections and the specialists are throwing me back and forth like a tennis ball. No one seems to know if it's the teeth or the sinus or both.

I am angry because I read stuff on the internet about how they knew even back then that everything they were doing to my teeth was probably a bad idea - but they did it anyway.

I used to run 2-4 miles a day. I used to love life. I used to get a sinus infection once every 2-3 years and that was - like really no problem.

Now This - This IS a problem. I can't function without an hour nap in the middle of the day and when I do move - I don't really want to anymore.

I am completely convinced the dentists and the endontist did this to me. If you have sinus trouble and you go to the dentist - beware. I am facing some really nasty surgical procedures with huge risks associated with it.

Before you let anyone drill holes in your upper teeth if you have sinus trouble READ EVERYTHING associated with risks before you let them touch you.

You all have my prayers.

It is nice to hear that others have similar symptoms as I do. My sinus pressure is directly proportional to the amount of sleep I have had. Several years ago I explained my symptoms to my doctor. When I mentioned that mucous was clear and thick. He explained that for some people sinus pressure is a neurological response to stress that is not very well understood. He is the only doctor I've met that had heard of that before. I find that if I do get a really good night of rest the next day everything just drains out and I am suprised at how good I feel. I've found that drinking lots of water helps somewhat with the drainage. My bigges problem is that I'm pretty light sleeper and frequently wake up at night and don't get the rest I need. I've appreciated the suggestions.

Chadley28,
I too have noticed that my sinus and post nasal drip is far worse after a bad nights sleep. After a good nights sleep my sinus is much better.
I can't offer any suggestions as I too am a very light sleeper, but it was interesting to find someone with the same problem.
The 'neurological response to stress' theory is interesting. I've not heard that before. I will look into it.

There are things you can do for various types of sinus pressure and sinus congestion. I always try to find natural relief first, in order to avoid turning to any over the counter medications.

One thing that really helps me is using an aromatherapy eye pillow. It’s great for sinus headaches due to sinus pressure, as well as stress and anxiety issues. What I have to found to work best for me is an eye pillow, right out of the freezer. I use a peppermint scented one because it opens up my sinuses and that helps me to breathe a lot better and helps any sinus or tension related headaches. The cold flax seed inside the eye pillow surrounds my eyes and temples which helps to reduce swelling in the sinus cavities and around the eyes. The weight of the flax seed applies just enough acupressure to soothe and relax my facial muscles. The eye pillow also block out all light, when the pain is so bad it just makes you squint you eyes.

I searched online and found several sites that had them. The one I decided to go with was A Touch Of Satin. I liked them because their ingredients were organic, and that was important to me. They had an unbelievably large selection of patterns and I like the feel of satin on my skin. They also had a page on their site that talked about the benefits of their aromatherapy scents. They had lavender and that is suppose to be good for migraines. It was very interesting. If you want to check them out, their website is atouchofsatin.com Well, I hope this helps you and thanks for all the great insight you always seem to have on this site. Good luck!

Hi, I am one like you.. I have sinus problem for 5 years, I am 29 now. In the begging I didn't understand what was going on. I have done allergy tests and I am OK. I think that the most of the doctor don't understand how I (you all) feel..The sinus seem to be OK, so he or she can't see any problem. I have very dry eyes, my ophthalmologist cant find why this happening and of course pressure behind eyes.I have notice that somehow this begin. In my case I had a bad cold and after that i am until now with all these problems. Another thing that I think is very important is that my mother has same problems that means maybe the sinus problem is a heritage from our parents. Of course that is not true for all. lately I am trying to find out if stress is make the things worse, I believe that I feel better when I don't think my problems.. It is very important to find people with the same (big) problem and talk about it. I think It is the only way to find out more and maybe to find something that makes us do our life better..

I'm pretty sure it's stress to all of the above. I've taken about 2 years here trying to narrow it down. I had black circles under my eyes, horrible sinus pain. I got a full blood test and an allergy test. Problems were Low HDL, and allergies to dust, cocroaches, and bermuda grass. I took nasonex, didn't help. Once I realized that my sinus hurt the most when I was having a panic attack, I put the two together. Solutions are exercise, sleeping more, and things to clear your mind such as yoga or deep breathing. I cut out caffeine, drinking, smoking, eating anything remotely bad for me. The only thing I was still doing was working, and my job is EXTREMELY stressfull mentally... I'm always thinking from 5 minutes after I get up until 20 minutes before I go to sleep, and any time other than those 5 minutes and 20 minutes before sleep, my sinus hurts and I can't think straight. I'm slightly OCD and I'm somewhat of an overachiever with thousands of tiny little projects, always thinking of another thing to do. If I clear my head of all thoughts and concentrate on nothingness, the sinus pain goes away. Or if I just space out / daydream. I think society is just causing so much stress lately.

I too suffer from similar symptoms and have for many years. I finally found an ENT (Ears Nose & Throat) doctor that actually LISTENED!!!! Amazing but true. After having a CAT scan, I have found out that I have a deviated septum and very narrow nasal passages. I go in tomorrow for sinus surgery.

I found a website that may be helpful to all of you:
http://www.darkcirclespuffyeyes.com/sinus-nasal-problems-associated-with-dark-bags/

I don't know about the "dark circles" but if you are fatiqued, the dark circles usually are present. On this page there are links that address:
Aging, Allergies, Blood Circulation, Bone & Facial Structure, Fluid & Fatty deposits, Hereditary & Genetics, Health Problems, Nutrients & Diet, Rubbing eyes, Sinus & Nasal, Sleep & Fatigue, Stress, and Sun Exposure.

Blessings and prayers for you all!

To those of you who are chronic suffers you should go see an ent (ear nose and throat) specialist. they make be able to inject your nose or give you extremely strong nose sprays. Not the stuff you see on TV. Surgury is always an option but you need to first identify what is causing the allergic responses and deal with that problem first.

This symptom might be associated with a cold, or lack of sleep cause i have a newborn baby and a 3 year old. So if anyone else has suggestions let me know please. Thank You
