Wow. Doctors had to study years of medicine and they seem to lack knowledge of IBS gastro symptoms. 2 causes maybe the food supply or some mutated bacteria that isn't detected by microtechnology...I find it odd that the increase of IBS skyrocketed when the staple foods were genetically modified in the late 1980s early 1990s.

Any correlation of artificial sweeteners and genetically modified high fructose corn syrup aggravating irritable bowel symptoms?

Im so happy to actually know there are more people around with this problem that its actually comforting ,
im 18,and during quiet classes it is horrible have been having it since about year 7 and stopped for a few years and now its back, and there is nothing more embarassing than having this in the midle of a class, you try to mentalize yourself that you may hear the sound louder becuase its your body but than you think hey maybe if my hearing is up here and the sound is down there than maybe it is actually as loud as you think it is and than you realize your overanalizing,in a midle of a class having this and people thinking that you are farting and laughting histericaly like litle girs just makes me feel like c**p.
it hasent taken over my life but when it does happen which is not regularly it gives anxiety and social stress its just horrible but by reading this i have noticed that it actually happens most when i drink cofee in the morning like some said it may be the culprate.

Hi, I'm a senior in high school and the stomach noises have affected me greatly. It's come to the point where that's all I think about, and I can't focus on what the teacher is saying or work on classwork. I get anxious sitting close to people, which sucks because that's pretty much what you have to do in school all day. I can't take my tests in a classroom anymore, so I usually go out in the hallway or to the guidance office to take it. It really helps that my teachers know about it, but it hasn't improved my condition and I'm feeling quite depressed over it. I've taken anxiety medication which hasn't helped a lot, but acid reducers have helped a bit but I can still feel my stomach making popping noises and getting queasy whenever I start thinking about it. Also, my stomach feels bloated and gassy even when I haven't eaten anything. Is this happening to anyone too? I hate feeling like I have to go to the bathroom all the time. Anyway, my guidance counselor is helping me apply for a student accommodation plan so that I can take tests in a separate area. I'm so nervous about college because of this problem, and I hope I can figure something out before that time comes. Just appreciate the little things in life, don't let it get you down. You are definitely not alone in this, and I felt like I was until I came across this site. I'm so relieved that I'm not the only one with this issue, and I hope everyone can conquer this together.

I'm so glad i'm not the only one! I'm a 16 year old girl and i genuinely feel this is the worst thing that's ever happened to me :( I cant stand attending church (1 hour of silence???!!) but my mum makes me. I dread attending school after summer and even now, two weeks before i go back i have that anxious feeling in my stomach. My family don't really get it, my brothers constantly make fun of me and it's horrible. I get that the anxiety part is just in my head, but the noises!! I don't know what to do!! If you're like me and in high school here are some tips i have learned:
Tell your school guidance teacher! I told mine and she sent an email to my class teachers and now when i feel anxious and have to stop those noises, they let me leave! (I understand that you cant run away from it all of your life but for a little while, it helps!)
Eating healthy definitely helps!! Trust me! I try to go jogging with my friends, but it's hard as we're teenage girls and just want to eat c**p and watch movies. (That's another thing, I hate the cinema because of these stupid noises!) I'm currently pigging out with junk food as it's my summer but i made a deal with myself that tomorrow (Aug 1st) i'm going to eat healthy non stop until i go back to school! Hopefully it will help.
Also, my mum bought me anxiety pills and they also help with your mood! (I noticed i'm more upset, quiet and iscolated with my anxiety. I've become very unsociable and i do sometimes have thoughts of suicide running through my head. I wouldn't do it but sometime i feel if i cant sit in a class, how can i attend uni and do something with my life? will i even get a boyfriend because my anxiety is that bad? what's the point in living) I do recommend these pills as i took them for two weeks and felt slightly better about school!
Really what i can say, is take each day one step at a time. Take big breaths when you feel it coming on (into the pit of you're stomach, through your nose) I find that helps. Distract yourself if you feel it coming on, make conversation with the person beside you. I've taken tips from the posts on this board and my mum is going to buy me those Gas-X strips and all this pento peppermint stuff! I'm also going to try to cut out dairy and try that whole no meat two days before thing!
I don't know if this post helps, but i'm really happy to discover i'm not the only one like this! I hope things get better for you guys, and for me! I really don't know what else i'm going to do if the tips i'm taking dont work! Thanks for reading (it was sorta long) also i know it says dont put up personal stuff but if this works you can contact me and we can discuss things together!

I first experienced it at age 14 or 15 in a math class. It was not a big deal but in my mind it was horrendous. Thereafter, I broke out in cold sweats whenever some sort of gurgling or gaseous noise was about to come on. I'm 47 now, and it has inhibited me from accomplishing things because of a fear of it. I believe it is a combination of foods that don't agree with me but mostly it is mental. I have started EFT to reprogram my thinking. I am determined to beat this thing. It is ridiculous to hide out. I hear noises from other people and they don't freak out.

Hi guys I have read alot of these posts and stumbling across this forum has made me feel like i'm NOT alone!! My crazy stomach growling started in Year 9 or Grade 9 when I was in my one classes at Highschool. This is when and where I beleive my anxiety for sitting in quiet places around other people stemmed from. My whole highschool life FIVE WHOLE YEARS was pure torture. I dont know HOW I actually got through all of those years but I managed to do so without ANYONE noticing my problem. I think because most of the classes that were silent I just refused to attend.

this makes me really happy!! (not that other people are suffering too, but because im not alone!) im a high school senior girl, but my problem arose at the end of my sophmore year. junior year was complete HELL and i took up Independent Study for a while because i couldnt handle the anxiety (theres also a program called Home And Hospital, which is like an online high school so you take courses in the comfort of your home; i didnt go on because i would have had to drop my AP classes, but my friend is on it because he gets bad migraines in classrooms).
when i came back to school (which was incredibly stressful and terrifying) my mom made me talk to the school psychologist (although i REALY didnt want to) and he put me on a 504 Plan. i didnt tell him what i was afraid of, all i told him was that i get really stressed in a classroom, and especially during tests. with the 504 Plan, im able to walk out of the classroom anytime i want and for as long as i want (im even allowed to go to the nurses office and rest in the beds for as long as i need). also, i now take tests outside of the classroom (either right outside the door or in a separate empty classroom). my teachers are required to let me do these things because of my 504 Plan. although its a little embarressing to step outside all the time, its better than panicing during class and digging my fingernails into my skin to try to ignore the anxiety ;)
im worried about college next year, but the college im planning to go to also offers the 504 Plan (i think all schools are required to, but im not too sure) so im hoping for the best.
if anyone wants to talk, i would LOVE to!!

Hi, after reading some of the stories here, I realised how much this sounded like me once upon a time. It's been about a year and a half since I've learnt to manage my stomach noises, but it has completely changed my life around.
I had the strange rumbling, gurgling and squealing noises, along with a bloated stomach and lots of gas. I know anxiety was making my problem worse as I would have to sit in a quiet room for hours each day at work, but even when I was calm and not thinking about it, I would still have constant weird stomach noises, so I didn't think that treating the anxiety would help. I had to find a way to fix my stomach.
Let me tell you what worked for me:
1. I visited my doctor who did blood tests to verify I didn't have any disease causing stomach problems, such as celiac or crohn's disease. I didn't.
2. I was referred to see a specialist (gastroenterologist) who diagnosed me with IBS.
3. The gastroenterologist put me on a gluten-free, dairy-free and low sugar diet. I also had to cut out fried foods, coffee and reduce my alcohol intake.
It worked for me in about one week, and my body started to feel like normal and didn't make any unusual noises. It was like having my old stomach back. Now I have no problems sitting all day in a quiet room, and I don't even have to think about my stomach. I also rarely have gas and my stomach doesn't get bloated.
Along with these things I also drink at least two litres of water a day and exercise at least twice a week.
This might seem drastic to some people, but it has been completely worth it. I feel like a completely different person and highly recommend that everyone visit their doctor and a dietitian to help manage your diet. My recommendation would be, before starting on medications to hide your symptoms, I would try to get healthy and manage your diet and exercise first. It might work for you too!
