I have been a diabetic for a couple of years, controlling my blood sugars by diet and such. I went to the doctor today and he said I need to go on medication now. I am wonderig about whether I need to be on it every day. I know some days I do pretty good with my blood sugars so can't I just take the Metformin when I have high blood sugars? Then I don't have to take it all the time, just when I need it. I don't like taking medication so I would like to vary the amount of Metformin to my needs. This would be a good thing. I don't want to take anymore than I need to after all it's my body to do what I want with it. Does anyone else do this too. Maybe if I have a little bit of a high blood sugar, I can just take a half of a pill. If it is really high, take the whole pill. If it is running normal, then I won't take any. I don't see why I need to take any if I have a normal blood sugar.
You need to follow the prescription your doctor has on for the metformin. Even if your blood sugars are doing great, you still need to take your medication. It is making your pancreas work better by stimulating the beta cells on it so continuing on this med will improve the functioning of this organ. You don't want to pick and choose a day to take any of your medications. Medicine works better when you take it consistently. Many times people will take their antidepressants, for example, only when they are depressed. It just doesn't work that way. You will need to take your metformin on a regular basis to get the optimal benefit.
