Hi Daniell! Your scar is practically invisible now! I had a total thyroidectomy six years ago. My scar is still slightly visible, but I don't mind it. I even like my scar, somehow I find it elegant...weird, I know. Looking at your scar I remembered how mine looked back then, I had thirteen stitches. At first it looked like a bloody sausage, but after a while it started to look like a smile, so now I have two smiles to remind me how lucky I am. Now I'm taking 125 mg of levothyroxine natrium, what's your supplement therapy? I wish you all the best.

I am a 16 years old girl and i have had my thyroid removed as the doctor have said the scar will lighten to a little red line about 2 years. However, I got mine out may 5, 2008 and now it is already 2 years and my scar is still very visible and i really have a hard time looking at myself or wearing something that does not have a turtleneck.....

what do you mean you have a hard time looking at yourself, be thankful your doctor caught it in time and you're okay.. I had to have a total thyroidectomy because it was growing causing trouble w/ breathing and wrapping around my windpipe ..... i thank god I'm fine now and dont care if my scar is visible or not .. There are far more important things to worry about and a scar is not one of them.....

Good for you.I couldn't care less about the scar. It's just good to be in good health

Wow, you're not exactly sympathetic to this young woman. Sweetie, I hope you are now doing better with the scar!

I am the same way. I love turtlenecks because a person looks at you in your eyes not your neck. I don't want to be looked at on my neck. Trying to find where I can buy some cute choker necklaces but having a hard time with that even :( email me and let me know what you are doing now?

I totally understand your concern, especially given your age. I am a 50 year old female and had a thyroidectomy 1 year ago and just 4 days ago had the incision reopened to remove an adenoma from parathyroid gland. Even at my age I was so anxious about the scar. I looked at it several times a day, hoping each time the keloids I thought were forming was just a figment of my imagination. I Applied heat, used Maderma, vitamin E oil, cocoa butter you name it, and all to no avail. It got to. Point that everything seemed to make it worse. I'll tell you, after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, having gone through treatment to cure it and then finding additional tumors which the doctors had to do a lot of testing to determine whether or not malignant, the residue of a scar doesn't seem to have much importance. I trust I am healthy and anxiously await good news from my surgeon. This time around, the scar is much bigger, however I've decided not to worry about it. I realize 2 yrs sounds like a long time, but time heals all wounds. You'll look back in a couple years and wonder what all the worry was about. Until then, wear it proudly. It just means you've won the war.

I had a total thyroidectomy about 2 months ago and my scar tightens up and feels like it is stretching. It is very uncomfortable and painful. I wear low neck shirts/blouses and no necklaces due to the issue. Is this normal?

I am 49 and just had total thyroidectomy due to cancer being found. I now have to have radio iodine therapy. Luckily for me my scar is quite neat and I thank my surgeon for that. 5 months and two operations later my scar is improving, most people don't notice it but I am still conscious of it. It itches a little at times and I wondered what cream to use. To the young ladies, yes be grateful that it's not as bad as it could've been but I understand how you feel. I had marks and scars in younger years and it's horrible how it makes you feel. Get advice from GP's or other people in same position, I'm sure there is something out there that can help you feel better about yourself but do try to think about the beauty inside hun. I'm older and wiser now, if people don't like me for me then stuff them x

my surgeon had me use bacitracin 3 times daily for a few weeks, and from the beginning did not want it covered. then he said to use vitamin e. i had a bottle of capsules, so i was cutting them with a scissors and spreading on the wound, 3 times daily. soon, i just bit the top and used it , then swallowed the leftover capsule... cant hurt, right? or spread any leftover on my lips or nails... my scar is looking pretty good for only a month. [and i get keloid scarring, but because there isnt a lot fat there, its not bad. ] i would say try to eat right, rest, and get out and walk for at least 30 minutes a day...give your body some help! ive read a lot of people are experiencing a feeling of tightness, too. ive got that. its worst if im slouched on the couch. if i sit up straight it pretty much goes away. good luck!!! 2 of my friends have had this too, and now we are "the scar sisters"

Were you 16 when you had your thyroidectomy? If not, try to remember 16 is harder for some than others and give her a break. Just because a scar is not important to you, it does not mean everyone feels the same about their bodies, especially at 16.
