But I have found a few steps that might help. Actually this is weird, and happens at mental level more than at the physical one. But it's expressed through stomach only, hence the steps below are to subside physical expression only.
1. Water therapy: The idea is cleaner the colon, more comfortable, confident you become. Drink 1260 ml of water as soon as you get up in the morning (preferrably before 6:30 AM) This helps clean the colon really well. Just make sure to drink that water at room temperature, slowly and continuously, so that it goes right to the bottom. Don't worry about excessive urination later. It will wane in a few days.
2. Stretch soon after you drink this water. Bend backwards and sideways for about 50 times. That will make water bang on the inner walls and flush the s**m out.
3. Do some yoga poses some 1 hour after drinking water. Something like Uddiyaan Bandha pose (which means exhale completely and pull the stomach inwards so that your back and stomach almost meet. Hold in that position for about 10 secs. DO NOT exceed a minute in any case)
These will make you (your stomach) give yourself an assuring signal "I'm ready to see off today's quiet situation"

Hey heather i have actually been dealing with almost the same exact complication as you described your brother going through. I've had a GI run diagnostics on stool samples and nothing has showed, they have chalked it up to IBS as well!! I just can't imagine living with this kind of discomfort for the rest of my life. I am very healthy by the way! If you have any remedies or could suggest anything i could relay to my doctor iw ould appreciate it!! Thank you!

If you guys really want to try something that works, then heed the Probiotic message.. eat healthy yogurt (with probiotics) or buy them like someone already posted above.. there's always a natural cure..

We just moved to Qatar recently and staying in a hotel till we get our own flat. couple of weeks ago, my husband started complaining form lower abdomen discomfort and his stomach was making lots of noises which still does with some cramps on the left side of his belly. He also had nausea and minor fever as well as diarrhea which lasted over 3 days. At first we thought of food poisoning or stomach flue yet he refused to go to doctor and tried to get over it with resting which helped a bit. He went back to work and was doing ok but was watchful of what he was eating. I got him yogurt, apple pudding and stayed away from fruits and fresh veggies for a few days. Strange thing is I ate what he eats but I didn't get sick. One thing with him is he doesn't follow a diet and the minute he feels better he goes back to the same eating habits which is coffee in the morning and on empty stomach, red meet when ever available over fish or chicken and at work he seats for long hours at his desk working with computer.
What I do differently than him is I don't drink coffee, take small portions of meat and big portions of salad, fruits.... I walk more and move around more and take vitamins. I also took a full box of Culturelle which is a pro biotic to cancel off the medications I took due to my recent surgery. I have to say I hardly get discomfort lately.
When he refused to see the doctor, I made him Golden Yarrow herbal tea with honey, brewed cumin seed but no food for the first day (he didn't have appetite) then the next day he started eating some yogurt and fruit pudding but nothing more and the third day stayed on soup. He was so relieved after that he broke the strict diet and had regular food and was doing ok till again he had steak in a restaurant.
what I summon from all of this is:
1-Lack of exercise and seating is making his guts weak.
2- Eating outside almost all the time caused some bacteria to enter into his system and make him sick.
3- Dehydration might have been a helping factor since it is a new environment with outdoor heat and circulated air inside which causes more dehydration.
4- Eating red meat.( stays longer in intestine and gives a good bed for bad bacteria to grow)
5- Coffee (irritates the already weak and sensitive intestine walls)
6- Not eating enough fiber
7- One other thing is he drinks soft diet sodas!
So this weekend again, he is feeling ill and I started my remedies but I think he really has to take a strict diet and that he is started today.

I got cure finally after many years of suffering Al-Hamdellah, it was embarrassing that i can't got to business meeting or any family meetings high sound and continuous, i tried many thinks and visited famous doctor and nothing worked with me while some work temporarely,
finally one of my friend advised me to take (Ispaghol Husk) and i tried it, thanking Allah for that, it completely stopped, i did some search about that, it Ispaghol husk is 100% fiber so you put one or two full table spoon on half cup of water and drink it, it absorb the water and become like a jelly inside the stomach and colon and you will feel very satisfied you will not think about it any more.
as much i suffered from this, i decided to inform every body on internet about that to be happy again like me :)
