Please can you people tell me how to train effectively for a 800metres race?

The best type of training for an 800m is interval training. Where you do sprint or high intensity bouts with rest in between.
The 800m is a pretty high intensity race so doing intervals get the body used to dealing with sustained sprints. Start with doin 400m splits with 2-3 minute rests inbetween.
Slowly increase the distance leading up to the race but do not do a full 800 until the day.
