Thank you so much for your insight! I'm on day 11 and the burning has become unbearable. I went back to the doc yesterday morning after waking up in tears on day 10 and he gave me a shot of steroids. It helped for the rest of the day! I still had some burning but not nearly as bad. I woke up again this AM with the same terrible pain. He, thankfully, prescribed me a 5 day steroid regimen. I'm hoping this will work because I'm completely immune to pain meds. I only had a regular tonsillectomy but this is definitely the worst surgery I've ever had to recover from and I've had 9! I have been drinking ice cold water this whole time because the really cold stuff seemed to be the only thing that would reduce my swelling and coat my throat but now it's burning just like all foods. I'll go get some G2.

Thanks again and hoping for releif soon!!

Thank you for this explanation. Doctors should be held responsible for not explaining the recovery process properly. I had my tonsillectomy on Wednesday 26th April. On Saturday 29th I woke up and my throats was severely bleeding. I went to the ED where I was admitted and began to vomit blood and clots. I was due to be discharged Sunday but was experiencing the feeling of nausea every time I ate anything. They gave me morphine for the pain and anti nausea meds. They kept me in one more night and discharged me with a script for panadiene forte and antibiotics, knowing well that I was constantly feeling nauseous.
Today is my second day home and I've vomited 3 times, twice yesterday and once today. I called the hospital yesterday and they advised to get anti nausea pills, however stopped the forte and started taking the original meds I was discharged with for my tonsillectomy.
I can't eat, barely sleep, in constant pain. Certain foods burn the sh*t out of my throat. I feel like complete c**p! If I had known recovery would be like this I would have said no to tonsil removal!

Everyone's asking the same questions if that's the case it's most likely normal for sure I'm having the same prob I'm also on day 8 and I just have a really bad stinging pain on my left side in the back of my throat it's know where near my tonsil area it's Everytime I drink water or anything also when I eat but my recovery seems like it's been going pretty fast way faster than my brothers but you guys have antibiotics and stuff like that not me they just gave me liquid hydrocodone that went out in two days or so didn't even last me a week bc the pain was the worst when it first happened but now I can bare the pain I been eating normal sometimes but last night got a blood clot if any of you get a blood clot where your tonsils used to be it's normal but once it busts you will have blood in your throat that you will be spitting up for a few min it's normal I kept freaking out but it's fine and whoever said room temp drinks the Dr told me cold fluids mostly that's all you need to drink

I know this is an old thread but it is the one I found when I had similar issues. I thought I was going to die. I couldnt eat I went to the hospital twice for dehydration. I called my doctor who told me they couldn't prescribce me any pain meds which was fine but she said well we will try a steroid to maybe get the swelling down, that could be the issue. After I took my first does I could immediately drink and I could actually eat. I dont know if it was a placebo effect or what but it has been an amazing day. Hope this helps someone.

I noticed swallowing that weird sticky Syliva helped coat my throat. I am now on day 8 post operation. I feel so much better today. I'm only taking my pain meds every 7 hours during the day and 4 hours at night. I just woke UP this morning am so drank three full glasses of water and it was so nice.. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.'

I am 8 days into my recovery and I am in the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. This has been such a mentally draining and painful journey. I am 22 years old and been BEGGING my doctors since before I was 18 to have my tonsils removed and finally they decided to do something about it. I'm really regretting the decision I made to have this done. I have a 3 day festival coming up and I'm afraid I'll have to sell my tickets because I won't be able to actually enjoy the festivities. EVERYTHING burns when I swallow even my saliva. I thought I was seeing improvement on the 5th and 6th day but this is really breaking my spirit. This is having such negative effects on my mental health. I really wish I never had this done..

After reading everyones comments about their surgeries I feel a sense of relief that I am not going through this pain alone. This whole experience has been mentally and physically exhausting. No one understands the pain your in unless they themselves have gone through it, (and not as a child!). I am on day 10 now of my recovery and the burning sensation began a few days ago. The terrible pain in my ears has hopefully finally stopped and now Im just dealing with this awful burning stabbing pain inside the back of my throat. Feels like a hot shard of glass is poking my throat every time I swallow. This whole process has been torture. Hang in there everybody!

Today's day 7 of recovering from my tonsillectomy. I'm a 15 yr old teenage girl, and they prescribed me Hydrocodone but I ran out about two days ago.

The first few days were exceptionally difficult seeing as I couldn't so much as swallow water without a load of difficulty and pain medications. I was basically on a jello and popsicle diet. I hardly eat the way it is, I've always struggled with that, so it doesn't exactly bother me as much as it may some. After about day 5, I noticed how green looking my tongue was. The scabish flesh eventually fell off after about a day, but it's left behind a huge patch in the middle of my tongue, where it is completely raw, and the taste buds are gone. After making it this far and finally being able to swallow mashed potatoes and hold them down, I no longer can because of the burning sensation I experience with anything other then popsicles. The pain is horrible. How long will this last before I can eat something without feeling like there is a hot lighter pressed into my tongue?

This sharp pain, is it in your ears as well? Because it's in mine, and my tongue is raw, and burning. I honestly regret this whole process, but on the bright side after recovery I won't have to deal with the pesky tonsillitis

I have to say this has really come in handy. I’m 24 and on day 6. I was crushing my oxy prescription and by this day I couldn’t do anymore! The burning sensation was horrible. Fortunately I tried swallowing the pills and it worked (Now I feel like I was unknowingly torturing myself). I didn’t realize how serious dehydration could be, but another fortunate is a doctor I know came by with an IV so thank god for him. If you know anyone who can do that for your do that or go to the hospital to get an iv. If you need something in your body to take the medicine and everything is stinging, try marshmallows. They naturally ease sore throats and it’s helped me a lot. Good luck everyone

I'm having the same problem everyone else is. The right side of my tongue is very scratchy and feels like it's rubbing on the stitches/scab. Hurts to eat and I'm got mine last Thursday so post day 7. I was able to eat full Christmas dinner fine the pain was manageable with my meds but the scratching isn't. I really hope it goes away in less than the 3-4 weeks everyone else said. It's hard to just move my tongue to swollo spit. Anything help anyone? I'm going to try the chicken broth mentioned tomorrow.
