My digestive problems started after trying the Atkins (protein) diet. This led to chronic acid reflux, which I managed to control by cutting out acidic fruit juices, black coffee - and eating a sweet apple every day. Strange cure - but it worked.
6 months later and the discharge problem began... I've tried the Garlic / Cranberry approach - and it didn't work at all for me. The raw garlic nearly made me sick a couple of times and everyone around me complained of the garlic smell.
Reading an earlier post - I tried taking a fibredrink, and adding fibre to my diet - again with little result - however after further research it seems that the type of fibre makes a big difference. So I started taking Psyllium Husk capsules (bought in the UK from Holland & Barrett) - and it really has helped. The stated dose is 2 capsules with water 3 times a day - but I've found that just 2 in the morning pretty much solves the problem.
I still have the occasional problem - and the capsules are certainly not getting to the root cause, but they have given me much more control.
Hope that this helps!

If anyone is still on this thread... I wonder whether Garlic pills will work as well as garlic? Does anyone know? I am concerned that eating 2 cloves a day would cause problems at work. I'm using Cranberry pills, align, metamucil wafers but things could still be better. Time to cut back on the caffeine/choc. the hardes to do.

I didn’t realize so many of you were in my situation. Unfortunately I have no miracle remedy, only a comment and a "thank you".
I’m a healthy 60-year old female and I too have had the same problem for the past two years: clear, yellowish, fishy smelling discharge a few minutes after bowel movements. In my case, the harder the stools, the more important the leakage seems to be. This is very annoying, to say the least, as I can never stray too far from washrooms wherever I go.
The problem appeared one day out of the blue. Since then I’ve seen various doctors, went through numerous tests, including a colonoscopy, and at last I was referred to a specialist who would have tested my sphincter muscle. However, I didn’t bother to see him as I’m quite sure I don’t have such a problem: no amount of muscle movement can make one retain clear liquid inside their colon. The leakage seems to happen whenever I pass gas (apparently we all pass gas several times a day even if we don’t notice it).
The doctors I've seen were all puzzled, as this type of problem doesn’t seem to be listed in any of their manuals. I am so very grateful to the gentleman (or is it a lady?) who said Metamucil did the trick for him. I too wish I had known this earlier and I’ll certainly report back after giving it a try.
Thank you so much for the post.
P.S. It’s this post that prompted me to register.

Hi
Thanks for everyone contributing, I am back after couple of months.
Problem still the same. Garlic and Cranberry juice helps , but are no remedy.
I have went back to see my doctor, he asked me to do three tests. One an Xray for the colon, one to test the anal muscles, and third one is pretty interesting. They inject some Barium and porridge in the anus and make you site at the Xray machine and ask you to discharge while taking photos.
I will go back to see my specialist in 2 weeks time, after he's seen the results. He said that we will take the opinion of his specialist friends as well.
I have booked with a digestive system specialist as well, I will let you know of the results.
I remember now, this started (as the lady mentioned in the post) after I took anti reflux medicine for couple of weeks to stop my reflux. .

HI Sellinghouse, I have to tell you about my case, the symptons and conditions that you have described, are identical to mine, in my case, except that i am 60 years of age and in the best of health, except for the (past) discomfort at the rear end. it had blighted my life, and stopped me enjoying my hobby, which is walking,,,but the irration and soreness, limited my activities. well i,m pleased to say that it has gone,,gone entirely. i now know what was the cause of it. FOOD. I have had the condition for approx 5 years, and feared all kind of medical conditions, but now i know how to control it. i discovered it purely by accident, A little while back, i wanted to lose some weight, quickly.I went on a low carb diet. i was pleased with the resulting weight loss, but almost immediately, the rear end blight stopped. It was amazing, after all that time , the relief was incredible, but i also want to add, that due to the diet, i do not visit the toilet as often, which seems to give the "exit," time to repair, recover, whatever...as soon as i return to normal diet, straight away after the first defecation, the condition is back,,,so now i know that certain food or foods are the cause of my condition. i know that it is food in the carbohydrate range, but not bread, i dont know if it is fruit or yoghurt, or whatever. i will try to eliminate certain foods over time, but what a relief to know, that i can regulate and control it ,,,i hope this is of any help to other sufferers,,,check what you are eating,,bye all ,, PILOTERROR

62 year old male with similar problem of irregular bowl movements. I seem to go through cycles of normal bowl movements, then scattered small pieces with stringy attachments, clear liquid discharges, etc. I have continuous abdominal gas and discomfort. And occasionally if I'm not careful, uncontrolled clear liquid discharges. I have had intestinal problems before and they seem to occur after my having had a procedure that required anesthesia. After a colonoscopy or hernia repair or hip replacement. For over a year I visited a specialist to no avail. I've gone through natural herbs to chase possible parasites and cleansing. I take daily probiotics "ultimate formulation" and eat my daily stone cut oatmeal with citrucil. Like so many of you I am frustrated. What's problematic is that I don't have faith in the Dr's. They seem to treat it so casually. I even had to offer a stool sample on my own because they had not even suggested taking one. Instead they seem to be bent on x-rays and blood tests that all came out normal. The result of a full colonoscopy did not lead to any findings. Later I read that one stool sample is not enough to determine parasites, you need several over a cycle. I still have no clue and am always trying different things. At least reading this and some other websites, I've found evidence that there are others out there with similar problems and I'm not just imagining things. I will keep reading and hoping that one of you will find something that works for me or maybe I'll figure it out and help one of you.

Hey PILOTERROR , and all.
Many thanks . indeed I will start on the spot taking carbohydrates off my diet, Yes I have some add on kilos which I I will take off as well.
I will you posted,
An update as well: My Dr has ran out of options. LOL. he asked his colleagues with no suggestions. When I entered his clinic one month ago, he started , let me read the results of you, this test: Normal, That test Normal....all normal. Then he started to invent things. He gave me Close and imoduim and metamucil to strengthen my anal muscles, even though they are normal. This gave me a very constant constipation uncomfortable feeling , and I will abandon them from tomorrow after I read PILOTERROR's post.
I also went to the digestive system specialist, one of the best in Sydney, charged me 270$ for 15 mins and said everything in me is normal. He wanted to do colonscopy , but I think I will cancel it. I totally agree with PILOTERROR , it started with the anti reflux and food and weight is important.
My friend's wife is dietician. I will ask her to prepare a list for food with carbohydrates and post it here.
Also PILOTERROR many thanks and keep us updated with your diet. You opened a door of hope.

I will find a solution to this ridiculously annoying c**p! 23 year old male, who has been dealing with this problem for over 7 months. seemed to be having minor issues with an extremely poor diet leading up to getting pneumonia and needing to take antibiotics. After the first round of antibiotics my issues got much worse. the pneumonia came back and i started round 2 of the antibiotics. my condition got much worse still. the pneumonia came back a 3rd time and i started round 3 of the antibiotics (this is all over the course of about 7 months) and my condition got much worse still. the pneumonia was on the verge of coming back a 4th time and i started supplementing Oil of Oregano (pneumonia gone). what i found out is regular use of this stuff actually seems to be benefiting my GI track as well. Im doing some experimenting with it, but so far ive noticed that when i lessen my dosage my 'problems' get worse.
Ive done hours upon hours of research regarding GI track issues. what ive noticed is that most all of these remedies within these posts deal directly with influencing the 'flora' (as its called) within the GI track. Im fairly convinced that imbalances within the inner flora and bacteria are causing my issues. i am currently on the probiotic Activa and noticed a difference between round 2 and 3 of the antibiotics, but now after round 3 (2 months ago) the probiotic is not cutting it. I am also currently researching the effects anxiety, sleep, seratonin, and other neurotransmitters in the brain have with regards to the intestinal system... i think its important to look at this problem from as many angles as possible given the truth that all bodily and mind function has a relationship to all other bodily and mind functions.
I am going to dedicate most all of my time to figuring out a solution to this debilitating problem, and will keep you all updated on what information i find out. sadly, the medical community (as most of you have experienced) is completely ignorant when it comes to something that isnt listed in its volumes upon volumes of nonsense.

To Roborg,
Wow! I can't believe I am not alone with this same problem. At one time I was told that if you suffered from Constipation in the past as I did, you would eventually have this problem. You lose the elasticity around the anus which in time you will have some form of leakage though I have not had this confirmed. I am just too embarrassed to talk to my doctor about it. I have noticed it is getting worse as I am getting older (48 - female). It is so depressing for I am not 70 yet and have this sort of problem. I can just imagine when I am 70...no 55 years old. So some of you all say it might be the diet or antibotics...I am going to have to pay more attention to all this. Thank you all for the info. I just happen to stumble on this website and I am glad I did. Again thanks for the info.

I just happened to come across this site while looking for something to cure my problem. I have to say I am surprised it affects so many. I have had this condition for over ten years now and have just learned to live with it. My wife has always said it was because of what I eat. I love spicy and highly acidic foods such as tomatoes. When eaten in high quantities I notice a significant increase in discharge and discomfort. Also if I drink beer or soda it does the same. I will try and follow the guidance posted here and see where it gets me. Good luck to everyone in your pursuits on controlling this problem.

if anyone is interested i'd like to see if i could get some feedback on supplementing oil of oregano regularly. I've been doing research and it appears that these problems could stem from fungal overgrowth. oil of oregano has helped me mildly (it is a natural antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal), and i'm curious to see if anyone else experiences the same. if so then i might be a few steps closer to devising a system of lifestyle changes that will overcome these problems.
currently ive cut out all meat products that are raised with growth hormones and antibiotics, cut out foods and drink containing sugar, increased my plain yogurt intake from 0 to a lot, cut out starches and carbohydrates (except rice), take oil of oregano twice a day, and started taking an herbal immune booster containing echinacea and a few other ingredients that supposedly have anti-fungal properties. after two days i will say that i feel different. my bowel issues have lessed a lot, but my entire body seems different. if in fact this is a fungal overgrowth it may be noted that die off of fungus releases toxins which inevitably cause symptoms within the body as it tries to keep up with filtering the stuff out.
anyone willing to try the oil of oregano let me know what you find.

i have the same problem. I'm a 35 year old female. I was reading these posts and remembered that a friend of mine has an autistic child. She had him on the dr brown's diet. Which really did help him, but my point was that he had a yeast infection in his anus. He had was always scratching his behind. So I'm thinking that maybe it's a yeast infection. I know the probiotics really work to get the excess yeast out of your belly and then it will stop the yeast from going through your intestines. Im def going to try the cranberry because as a woman I know that yogurt and cranberry help with yeast and UTI's. So I hope this helped some of you at least. Good luck.

I also had to take anti-biotics, very strong ones for H.Pylori. This is the bacteria that lives in your stomach and is supposedly one of the causes of acid reflux.
My acid stomach has not changed at all since taking these extremely strong anti-biotics, but since taking them a couple of things have happened.
1 I now move my bowels daily. I've never bee this regular in my life and I'm now 50 years old.
2 My faeces is very soft. Again, I'm not used to this, apart from the odd time mine has always been quite firm.
3 Burning and itching always follows defecation and is sometimes so severe as to be distracting to the extreme.
4 My rectum leaks. For up to 3 hours following bowel movement I am continually wiping myself. The wiping alleviates the itching so some small degree and for a short time.
For anything up to 3 hours following defecation I can't walk the dog even, as the act of walking is painful. It is as if the whole of my rectum is 'rubbing against itself' and is extremely sore.
I have tried Canesten, an anti-fungul cream; Germoloids, an over-the-counter cream for haemorrhoids (piles), and Rectogesic from my GP who felt there may be a fissure.
Generally speaking Rectogesic makes things worse, more itching and the feeling that I can only describe as small bubbles coming out of my anus. Canesten eases it in an extremely small way and Germoloids eases it a fraction more.
I've never had anything really like this in my life, and it started a short time after beginning the anti-biotics mentioned, and at the same time I began taking Symvastatin for (non-diet related) high cholesterol.
I've now stopped the Symvastatin due to other problems.
If anyone can come up with a rational suggestion I would be extremely pleased to hear it as this has got me feeling quite down and frustrated, and even unfit as I haven't been able to walk any real distance since about October 2009.
I can't wait for someone to identify just what this is.
