I am 26, and have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome since I was 14 or 15, though I never had a colonoscopy. In the past few months my guts have been hurting more than usual, it seems, so I saw a gastroenterologist, and have gave me a colonoscopy. As most of you are probably aware, I had to drink something the evening before to get my intestine all cleared out. There are different drinks, but I think they all amount to the same thing. In my case, it was NuLytely. I drank one glass about every 20 minutes, which was pretty close to the instructions. The instructions said, along with everybody else who has done this, that my first bowel movement should occur within about an hour after my first glass. Well, I didn't have my first bowel movement until nearly six hours after my first glass. I have not told the doctor about this yet because I haven't had my follow up appointment yet, and I didn't do much talking the day of the colonoscopy, what with the sedation. But in the meantime, I was just wondering if my case is not too unordinary, or if maybe I'm worse off than the average IBS person. By the way, my colonosopy seemed to confirm the IBS diagnosis. There were no polyps or uclers, just a spastic colon. Oh, one other piece of information that may help is that I usually go about 5 days inbetween bowel movements.
Anyway, what is my deal?
