My two year old daughter vomited one night. Vomit came out through her nose too. A couple of days later very foul smelling mucous came out of her right nostril. I kept an eye on it hoping it would clear up. 1 week later we took her to the doctor, he said wait a week to see if it clears by itself. I said I think food is stuck in her nose from vomiting. He said it's unlikely as food dissolves. We went back to another doctor who assured me there was no sign of infection and again it's unlikely it's food. Nothing improved and we went back. He gave us antibiotic ointment to put up her nostrils. Not easy to do! We did that for a few weeks and saw no improvement. We went back and she was swabbed and it was a bacterial infection, and we got given a course of antibiotics. Terrible stuff to get your toddler to take! It didn't work. We referred privately for an ENT specialist consultation. He said he could look up her nose on the NHS. He said it's unlikely to be food stuck there. They put her under general anaesthetic, looked with a camera and pulled out large remains of an olive deep in her nose. The specialist said it was unusual. No more smell or mucous and she's very happy again.
