Do not use a vaporizer for your son. Instead use a cool mist humidifier. Keep the humidifier close to his bed at night and also keep it on during the day in whatever room he will be in. It will help to not dry his throat. Without a humidifier his throat will get dry and he will have a dry sore throat. I am 38 years old and had my tonsils removed 6 days ago. My vaporizer is on all the time. Make sure it's cleaned once a week according to directions. You can also get him a neck ice pack that you fill with ice. Its placed on the neck and throat to decrease the swelling and pain. It's a cloth material and it does not leak. I bought mine at CVS but any pharmacy sells it. You may want to call his doctor and see if he can be prescribed lollipops that numb the throat. I'm not sure if they are prescribed for his age but it's worth asking. His doctor can also prescribe a steroid to decrease the swelling if it worsens or becomes severe. Good luck.

Omg seriously I hate how I feel. I had a tonsillectomy at 42 years old 7 days ago and I'm in the worst pain ever. I had to beg my Dr to give me a better pain pill. I was given Tylenol 3 and it didn't even come close to helping at all. After complaining like a baby and even having my mom call, he finally gave me Norco 500. I can still feel the burning mouth, tongue, back of the throat, ears everything you name it. When does this get better? I thought I was doing good and then wham back to square one again. Going to Dr tomorrow for a check up because I'm getting anxiety from the excruciating pain. Good luck to you all. I really hope this was all worth it.

Hi my name is Cassie, the 26th of January I gotten My tonsils taken out. I feel like a regret doing it because how much of pain I have to go through. It's going to be going on 6 days ago that I had My surgery. The frist time of having surgery it was hard to really swallow because how burning the and sore the throat felt, My pain was a scale of 10 and it is still a 10 cause I have really bad pain in My throat. It's hard to eat and drink, every time I talk I feel like something is holding My throat together that I talk a little different. I been spitting a lot of spit out I mean a lot. The only thing that is killing Me is the pain I have in My throat the burning and sores that I feel. The control medicine that I am on doesn't help anything it only makes you feel good but it doesn't take the bad pain away. The other thing I hate is the white stuff that is the back of My throat and back of My tongue. The ENT doctor should come up with something special for adult surgery because the feeling after surgery you have to put up with a lot of c**p of horrible bad pain you feel. I hope I don't get worse at all this really sucks. =(

I am now on day 10 and my scabs are thankfully almost gone by the looks of it, although my throat still gets irritated really fast when I eat so I do a bunch of tiny meals throughout the day. Probably miss feeling full more than anything but college taught me how to live hungry. Anyone that can chew somewhat well I recommend plain pastas and rice (keep you full longer, or as close as you can get to it). I have been eating all the other things (soup, bananas-which for some reason hurt me so I stopped doing that, beans-good for protein, applesauce, marshmallows, pudding, jello, eggs, malt o meal, ice cream - although I found out dairy is bad as it can leave a coating on your scabs so eat/drink after dairy to clean it out a bit if you're determined to have some). If you can chew but are still really struggling with foods try eating gummy vitamins every day so that your body can at least get a little boost. A lot of generic ones can taste pretty gross so fair warning if you go for that. Maybe I should've tested liquid vitamins, but usually those taste gross too - I just wonder if it would burn going down.

Other than that I can't help much. I experienced the burning really bad one night and the last two I have spent more time asleep during it than awake. (Tylenol PM is my favorite thing, always knocks me out and makes me feel super relaxed but the pills are big so they can be hard to swallow. Still worth the effort)

As hard as the burning is to get through it's only tough while it's happening (cried every time) so for me I'm going to say the first week was way worse because my pain was way more constant and I kept getting super dizzy or nauseous when I took anything for the pain (because I couldn't eat like at all. I went two days without anything but water, ice packs, and tears). All I can say is try to find someone or a few people (so they can take turns) who will be super nice to you and patient taking care of you. I used a mini whiteboard and marker or my phone when I needed to communicate.

I think that's about everything. I'm not planning on checking this post so if you reply you won't get an answer from me (maybe someone else though). Good luck out there and stay strong!!!
