what do you mean you have a hard time looking at yourself, be thankful your doctor caught it in time and you're okay.. I had to have a total thyroidectomy because it was growing causing trouble w/ breathing and wrapping around my windpipe ..... i thank god I'm fine now and dont care if my scar is visible or not .. There are far more important things to worry about and a scar is not one of them.....I am a 16 years old girl and i have had my thyroid removed as the doctor have said the scar will lighten to a little red line about 2 years. However, I got mine out may 5, 2008 and now it is already 2 years and my scar is still very visible and i really have a hard time looking at myself or wearing something that does not have a turtleneck.....
Good for you.I couldn't care less about the scar. It's just good to be in good health

I totally understand your concern, especially given your age. I am a 50 year old female and had a thyroidectomy 1 year ago and just 4 days ago had the incision reopened to remove an adenoma from parathyroid gland. Even at my age I was so anxious about the scar. I looked at it several times a day, hoping each time the keloids I thought were forming was just a figment of my imagination. I Applied heat, used Maderma, vitamin E oil, cocoa butter you name it, and all to no avail. It got to. Point that everything seemed to make it worse. I'll tell you, after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, having gone through treatment to cure it and then finding additional tumors which the doctors had to do a lot of testing to determine whether or not malignant, the residue of a scar doesn't seem to have much importance. I trust I am healthy and anxiously await good news from my surgeon. This time around, the scar is much bigger, however I've decided not to worry about it. I realize 2 yrs sounds like a long time, but time heals all wounds. You'll look back in a couple years and wonder what all the worry was about. Until then, wear it proudly. It just means you've won the war.

I had a total thyroidectomy about 2 months ago and my scar tightens up and feels like it is stretching. It is very uncomfortable and painful. I wear low neck shirts/blouses and no necklaces due to the issue. Is this normal?

I am 49 and just had total thyroidectomy due to cancer being found. I now have to have radio iodine therapy. Luckily for me my scar is quite neat and I thank my surgeon for that. 5 months and two operations later my scar is improving, most people don't notice it but I am still conscious of it. It itches a little at times and I wondered what cream to use. To the young ladies, yes be grateful that it's not as bad as it could've been but I understand how you feel. I had marks and scars in younger years and it's horrible how it makes you feel. Get advice from GP's or other people in same position, I'm sure there is something out there that can help you feel better about yourself but do try to think about the beauty inside hun. I'm older and wiser now, if people don't like me for me then stuff them x
