Hello all~

Week four, and doing better.  Still some pain and seepage, but getting better... good days, bad days. I go to work for a few hours every now and then, but that is about all I can take on the doughnut.

The one comment I have is that if you are substituting your prescription pain killers for over the counter stuff, and thinking this will give you the same pain relief, you are wrong.  Use the prescription stuff if you can, take care of the side effects as necessary, and let yourself recover with the least amount of pain.

It's years later but, how have you healed? I have the same problem, but my Dr didn't even show up for my post op so I don't know how bad I am.

Hi All, I have been backreading and was following aussie's and brezze's stories. I sincerely hope that both of them are better now since it has been months since they posted.

Anyways, I'm a 35 y/o male from the Philippines and I had my mixed (internal and external) hems removed last 08/30/2012 and I just want to share my experience.

I had hems since I was 20 and decided to have it removed since its very painful and bleeds and had to take sick days off when it flares up. From what I gathered from the previous posts, the surgery here in the Phillippines is treated differently, although its still classified as a minor surgery.

What the hospitals here (at least the better ones) is that they require the patients to be confined for at least 1 day before and 1 day after surgery. Below is the daily activity when I was confined for surgery:

Day 1 Wed: Admission around 4PM and was in my room by 430PM. The first day or night is already in preparation for the surgery, several doctors came in the room explaining the anestheshia, the procedure itself. Then I was given a high fiber diet as well as stool softeners and had to start fasting by 12MN. I didn't sleep well this night because of nervousness. I slept maybe around 230AM.

Day 2 Thu: Was awaken by the nurse on duty by 530AM and had to undergo "fleet enema" (not sure of the spelling) to induce BM, it was effective since minutes after the enema, I had my BM pre surgery. I was sent to the OR 600AM and had the actual surgery by 845AM to 950AM, 65 minutes total since the hem was actually more severe than what was previously dignosed. THe procedure was painless and woke up several during the operation without feeling anything from the waist down (anesthesia was saddle block method), the songs during my operation was LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem and Sexy and I know it :O! then I fell asleep again. Woke up in the recovery room still with my waist below numb, as soon as I can feel and move my legs I was sent to my room around 11AM. Movement in my legs returned around 5PM, another sleepless night not much because of pain but more on discomfort.

Day 3 Fri: Woke up around 600AM, still without pain since I had been given pain killers thru the IV and some antibiotics. Then time once more for an enema, minutes later I had my first BM post operation...:-@ boy this one REALLY hurt considering my BM1 was mostly liquid and some gause from the surgery. After dinner I was given another dose of stool softener and I had to do BM2 immediatelt...:-@ hurts like hell again but went away in about an hour. Had a decent sleep that night, not much pain but stll very uncomfortable. Started also oral pain reliever and antibiotic.

Day 4 Sat: Sent home by 11AM with pain but manageable. No BM that day and better sleep that night.

Day 5 Sun: Woke up around 430AM with stomach rumbling BM3 was again painful and took longer to go away. I took a pain reliever an felt better but I was experiencing bleeding, more that I experinced from the first two days, I needed to wear adult diapers, bleeding went away around midday.   Pain was managable with occasional pangs of high pain.

Day 6 Mon: BM4 was less painful and no bleeding, still uncomfortable though because of the swelling.

Day 7 Tue: BM5 again less painfl and no bleeding, saw my surgeon today for a follow up check up, said wound is healing ok, he had to dilate my anal canal (using his 2 fingers? don't know, I did not look)...again painful.

That's it so far, I'm on my fifth day after surgery and have been managing the pain well so far, I stopped taking the pain killer Sunday (day 3 post surgery). I'm really glad I had this surgery and it seems that it will get better day after day as some of you guys mentioned in the previoud posts.

Commenting for my husband (whose still in bed, in pain, and on pain meds on day 8).  He has not eaten in four days (afraid of the pain) - started bleeding profusely this morning - almost called 911 - until fecal material starting shooting out of his rectum with blood clots (similar to projectile vomiting) - while in a prone position.  Never saw anything like it (and I've had and raised three children and had several surgeries myself).  Shame on all doctors for not explaining the possible after-effects of this surgery.  So far, we've managed to ruin 20 towels and one very expensive memory-foam mattress....can't imagine what's next - but I'm thinking it can't be good -   Devoted wife of 45 years (but that could end soon!).

Hi there,

I have found this blog list after my surgery.

I have enjoyed reading your stories very much and feel I have to post mine here as well.

I paid no attention to how it would be post surgery, and am really happy now that I didn't. My surgery was ok ... ended up staying in hospotol overnight and voided my first two times in hospitol the day and night of the surgery ... liquid came out both times. Almost like diarrhea ... I thought that was it ... I was on my way ... oh boy !

I didn't poo for 2 days after returning home ... during those two days I started felling really good, felt I was over the hard part ... I see that this is a common experience (some others have reported similar feelings) ... by the third day post surgery I hadn't pooed for 2.5 days ... the discharge notes said "don't allow yourself to not poo for more then 2 days" ... none the less, I felt good and well ... so well that I stopped taking my pain medication.

The day I first passed a proper stool I went for a long walk - which is probably why I pooed - and I got home ... went to the toilet and decided I was going to poo ... perhaps because I was off the medication, I could feel that I was going to poo if I gave it a little time and a small bit of pressure ... sure enough, a solid log came out ... o.m.g. the pain was absolutely unbeareable ... rich and thick was the smell... I couldn't stay squatting and had to stand breathing heavily and pulling my hair, rything in the pain ... I was in so much pain I couldn't tell if it was over or not ... next came one long thin t**d ... clearly the way it is meant to be from the start ... still couldn't tell whether it was over or not - but didn't care ! I was in so much pain ... one quick wipe and I had to run to the kitchen to find the pain killers ... took one and jumped in the shower .... the pain killers weren't going to kick in for at least 20 minutes ... o.m.g.

Made the saltz bath and lay in it ... I needed to pee but couldn't - the pain was so terrifyingly bad that my physical ability to pee was shut down ! Unbelievable.

About 1.5 hours later after cleaning myself up and getting dressed, I started to calm down ... but I felt like I lost a few years of my life in that short incident.

Today I have been on the medication and have had 2 poos ... both were nothing like the first, and far better, although still painfull.

I also get shooting/stabbing pains whenever my bum sphincter tightens ... which when I ween myself off the medication (which I do once per day) I feel very strongly.

My first mistake was that I didn't start taking the fibre and stool softeners till I got home the day after surgery ... I have been on a liquid diet till today ... I ate a salad today and it was great ... however I will stay liquid for a few more days ... all I can say is that even if you are in hospitol, take the fibre and stool softeners ... that way, you shouldn't have the problem I did. I also recommend walking for at least 30 mins per day from the second day onwards ... this will help you get your first poo on.

My second mistake was that I didn't realise that I was in the eye of the storm ... I thought strangely enough that 2 days after surgery I was starting to feel a lot better ... I didn't realise that I would poo at some point and should be on medication to stop the pain ... consequently I had my first poo with NO medication in my system ... what was I thinking ?

You know ... I looked at the bottom of my discharge notice from hospitol, there is a suicide help line contact information ... I think I understand why now :)

Keep the stories flowing ... it is about the only form of comic support I am getting at the moment ...

Its been 5 days since my surgery and my ass still hurts like hell! The burning is indescribable. When I had my 1st BM the day after my op - OMG! the pain was excrutiating and then something popped out and is still out. Doc says its some of the tissue - not sure I believe him. Do you have salt water sitz? WORRIED!

Hey Everyone, I'm 30 year old male from Sydney, Australia. I got the roids removed because they were messing with my bowel movements but they weren’t painful..

Hemorrhoidectomy is now 13 day post op.

I have seen a few of these posts so I’ll just copy what I wrote on the others forums because I went to many.

I have to say that if it wasn’t for finding these posts I most surely would have died of pain. I need to thank everyone who posted their experiences, tips, resolutions and nightmares.

I guess I’ll give my experiences because reading other peoples storys was enlightening.

This is something that I definitely did not expect in regards to pain. I’m pretty sure that if governments use Hemorrhoidectomy as a form of torture to get information from spies or something then I’m pretty sure any agent including James Bond would have sold his soul to make the pain stop.

I mean it was bloody ridicules, what the hell is up with the specialists, nurses and doctors not giving you the appropriate information to be prepared for such ordeal?

After coming back from hospital the great anaesthetic that they give is still in action at-least until the next morning, After that it’s a rolla costa.

First 3 days were horrible horrible pain, 4 showers a day with 4 baths just to make the pain go away for a few minutes. Blood after every BM, more throbbing and the reflexes OMG what’s up with those. You half way urinating and then BANG you lock up stopping everything and then pain from that reflect.

4th day was deceiving I thought I was getting better and I stopped the pain killers, BIG MISTAKE!

Day 5,6,7 were still just as bad if not worse especially after passing BM, I mean I couldn’t sleep properly or I wait wake up every hour to go toilet or wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and have a bath because the pain was too much.

One of the most frustrating things is that you don’t know if you’re getting better or making it worse or you’re not healing? You think you’re getting better then you have a BM and rips something open again, how was I meant to heal?

Day 8,9 were still bad. There was this feeling especially after BM with the throbbing and constant pain, not being able to release gas properly. There was this feeling that little bubbles were coming out of my anus without my consent, it was weird had no idea. I just felt like ripping my A-Hole out.

By 10 I decided that if I was getting better the next day I would go GP and if still nothing I would go hospital but thank God by Day 11 I was feeling half normal. I gave it two more days until I knew for sure that this was a FOR SURE thing.

In saying that I am now much better, I don’t feel like passing out when going to bathroom and the 5 hour throbbing after BM is gone.

The things that helped me get through this are.

Endone Pain Killers 1 every 6 hours.

Nurofen (Anti Inflammatory) 2 every 6 hours

Panadole (attacks the pain the brain) 2 every 6 hours

MAKE SURE YOU STOOL SOFTNER not the laxative ones unless you need it the one I used was Coloxyl 50

Important to get Anti-Biotics

Xylocain 2% (lignocaine) was what I used first but wasn’t too affective

Then jumped to Xyloproct Oinments 15% (lignocaine) highly recommend

A-lot of Salt bath A-LOT! Epsom salt if possible otherwise regular but not highly recommended.

So there is light in the end of the tunnel, obviously everyone is different but for me it took about 12 days to feel like a normal human being. I would say after 10 if you’re still bad go to the damn hospital because there is something wrong.

HANG IN THERE GUYS!!! There is life after this. Good luck everyone....

you are a very lucky person and anyone saying this op is not too bad is not understanding that some people have worst experiences than others. Me, I had my op 5 weeks ago and am still in agony during and after my BMs. I had two haemorrhages during the first two weeks due to a surgery induced ulcer and was admitted via ambulance plus 4 blood transfusions. Considering I never had pain before my op only severe bleeding which was the reason I had it - If I had known then what would have been the repercussions of having this type of op I would have continued to put up with the bleeding. I have had in the past a double heart bypass and a hysterectomy. Neither of these came close to the painful experience I am having now. Please think twice anyone reading this before the op and take more than one persons advice.

Thank you to everyone who has posted.  I would love to know how ocean breeze and auzzieK have made out.

It is now Nov. 25 and I had my surgery Nov. 2, 2012.  The bowel movements are getting a little easier and I wanted to offer this as a way to clean the area.  I take the bag that came with my sitz bath, fill it with warm water, and use the hose to clean the anus area.  Works so good and I haven't seen that anyone has tried this.   I am a female, age 56, and was wondering if anyone has experienced a feeling like their bladder is falling out.  The past two days I have felt very heavy "down" there.  Can anyone shed any light on this.  I truly hope it's a 6 week recuperation period.  I was told it was a 7-10 day recuperation and then at my 10 day check up was told it's 7-10 days of the most agonizing pain and then it can be a few more weeks until you feel better.  Just wonder how long I'm going to use my "bidet" before I can comfortable wipe the area after a BM.  Wish I had investigated the post-op of this surgery before I had it because I don't think I would have went through with it.

Hi sorebutt,

This is AussieK. I finally healed, but it took me 9 weeks until I was painfree. I ended up having to use nitroglycerin ointment in the area, as I wasn't healing due to the muscle going into spasm down there. Effectively, it was an anal fissure, but it did finally heal, and now I am almost 7 months post-op, and continue to be asymptomatic. I feel for you, as the recovery from this op is just terrible. I am also female, and 54 years old, but otherwise very healthy and active. Ocean Breeze and I still keep in touch, and she is still not completely recovered, as she developed an anal fissure. Her op was about 10 days after mine. I never had the sensation of my bladder falling out, so can't advise you on this. But I agree that if I'd known how painful the recovery was going to be, I never would have had that operation. Hang in there, it eventually gets better even though it is a slow and painful experience.

Hi AussieK Thanks so much for getting back to me. So glad to hear that there will be light at the end of the tunnel, but it is going to take time....much more time than I thought it was going to take. Please tell Ocean Breeze that I hope she heals soon. I read her entire blog and my heart goes out to her. I hope we both never have a recurrence of these hemi's. I know I won't be having anymore surgery. Stay well.

Hi just want to say I am glad you are okay now, it gives me faith in the future, I am also 56 year old female and my experience as stated earlier has been just horrible. Yesterday was 5 weeks, I seemed to be coping better with thepain during and post bms but today I seem to be having a bad day. The problem really is I feel I go to often and yes, I also feel as if my bladder is not where it should be. I also find that I am having tummy aches like period pains but that cant be possible as I had a hysterectomy some years ago. Having read so many posts I now dont feel so alone and that all my problems have been experienced by someone. Having been told that it should only be 15 days recovery and I am now at 5 weeks I was getting a little worried. I am still not able to go to the doctor as moving about is still causing me to feel I need to go to the toilet. The only reprieve is to lay on my side. Does this get better in time?

Hi Big Mama, I’m so sorry to hear that after 5 weeks you’re still not feeling well. Have you gone back to the doctor at all for a follow up? I have gone back two times and tomorrow will be my third follow up. Each time I am told that it’s healing, but I’d still like to know when having a BM will be a natural part of my day. I have gone back to work part-time, but don’t go in until my morning “business” is done. I hate that I have to continually worry about a BM. I still take a colace at breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a tablespoon of Metamucil every day. Are you taking anything? And what’s up with our bladders? I’m going to ask that question tomorrow. Could our insides be swollen? It's very uncomfortable when I walk. Will let you know how I make out. I would advise that if you haven’t gone to the doctor, maybe you have to get there to make sure everything is looking OK. Let’s hope that tomorrow is a better day.
