I just completed my first non-smoking day in more than 8 years (once I was hospitalized and couldn't smoke for 3 days). The bloating sure started fast with me!! I'd been smoking for about 28 years. I'm now 45, a married mother of one, in pretty good shape (walk 3 miles at least 5 times per week and lift weights) and am a fair eater (with a history of a longtime eating disorder). Having had an eating disorder in the past makes this bloating even more uncomfortable and distressing, but this time I don't want to fail and I'm not going to allow this feeling to take me down again. I just purchased Pachak Methi, which I found at an Indian grocery store. It is a fenugreek after-meal chew. Tastes pretty revolting, but it has ginger, fenugreek, coriander and cinnamon....all promote digestion. I'll let you know if it works!

Did you ever quit? It's been 8 days for me and I'm thinking of having one just to get some relief from the bloat.

Please let us know if it works or not! I've quit 3 times and started again each time because of my upset stomach. Became bloated instantly. Stomach hurt every time I ate. I'm also very active and eat very well. Would love to quit, but wish something could help with the bloat!

This is EXACTLY what happened to me! I quit for a week and gave in because of the bloat. Like you, within seconds my stomach was better. So dumb.

I thought about doing what your plan was. Only the ones I "need". I thought four total. Morning, after lunch, after supper, and before bed. It wasn't long until I started smoking more than four. I'm proud to say I maybe smoke 10 if that a day. Never the entire thing anymore either. Instead of a pack a day, but I wish someone would be able to help!

Well now that I see it is the quitting causing the bloating I feel a tad better? NOT. My problem is I smoked for 48 years (not 10 like you) I stopped 4 months ago.................at my age I really do not look forward to a few months of this uncomfortable, tight swollen stomach, I do not have too many fun things left in my life but I used to weigh 52 to 53 kgs.......... now within 2 months I have gained 10kgs, I am shocked unhappy and becoming depressed, it is uncomfortable and I am seriously considering smoking again.

Hi
I've noticed the same thing. I've become bloated and constantly burping.

Things that help: ginger raw, chews...thyme tea, pickle juice, apple cider vinegar, probiotics, natural enzymes, green peppermint tea, peppermint, black licorice or licorice root or licorice tea, exercise, stretching, yoga,

rubbing essential oils on your belly ( lavender, ylang ylang, rose hip) will help with pain and possible calm it

and of course meds like Zantac and Tums.

Green juices or smoothies with things like spinach, kale, green apple, cucumber, coconut water, berries, mango...

Drinking lemon water throughout the day will help hydrate
Drinking hot water with lemon first thing in the morning help jump start your metabolism for the day

I'm also a huge fan of acupuncture! It helps with everything, all the side effects of quitting . Some even have a series especially for quitting smoking.

Hope this helps! Stick with it. It will pass! (pun intended)!

Also, eating up to eight small meals a day helps. Eating every 2-3 hours with lots fiber from veggies and fruit, water and tea. Will help with stomach ache and bowel movements and staying hydrated.

Hi Guys

I'm on my 2nd day of not smoking and my stomach is so bloated. Didn't realise until I found this site that bloating is a common problem.

I shall definitely get to the health store to sort out the digestive system as I cannot stand the thought of putting on the weight and then my depression kicks in and I start smoking again. It's s vicious circle.

How long did your bloating last? I'm three weeks shy of not smoking and this bloating is brutal.

I am glad I found this forum because I am very frustrated and in pain. I asked this Dr. and he gave me a stupid answer…quit eating junk food…chesses don’t you see that I have a shopping cart full of organic produce and stuff…if he could only read my thoughts.
I stopped smoking a week ago and I am feeling miserable. It is like having an alien monster in me that wants to escape. It goes down when I work out, but as soon as I take a sip of water my belly gets huge again. I can see it and feel it growing in the morning while taking a shower. But I decided that I will not go back to smoking…I have never read that bloating can kill you….but smoking can.
