I'm 17 years old, and I got my tonsils out 9 days ago. At first I thought oh, this is nothing, on my way home from getting my tonsils out I told my mom and dad I wanted a cheeseburger, so they took me to mcdonalds and I got one, it did hurt, but not terribly, I didn't end up eating the entire cheeseburger, and for the first 3 days all I really ate was mashed potatoes, because I didn't want to take the chance of hurting my throat, on day 4, I woke up and took my medicine, and a couple minutes later I was going to lay down to go to sleep, and I coughed, a very small cough and it felt really wet, so I went to swallow, and coughed again, and my hand was filled with blood.
my mom noticed right away, and she really started to panic, I was leaning over the kitchen sink and there was blood running out of my mouth, my mom got the papers that I received from the hospital, and when she called the number on the papers it said that the phone was no longer in service, so she looked it up in the phonebook only to find the same number, by the time she finally found the right number, I was very hot and sweaty like I was going to pass out, but I didn't tell my mom this because I didn't want her to panic more (stupid Idea now that I think about it.) the blood coming out of my mouth was VERY thick, and clots of it were sticking to my tongue, when my mom was on the phone with the hospital they told me to swish ice water, and very shortly after that it stopped bleeding, and I don't know if it was because of the ice water or if it was just done bleeding.. I ended up losing at least 2 cups of blood, but, strangely, it didn't hurt bad. for the past 4 days, I have been VERY hungry, I've eaten cheeseburgers, pizza, bacon, without a whole lot of pain, as long as i chewed a lot. and now today, my throat really hurts, I haven't eaten anything yet today.. and I don't know what could be causing it..

also, about 3 days ago, before I went to sleep I noticed that my tongue was GREEN, and it kind of looked like something was growing on my tongue, it's disgusting, and it hurt. I brushed my tongue very well that night, it came off a little, but not much, the next day it was more of a yellow color, I brushed my teeth like 7 times, brushing my tongue as well as I could each time, and it even started to bleed a little, but it won't come off, it's still there now, and my tongue feels very raw (and it did even before I started brushing it a million times a day) ..anyone else experiencing this?

Im Deena. Im 21 and had my tonsils out 6 days ago. Im still having trouble swallowing. I now have begun to notice that I feel sores in the back top part of my throat near the roof of my mouth on either side. It hurts when anything touches it.

The day of my surgery the drs make me eat ice chips before I left. I def had some pain when I woke up but they soon took care of it. They put me on hydrocodone [liquid] and liquid amoxicillin. The first day after I got home, I basically slept most of the day. I didnt really eat much. I had a popsicle.

The second and third days were two of the worst. I was miserable. I had a few popsicles each day, a couple pudding packs.
Fourth and fifth days I was moving around a bit more but still not getting much down. By day 6 [today] I've lost 13 pounds.

Evening of day 5 I finally managed to get a warm bowl of ramen down. Today I got down a couple develed eggs and a spoonful of potato salad.

Some helpful hints:

Drink a lot of fluids. I almost had to go to the dr cause my urine was brown.
Ice packs! They help.
Dont sleep over or forget to take your pain meds at the right time. I took mine every 4 hours. IN 15 min they kicked in.
Eat about 30 min - 2 hours after taking meds. this is where my pain was the least.
Sleep in short intervals. otherwise your throat dries and makes it harder to wake up.

it bothers me when people treat this like its no big deal. Adult tonsillectomies are far worse than child tonsillectomies

Alright, day 5 and I still am not doing so good. I'm 17 and befor my surgery I had tonsillitis 6 times in 2 months. The doc decided they needed to go. When he started cutting them out they ruptured! I didn't know tonsils could do that. Now my throat is sore but my tongue hurts even worse. I am kind of upset he didn't tell me my tongue would be in terrible pain from tonsil surgery. The back of my throat looks and feels like a war zone. And I do in fact have canker sores in my mouth. This really sucks. Any tips to make me feel better?

I'm on day 9 of recovery. Although I wound up spending the whole day yesterday in the hospital again due to gushing blood and only to discover I had a blood clot and may need to have it cauterized again (thankfully the bleeding stopped and I was discharged after almost 8hrs) I feel the surgery was worth it. At the beginning I didn't think it was worth it at all due I the pain but 1) ill never deal with tonsil stones or tonsillitis again 2) I realized I have a better time breathing 3) I found out I'm allergic to codeine (good because I know for the future now). I'm 19 years old and getting closer to the end of my recovery I am glad I went through with the surgery

I'm on day 5 and I'm surprisingly getting better faster than I thought, I had a sloppy joe the day after my surgery haha don't ask me how but for me day 2 & 3 were the worse for me. I had an abscess in my throat that had to be removed before my tonsils so the pain have dealing with an abscess for a month is nothing compared to the recovery pain. They gave me Lortab for the pain but the medicine made me feel very detached and weird so I stopped taking it. Popsicles are what got me through so far. Find the best tasting Popsicles u like and just eat those I've been eating 4-6popsicles a day. I also heard that slurpees from 7 11 work good too. I will say it's very frustrating when I see something very appetizing but cannot eat it in fear that it will cut open my wounds. Also doctor says day 5 & 6 will be swollen the most which I have found true, swollen the most but not the most painful. Just watched a movie today called Restrepo very good movie I highly recommend it it's a war documentary. Good luck to all those who are or going to have a tonsillectomy it's not as bad as you think God Bless

I'm 51 and on day 7 after my tonsillectomy and don't think I have ever experienced so much discomfort in my life.  After days 1, 2 and 3, I was doing relatively okay.  I even made an appointment with my ENT to see if he would release me back to work on Friday.  Was I kidding myself. Yes my throat hurt a great deal and my tongue was swollen but I didn't feel terrible just tired.  Day 4 rolled around and things turned for the worse. I had a great deal of pain in the inside of my ears in addition to the throat pain and still swollen tongue.  I was scheduled to see my doctor on day 6 but was too sick to my stomach to leave my home. Today I'm forcing myself to drink fluids to keep myself from dehydrating. In addition to everything else I now have sores on my still swollen tongue.  I'm hoping that in the next couple of days I start to feel a whole lot better.

Prior to my surgery I had read horror stories of what adults have experienced after a tonsillectomy.  My feelings were that they were over exaggerated and that the problems described were islolated incidences.  I never thought any of the problems posted would apply to me.  Yeah, I know, was I ever arrogant.  To tell you a little about myself I can tolerate a great deal of pain and normally not a whiner.  Knowing that I will never need to go through this again is the only thing that's keeping me going right now.

My advice to others, be prepared for the worse after a tonsillectomy. I hope that recovery is easier for you for you then it has been for me.

I'm on day 6 of a tonsillectomy, adenoidlectomy and uvula removal. Boy those my throat hurt, I still can't eat anything solid. My pain feels like its getting worse. I've tried applesauce, Popsicles and ice cream and non help the least. I've been taking ensure/nutraments just to have something in my system because I don't want the pain of throwing up. I'm 28 and this is by far the worst pain imaginable. Tomorrow I have to follow up with my ENT and I can still barely open my mouth. I've been taking 12 Percocets a day. Even they, as strong, do not help at times.

thanks for those writing about canker sores - I'm on Day 5 and realized I have I sore on the underside of my tongue on one side, and THAT is what's causing the pain there - I thought maybe I'd been allowed to bite my own tongue at some point during surgery or something! Glad to hear it's somewhat "normal".

Anyway, also for the record, I'm already feeling so much better - I'd encourage everyone not too be too scared of this surgery. Most blogs seem to contain the horror stories and not the cases like mine ("Eh. Things are fine.")

Esp with humidifiers and popsicles and just trusting your instincts about what feels right to eat, the recovery is going just fine in my opinion. I DID start out with a tonsillar abscess and endured a barbaric procedure to drain it (which I swear I would rather birth another baby without meds than endure that ever again!) So maybe it's compared to that that all of the tonsillectomy stuff seems very mild... Man-made holes are nothing like natural ones. That's for sure. But still.... you can count me as one case where it has felt better than the previous symptoms. Without question.

Good luck to everyone out there dealing with this stuff. Hugs!

I had my tonsils out the 12th of May, I have to so I was extremely scared prior to this because I was reading so many forums about tonsillectomy recovery! I'm glad to say that for me, recovery has not been as bad as most people in the threads! It should be noted that I am 25 and have suffered from chronic tonsillitis my entire life, my GP was always hesitant to allow me to have my tonsils out because apparently it is one of the worst surgeries to recover from as an adult. He was wrong! The worst bit about my tonsillectomy recovery was the allergic reaction I had to my pain medication - Tramadol and Oxycodone. As soon as it hit my stomach I was vomiting for hours. That has been the most painful part of this entire process. A quick switch up of my meds fixed that problem :) I guess what I am trying to say - everyone is different! Do not freak out about the surgery, even if the pain is excruciating it will fade and you will never have tonsillitis again (woo!). And remember to sip sip sip that water all day and all night!

Hi, my name is Mike.  I am on day #7 of recovering from my tonsilectimy.  I am 28 years old, and my ENT suggested I get them out as they have been causing me all sorts of problems.  I was VERY nervous to have the surgery as there are so many horror stories out there.  I have had anything but an easy time during recovery.  The first day was a breeze.  I was still really out of it from the surgery when I went home, I did outpatient.  I could talk the first night, and popsicles and jell-o went down with ease.  I was on the liquid hydrocodone 7.5 with 325 acetometophine.  I couldn't sleep very well while taking that medicine.  I asked to have it changed, and they put me on percocet.  1 pill every 6 hours.  Let me tell you now, that is NOT enough.  I was miserable the next 2 days.  Ended up getting a fever of 101 then it went up to 102.5.  I called the Dr. back and they said take a luke warm bath and take 400-600 mg of motrin.  I did.  It dropped the fever to 100.  I had this fever for 4 days straight of 100+.  on the 5th day I ended up back in the ER because I then had a sharp pain in my right lung and coudln't take deep breaths at all.  I was diagnosed with pnuemonia.  They had to give me a shot of steroids, a breathing treatment, put me on antibiotics, and they doubled my percocet intake to 2 pills every 6 hours and 800 mg of motrin every 6 hours as well, alternating with the pain meds so every 3 hours i had something in me working.  After the visit to the ER the fever went away, and I felt much better in that regard.  Now i'm experienceing the raw tongue.  It is very white, and seems like my taste buds are just "gone." I can't hardly taste any food and it is just VERY raw.  My scabs are feeling like bits and pieces are starting to break off, and I keep spitting out parts of them I think.  I can sleep better now, but the pain is really bad when you wake up, as you are usually past due from the meds.  Swallowing the pills has been a breeze for me, and doesn't hurt much though.  Lucky for me I still have 7 more days off from work, as I took a full 2 weeks just to make sure I wasn't going back too soon.  Hope this helps, but really there isn't a way to make this procedure easy for an adult.  It just flat out sucks, and you just have to deal with it.  The pain meds help take the edge off but you won't be pain free, at least not in the first 7 days that I experienced.  Getting the right dosage of meds is key though. Find what works for you, and don't hesitate to speak up if you feel they aren't working!  Cheers

Possibly the white tongue people are experiencing is oral thrush due to antibiotic use? And also her in the uk we take 1000mg of paracetamol "acetim" something, in the states you call it with 60mg of codiene, and I also had Naproxen a strong anti inflammatory. Maybe in the USA you are under medicated? ? Im 7 days post op at 31, and we get told to eat normal foods straight away. Am not going to lie it hurt like a mo fo, but with drugs Id say it wasnt too bad. Oh and I had a chest infection on day 2 got amoxicillan asap off of gp or lord knows what would have developed. Got to love our NHS

Hey guys. I'm a 17 year old girl and am currently on day 9 of my recovery period. Suffering from severe sleep apnea, getting my tonsils and adenoids removed was the only logical idea. Apparently it was even more beneficial than expected however as I had tonsil stones and many other problems, unbeknownst to me. Still, I was definitely not mentally prepared to step into this surgery. The first few days were not terrible; I was not so much succumbed to pain as I was to tiredness from the medications. I had (falsely) read somewhere that days 3-4 were the worst, so when day 5 rolled around and my pain only mounted to about a 5 or 6 on a 1-10 scale, I thought I was homeward bound. Unfortunately, I was extremely misguided in that assumption. Days 6-9 have been the worst. While each has had its seconds of complete relief, the feeling is quickly eliminated as I swallow. The pain has gotten so bad that unconsciously, I have lost almost all interest in eating. I don't recall the last time I've been genuinely hungry since getting the surgery, and that says something when all I've eaten today was half of a milshake (which I attempted to finish at two separate times today) and a regular bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy just now. This is comparable to what I've been able to take in for a while. My biggest tip would have to be to not try to rush back into everyday life. When I go back to school this upcoming Monday, I will have officially missed 9 days of school. That is something that has me extremely worried as I will be missing the end of the marking period and the last two week's worth of homework and tests in my final grades. Still, I know enough to not go back in earlier than it's been said I should. Even talking somewhat normally during the day has already resulted in me straining my throat, and the pain that resulted from that was not worth anything. Please, give yourselves the proper amount of time and wait to go back until you feel well enough. There's no need to chance further damage to be in school or at work for one extra day. As mentioned in an earlier comment, I also have pains in my gums and the roof of my mouth. Sometimes, they are more extreme than the throat pain itself. I have been assured however that these are only a result of swelling and will naturally go away, as they will for others who are worried about this. Hopefully the pain curbs soon enough for me and all of you guys. Best of luck. -LR
