Japan is thinking about halting all beef imports from USA because of the suspicion that there has been a shipment that contained material at high risk of mad cow disease.
Mad Cow Disease is a progressive, degenerative, fatal disease that affects the central nervous system of cattle. A similar disease called Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease is found in people and it is thought that one of its variants is caused by eating contaminated beef products from cattle affected by mad cow disease.
Japan’s Prime and agricultural ministers have agreed that all imports should be stopped until further notice. This has happened just after the imports had been resumed.
Both parties are anxiously expecting the results of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
USA authorities have expressed their regret about this unpleasant event and have said that they would do their best in order to avoid repetition of such mistakes.
However, the damage has already been done. US will have to put extra measures from now on to secure the safety of the beef and regain Japanese trust.
