Its been 4 months since my tonsillectomy. For the first month it was pure hell. They say everyone is different. I must have been the odd one out because I was told to drink plenty of cold fluids suck on ice, and eat soft cold foods. I tried that. It felt like someone was stabbing me in the throat every time. Warm things like soup and coffee was my only saving grace. When I drank it came through my nose every time for 3 weeks. I couldn't swallow my pills for that reason so I had to crush them every time I needed one or two. I couldn't talk for the first week. If I whispered it hurt. Never in my life have I experienced pain like that and I've had a baby. Prob wouldn't go through it again either if I had to. But after that month I was fine. My uvula is small now as well which is weird for me. I still talk funny sometimes with it. But I had no bleeding, no sores, no complications from surgery or anything like that. My advise is get plenty of rest, warm food and drinks are amazing. Ice packs were the bomb, apple sauce for the pills helped, don't eat or drink anything red for at least 3 weeks after surgery just in case you do bleed. And that's pretty much all u can do.

(Over a year ago) lol yeah I'm experiencing this. I'm summer, on day 9 I'm 18 and my pain! Is horrid. Haven't bled at all in the recovery but last night the pain was the worst through the whole recovery. I've been coughing a lot which is super painful!!! Idk when this will end...worst pain I've ever felt. Green tongue indeed like what the hell????

How did you get your doctor or your health insurance to cover removing tonsils? I have been trying to get mine removed for YEARS but my doctor keeps saying that canker sores are not a legit reason to remove tonsils :(

Seriously this tonsillectomy has been literal hell.... This is my story maybe it will help some and warn others to be cautious after surgery! I was an in and out patient (this meaning I came in in the morning and left around 3 in the afternoon) I wasn't in much pain day 1-3 but the 3rd day came and it was just the worst of the whole experience (or so I thought) then around day 5 things started to get better. It wasn't entail day 7 literally one whole week later, scabs falling off, throat healing pretty well (or so I thought) when things got out of hand. I was feeling a lot better so I tried harder foods (AKA a soft dumpling) That was my big mistake... A few hours later I felt a warm sensation going down my throat, I checked in the mirror and there was massive bleeding. Yeah ill admit I started to freak out and cough a lot of it up. That's when my dad rushed me to the ER. The doctor told me to stop hacking up the blood because a blood clot was trying to form. I don't know if you know how hard it is to obtain the ability to just keep blood down. Blood clots and it started to clot in my throat making it almost impossible to breath, so I hacked that up to. It wasn't entail I had to water (ICE COLD) that the bleeding began to stop and the last of the hacking of blood was done. The hospital didn't do much but calmed me down, gave me fluids and morphine, and watched me through the night. However, my doctor explained to me that I was anemic, which was very serious. If I hadn't ended up in the hospital and continued to panic and spit up blood, things would have gotten a whole lot worse. Its now day 8 and I feel a whole lot better being home from the hospital. I had horrible stomach aches and black stool (presumably from the blood that was swallowed) Now i'm suffering through the same problem with the back/roof of my mouth burning every time I try and eat something. Best thing i'm doing is drinking water every time I swallow a bite of food and keeping away from acidic foods. Strawberries, apples, limes, and lemon flavored things are the worst. I'm also going to try and scrub my tongue gently because i'm thinking the bacteria is causing some sort of reaction.

MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE: to people just getting out of a tonsillectomy surgery...
I can't stress enough. DONT and I mean DONT eat anything solid entail those scabs are completely gone and you see a completely healthy throat even if that takes 2 weeks! That is when the biggest risk for bleeding begins is the 5-9 day when scabs begin falling off... I wish my doctor told me this. Honestly I was so starving at that point for real food I just wanted to eat it. But seriously just stay with liquid foods for at least 1 and 1/2 weeks. That means food with soup, ice cream, applesauce, and yogurt consistency... and get plenty of rest just stay in bed and don't move, it sucks but honestly it helps. Nothing I have gone through has been more painful than the second round at the hospital, throwing up blood to the point you think your dying.

Is it worth it... TBH during the whole thing I didn't think so, but I hear many stories of people who don't get sick as often and completely eliminate sore throats after surgery. To bad I had to be one of the 2, 3 or 4% that had this bleeding incident. I really hope I never feel a sore throat again...
As well as, I really hope others take my advice and good luck. I don't mean to scare anyone but as long as you try your hardest to prevent bleeding its almost a piece of cake.

I'm 20 and just had my tonsils removed. After reading all of the stuff online I was very scared to get them out but the recovery was not even half as bad as people described. So much easier than expected. Really not that much pain, especially if you take the drugs as prescribed.

DO IT! I initially read all these blogs and posts and almost cancelled because I was so scared of the healing process. For those who have chronic tonsillitis and strep, this surgery is not much worse. Although people do handle pain at different levels, the pain was not too terrible. Stay on top of your medicine and drink like crazy! My husband was wonderful and would wake me up every two hours to take a drink so that my throat wouldn't dry out. Get a humidifier for the nights to stay moist too. It sucks, but it is worth it and like I said, not much worse than strep.

I'm currently on Day 8 and I too had the scare of my life. I woke up after a nap on day 7 feeling like I was chocking, soon to realize that what I was trying to swallow or spit was a stream of blood. My mom calls the paramedics but I end up at urgent care. Just to hear that it is okay. It happens. A scab just fell off. And to watch if it happens again. Honestly, I hit the panic button and just cried. I couldn't stop the flow and didn't want to start the process from day 1. I gotta say, it's been difficult, I'm starving but I don't want to risk any more bleeds. So it takes me 45 minutes to an hour just to eat a small portion of mashed potatos or soup. I just wait for the day when I can enjoy a pizza and anything else I desire.

Hello... i am 38 yr old female who had a tonsilectomy 10 days ago. This is my story so far... following repeated tonsillitis since my late 20s i finally took up the offer from my GP to see ENT once there i was told they need to come out and quick! Eeeekkkk! 2 weeks later i was in surgery! I was under for around 35 mins had an anti sickness before going under which i would highly recommend cant imagine being sick on open throat wounds! Woke up pain scale was 5 raising to 6 when swollowing. Had the 30/500 and dicloflex 50 mg and pain was a steady 3 released form hospital 4 hours later pain level stayed the same for the first 7 days. I stayed in bed, ate the toast and crisps as advised am the only person who i know who has put weight on following this surgery! I honestly could have gone to work on day 5 felt really good although on strong painkillers. Roll on day 8 and boom pain in ears started... strong painkilllers had run out so was on over the counter meds and they didn't touch it. Pain scale now a 7. No bleeding or infection just pure nerve pain! SOS to GP for prescription of the forementioned meds and its back to being manageable i am able to function. So far 2 weeks off work with a 3rd week sick note waiting to be collected. This is mainly due to my job in a call centre environment so alot of talking and close contact with people who are regularly sick! All in all its not been bad experience no worse than a bad bout of tonsillitis just without the infection and high temp! My advise get the drugs ive mentioned keep in top of them ,dont run out, brush teeth alot and gargle the mouth/throat with mouth wash after you eat. Do eat alot and drink aleast 2 lts of water a day and you can get through it. Dont be put off with the online horror stories for those of us who are stuck with chronic tonsillitis this really is a walk in the park! Looking forward to life without a sore throat starting soon.

I have had the deviated septum surgery along with the regular sinus surgery for a very bad sinus infection and then this past Monday had my tonsillectomy, I won’t lie, I am in pain but the deviated septum and not being able to breathe for a week with those stints in my nose was so much worse than my sore throat I am having. I’m just looking forward to the outcome after I am all healed. No more strep or tonsillitis. Have the surgery if your dr suggests it. I love my ent, I have all trust in him. Good Luck!
