Last week I walked for about 1-1/2 hours and when I returned home, I had to take my socks and tennis shoes off because my feet started itching real bad! The itching started on my feet then the palms of my hands--there were no bumps, welts, or anything so it felt like the itch came from deep within the skin. I went to the doctor because the itching got worse during the night and he gave me Zyrtec which helped but causes drowsiness. I hadn't eaten anything different except had some ice cream-- raspberry swirl at Brewster's, but ate raspberries before so it couldn't be this. Blood tests showed that the kidney and thyroid were normal, and if there was any infection - all ok. Except have high blood pressure (put on diuretic and high cholesteral (put on Lipitor) and bad heartburn (put on Prevacid) Didn't start taking anything yet until I can find out about the itching that came on suddenly. I never heard of this before but from all the posts, it looks like a lot of people suffer this condition.

Whenever you see a red circle surrounded by a white circle, you must be tested for lyme disease. The spirokeets have a 21 day life cycle and they spread throughout your bloodstream and thus the rash may progress. It doen't sound exactly typical but all cases of lyme are different. It is treatable but the longer it goes untreated, the worse off you will be. You must be tested by a doctor familiar with lyme who will use the right laboratory and know how to interpret the results. The labwork does not come back with a yes or no, but rather a series of values that require specific knowledge. The other thing is for all of you had and feet sufferers, I know my cousin has had the exact same thing. She controls it with daily zyrtec-claritin did not help her. As soon as she stops the zyrtec, the ith comes back.
Best of luck!

I too have severe itching on the bottom of my feet and the palms of my hands. I have suffered with this for 3 years now and it all started right after a particularly stressful time in my life. The doctor put me on Hydroxyzine 3 times per day and it controls the itching. Usually I can just take 1 every night before bed and I am ok. If I miss even one day though, the scratching begins!!! It was so bad one time, I scratched the bottom of my feet with a hairbrush just to get relief!
Ask your doc for hydroxyzine. It works!!

A circle rash indicates lyme disease, especially if you know you were bitten by ticks at that site. However if you have a spreading rash that is circular and moves as you say, it is probably ringworm. (Not a real worm, but a fungus that will easily spread. You can get ringworm from people or animals....it glows under a black light and is easily treated.
If you have itchy feet with bumps...my guess is contact dermatitis. I am allergic to my living room carpet which was handmade in Afghanistan from camel hair and using vegetable dyes.
Burning itchy feet (no rash) can also mean dehydration, so be sure you drink lots of water. It can also mean vitamin deficiency (B-12) or the first signs of a neuological problem.
Good Luck!
If you think I'm a doctor, then you aren't one either!!

I have itchy skin. I take Allegra on a daily basis. I have been under a great deal of stress lately with mother in the hospital.
I have nerve bumps on my skin at times but not with this burning itch that seems to be mostly on my hands and feet.
It was last night that I took Clortrimiton and Benedryl and my feet and hands were still red, burning, and itchy enough to make a person crazy (I wanted to rip my skin off).
After trying cream, Monistat cream for itching, I thought about the possibility that this could be fungal related and used Tinactin Powder on my hands and feet - AHHHH, relief, was able to sleep last night.
Woke up this am with less itch than last night. Took more Clortrimiton and OTC Benedryl (80mg).
My allergies are bad. I sometimes have to take Allegra 180mg, and another antihistimine like Clarinex. Claritin doesn't work for me.
Stress brings out these 'nerve bumps' I call them as they are bumps that show up when I am stressed out or nervous due to so many extenuating circumstances in my life.
My mother recently was diagnosed with C. Diff, a bacteria that over grows in the intestines when you are on a lot of antibiotics. It can cause diarreah, stomach cramps, bad smelling defication, nausea, vomiting, etc... So I am on Flagl which kills it. I thought it might be a good idea to get the drug that kills it as I could have it from being around her.
C. Diff can cause a persons body to become septic if left untreated. But, my itching red burning started a few days before all of this. So, who knows, the bacteria C. Diff could have started all this this time -- I have never had the burning, itching and redness like this before ever!!! Usually only occasional nerve bumps and them they go away.
Maybe you should see an MD and get a stool sample tested for C. Diff bacteria. But make sure the test includes the toxin assay or it will not be conclusive???

Ok....like all of you I have itchy hands and feet. This happens at night, around 6 pm and it is on my feet or in between my fingers and the only thing that helps is if I literally use the shower head with hot water to burn my feet and then I apply Lotrimen or Gold Bond foot powder and here's the kicker....you have to put socks on or use an electric blanket. It seems that the cold air triggers my symptoms. Along with the rest of you, I am extremely frusterated and the posts I've been reading are disheartening. Of course, I went to the doctor and because they cannot see any fungus or rash, they chaulked it up to be "stress". HA! I have been stressed WAY more than I am now and this has not happened. If somebody out there knows of a cure please let us know. I don't want to go the rest of my life with this issue.

OMG! I too have been itching my feet and hands for the last 6mnths, I have psoryisis in my scalp aswell so when I don't treat that it makes my itching worse, today i have had a full body itch and it's driving me mad - take an Antihistimine and that stops the itching so it must be an allergic reaction to something, I am having an allergy test in 2 weeks I will let you all know the outcome x

For the past year now I've gotten these itch attacks. Suddenly pinpoint red spots appear on my hands and chest and they itch very badly. This lasts for about a minute or so. I've been trying to find the cause of this, yet haven't had any luck so far. I think it happens when my blood pleasure rises for a bit but I'm not exactly sure that that's the case. Any ideas?

Hey Guys,
I thought I would tell my story about the painful experience I’ve had in the past 24 hours.
It started at 1pm last night 2/6/08 I woke up scratching my palms so strongly that it was alarming. I fell back to sleep only to wake up again with the pain of 1000 misquotes biting my hands. The itching pain was absolutely unbelievable. It was 3pm and I walked down stairs to wash my hands and scrub them with a brush. I was fishing wire through a wall the day before and I thought the dry wall dust was the problem.
I went back to sleep only to wake a third, fourth, and fifth time. The following morning I was a bit scared and I did not know what to think. Then I caught a glimpse of my two year old son. He had bright red cheeks and the backs of his arms were covered with a red rash. I took a look at my back and sure enough I too had the same thing.
What was it that we both came in contact with.? My wife and my older boy were fine. What was it that we both ate?
BINGO!
The answer was ice cream. Yep ice cream. It was Coffee Almond Fudge from Starbucks.
If you get red fat itchy hand thing once in a while and you eat this stuff STOP EATING IT ASAP.
Here’s a list of my symptoms.
1) No foot pain
2) red rash on the hips, back, arms, knee area, neck, cheeks
3) the rash is itchy (like bug bites)
4) The hands are red with rash and tight as if stung by a bee
5) The itching on the hands and palms is really bad and will wake you at night
6) The paint lasts a while over 24 hours
7) The skin will feel warm on the second day
Consider cold water with ice for you hands during he day. Aspirin also takes the edge off. Don’t let this thing get you down. It will run its course and you will be fine.

Hi,
This is for everyone that has posted about itchy hands and feet. I suffer this almost every day and every night. I have a liver disease called Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC). The main symptoms of this disease are itching (mainly hands and feet but can itch everywhere), fatigue, liver pain, chest pain, dry eyes and mouth. If you have any of these symptoms I would suggest getting blood tests done to check your liver functions. Mine was way above normal before diagnosis. I do not want to worry anyone but it is always best to get checked. What most people don't realise is that itching can be a symptom of liver disease.
Best wishes to all
Vanessa

Wow, it certainly is debilitating. This is what I found out.....it happens only at night and this is the remedy.
1) taking a anti-histimine helps
2) topical ointment
3) rubbing fragrance free lotion on my hands and feets to hydrate them and put socks on.
4) BIGGEST TIP - this is a hard one to do. You have to relax and try and think of something else after you do the things above. No scratching, no rubbing, concentrate on NOT focusing on the itch. Within 10-15 minutes it will ease up.
My thoughts are this...1) it could be nerve damage of some sort, maybe from past drug use, stimulates maybe - ANY COMMENTS on this. 2) It could be a "tick" or brain malfunction. 3) It could be viral, although I have been to numerous doctors and they know nothing about it, their response is...if I can't see anything, it's not there and it may be "stress" related. That is always the way out of a proper diagnosis. 4) It may be a certain toxin in our body, something we may injest that causes this condition. And finally, to rule out #4 I am going to try these feet pads that were seen on tv that pull toxins out of your system thru your feet. Will keep info coming if any change

I have the same problem and it seems to be related to my exposure to chemicals. I dyed my son's hair and the next day - voila! Itching hands/feet and swelling. I also tried everything to get rid of it - essential oil blends, natural remedies....finally broke down and tried all the OTC medications! NOTHING WORKED!!! Finally, I remembered that itching is a "hot" disease. So I just put ice packs on my hands and feet and the itching went away almost immediately - now I do that every time the problem comes. It is so nice to have a solution to the itching!
Hope this helps.

I used to have the bumps along the edges of my first, middle and third fingers, which itched like crazy!
When I went to a GP, she told me that they were caused by a fungus, not unlike what causes athlete's foot and the anti-fungal cream that she gave me cleared it right up. From what she told me it was contagious, since my fiance developed the same thing and still has it a little bit.

i can't put up with this anymore. i am a pharmacy assistant and i have had itchy hands and feet for the last three months. At first it started on my left foot under my ankle in the form of about 12 little tiny blisters, which were so itchy. eventually from constant scratching it spread to cover my whole side of my foot and back of my heel. it then appeared on my right heel and all over my hands, up in between my fingers and on the top of my hand.
i have seen 5 doctors and all they have said is take phenergan and use advantan ointment(script only). i have had enough of this. i take the phenergan at night and have increased it to 50mg and i still wake up about 3 times with itchy hands and feet. it drives me made. i have used cold towels, pinetarsol gels, non-soap washes, all sorts of creams, natural vitamins(EPO) and antihistamines. NOTHING IS WORKING. i dread going to bed and by the end of the week i am utterly exhausted. if anyone has had anything work for them please help.....
