I was so glad to find this thread. I would love for the people that have finally gotten the weight off to repost please.

I have been on birth control for 7 years and I decided to stop in January. I had hoped to lose weight but instead I gained 12 pounds. I have recently lost 5 and I am anxiously waiting for the remaining 7 to fall off. For the past month, I have been on the insanity workout plan and I pray everyday for a woosh. Most of my weight is in my stomach and I feel so miserable. If anyone has any tips on how to get this weight off please help!

I am 24 and just stopped taking bc about 2 months ago. I also have noticed that i have gained weight/a layer of fat on my body. I am an athlete and work out 2x a day, 6x a week and cant seem to get rid of this weight. I also eat healthy. My body also appears a lot less toned. Has anyone noticed that this is a temporary side effect? I sure hope so.

i was on the pill for about 4 years when i finally stopped because i was spotting between periods (which i never did when i first started taking it) and i too gained about 10-15 lbs in like a month or 2 after stopping. i also was extremely emotional and almost depressed for like a month. i refuse to go back on it for the simple fact i dont wish to go thru that month phase again. i also joined an aerobics class and would run on a treadmill and havent been able to lose a pound. and i've been off for about 7 months now.

I'm sort of relieved to see all these posts (I'm not alone!), and then kind of discouraged (no success stories on LOSING the weight).. I'm 19 and I went off the pill this January (5 months ago) after being on it for 2-3 years. Initially I had weight loss, or at least I think I did (I was in college- no access to a scale). Anyway, my tummy was flatter.. for about 3 days. But then I became bigger.. and bigger. This was weird, because I was getting more exercise, and was eating better (salads, sandwiches, fruits, veggies, with almost zero junk food). When I came home and weighed myself in May, I was 7 pounds heavier! jeez! And, by the way, I'm 4'11 so this weight SHOWS. =( I'm having a hard time losing any weight, even though I'm eating well. This is so frustrating, because before going on the pill, I was always thin without having to do anything. I gained 15 pounds going on the pill, and now this additional weight going off of it. WHAT GIVES?!
Sorry, I'm just frustrated/sad/angry about all this weight gain.
I have GOT to lose 6 pounds! I'll do it for everyone who's frustrated with birth control! wait for me to post my success story! :-) I shall triumph! haha

I had been on birth control pills for about 8 years went off and gained 30 pounds in 6 months so I recently went back on and lost 5 pounds already so I'm thinking the pills was a cause in my weight gain

I was so relieved to find this post and know that I am not alone with this issue. I have been working out with my trainer for almost 3 years now and in that time I have lost weight, toned my body and became the most fit I have ever been. In January 2010 I went off the pill, as my husband and I are hoping to conceive. I am 30 years old, continue to be active 5 times a week (3 of my workouts still with my trainer) and eat very reasonably. I never thought that all of my work over the past few years would be completely abolished after coming off the pill - but I noticed my body changing right away. I too have noticed that where I was toned appears flabby now - especially my stomach and thighs. I barely fit in any of my clothes anymore and have gained 13 pounds. I have been working at losing the weight, but nothing is working. I am becoming more frustrated by the minute, and wish there was a success story posted here for hope on what/when we could expect our hormones to level out and our bodies drop the extra weight. Rest assured that if I figure this out - I will post another entry here. Wishing everyone above the best of luck - even though the medical experts say that weight gain is not associated with coming off the pill - there is evidence above that states otherwise. Maybe they don't want us to know that this would happen - as more women would reconsider ever taking it to begin with? All I know is that there should be more information on this side effect so we know that we are not alone with our symptoms.

I am experiencing the same problem a lot of posts here have stated about unexplained weight gain after stopping birth control. I have been on a low-dose form for nearly 20 years and went off two months ago to see if I could cycle properly and get pregnant. I have unexpectedly gained 8 lbs and seem to gain more with each step on the scale. I run 10 mi a week, and I'm a chef, so I'm on my feet all day, usually 12 hours a day. I also just got a brand-new puppy and walk him a mile or mile and a half three times a day, plus going up and down stairs from a third-floor walkup at least six times a day. I feel I live an active life and maintain healthy eating patterns since I always cook for myself and seasonally. I had always heard you lose weight after stopping birth control, but for me, it's been the opposite. I can't fit any more activity into my day, but I also can't fit into any of my clothes! This has been an extremely sad and stressful experience for me--someone who has always been able to maintain my weight and stay healthy. I just wanted people to know that this can be your experience, despite all the literature out there that says otherwise.

I am SO glad that I am not the only one who is having this problem! I went off the pill about one and a half months ago after being on it for the past 11 yrs and I have steadily gained weight since. I eat well, nothing else has changed - but my pants don't fit :'(
I joined a gym today, hope that will help. We are trying to conceive so going back on the pill is not an option. I've had bloodwork done and thyroid test and everything checked out fine. so frustrating

Ugh! I am not alone! Exact same thing is happening to me. I went off about 6 weeks ago and have gained about 6 lb, too! And I am working out regularly, no change to eating habits. Is there anybody who has found a solution??

I am 24 yrs old and I stopped taking birth control 2 months ago when my husband and I decided that we wanted to start trying for children. I was on the pill for 5 years. Whe I started the pill, experienced dramatic weightloss. Now that I have stopped taking it, I have gained over 25 lbs in 2 months and I keep gaining weight! My diet has not changed (it has gotten better b/c of wanting to shed pounds) and I exercise regularly.

Any advise??? Please help!

I started the pill when I was 12 for accutane and have been on it ever since as it helped with my skin after accutane. I am now 26. My doctor has been telling me for years to get off it. But I don't want to get pregnant. I have developed hoshimoto's and also had my gallblatter removed (due to yas and yasmin). I have been on all sorts of different brands of the pill over the last 15ish years and I have never felt "bad" on the pill.

I decided to get off the pill in August because my I am dealing with some autoimmune issues. My whole life my weight has been very healthy. Even if I didn't work out, I have always been slender. It's now almost November and since August I've gain almost 15 pounds. I have cut my diet and work out 3-4 days a week. I read online that lots of people gain weight after stopping the pill partly due to water retention and partly due to hormone imbalance. Hence why when you go back on the pill you lose the weight. I see my doctor this week and I hope she has some sort of supplement or something that will help me.

I've also developed hair on the tops of my hands (luckily my hair is blond) and my moods have been crazy emotional. I feel miserable. I look pregnant. Being over my normal weight is so uncomfortable and I wish I knew what I could do to get the weight off. No one talks about the long term affects of birth control because we (20-35yr olds) are the case study. I'm not sure if getting off to have my body try and self regulate is better or if I should just go back on so I can be thinner and happier even if it could hold me back health wise.

When are men getting the pill!!!

I went off of Yaz (Generic Yasmin... I believe) two months ago and have also started gaining weight. It really surprised me when i jumped from 114 to 121 almost overnight! The extra weight really makes me feel horrible! Pants not fitting really sucks! I went off of the birth control because I was tired of being on it and thought it would be nice to drop down to my normal weight of 105. Yikes! Look what happened. I refuse to go back on birth control, especially if it is the only way I will lose this weight. If that is the case then that stuff did something bad.
I am relieved to know I am not the only one but I want this weight to be gone!
I eat healthy and work out regularly. This is BS....

I took a very high dose estrogen pill from 1973-1975. I never had any weight gain while on the pill. But, as soon as I went off I gained 15 lbs overnight it seemed. I was in my mid 20's then and am now in my mid 60's and have never gotten my hormones straightened out!! I take a high dose thyroid med, and still no weight lost. My weight has gone continuously upward--from 128lb to a high of 234, it is awful!! I have loss umpteen pounds throguh the years only to gain them back and more besides. I KNOW the pills did something to my hormones that has never been corrected!! Stange that doctors do not listen when women tell them this.

I can't believe what I have read here. I stopped the pill in early August this year, it is now November and I have put on 5lb. For me, this is unheard of, my weight has remined constant for the last ten years. Like others here, I exercise regularly to a high level and I eat pretty healthily. Until I read this I put it down to my age (33) and recent holiday over eating etc. But I commented on how scary it was this weight gain had just crept up on me. Now I know why! So I feel a bit depressed about it as I am already exercising hard but I look like I never do - I am flabby and have put on loads around my stomach.

I feel compelled to go on a diet and step up the exercise to crazy levels as I can;t bear it. But sounds like i is not having an effect for most people :-(

I too would be interested to hear from people who may have regained normal weight after their body adjusted.

I'm 40 yrs old, and have been on the pill for about 2.5 years. I went on it shortly after a divorce. At that time, I lost weight quickly (people were concerned!) but attributed it to the stress of the divorce. I recently gained about 12 pounds, and the only thing that I have changed is I went off the pill about six weeks ago. The weight came on very quickly, and the only thing I can think of is that it's because of the pill. So I'm going back on it, I'm tired of my jeans not fitting! Weight has never really been an issue for me. I'm relieved to see that other women have experienced the same thing, now I know I'm not crazy! But I think I will go in for a thyroid test, just be sure.
