I was taking birth control pills for about six days ever since my period started, then I stopped I haven't stopped bleeding since
I usually bleed heavy for six days because I'm anemic and now my period has been going on for two weeks!! Not so heavy though.
Should I be worried?

I'm totally different from you guys!!!! I was on bc for a year and decided to get off to start a family. I've had 4 periods since August 9th!!! I'm currently on my 4th. I've been off the pill for 6 weeks....but in the last 5 weeks...i've had 4 periods. :? They are all normal periods, 4-6 days long. I understand I could be hormonal but usually it's the other way around like late to no periods like ya'll. What's going on? Any ideas?
Wow!! I am so happy that I AM NOT ALONE!!! I was on Nuvaring for 3 years and was getting anxious and cried at stupid things. Not to mention symptoms of having a UTI. The doctor found traces of blood in my urine. Thats when I decided to go off BC all together. Felt it would be good to give my body a break. S I got a regular period right away but then didnt get one for 2 months then got 2 in one month. and the second one is lasting over a week so far. Its not crazy heavy but even feel a little crampy. I keep thinking there could be something wrong but know its my way just trying to get regulated. I am so happy to be off Birth control. I realize now how powerful it is and how many problems it can cause by reading everyones posts. I am frustrated but relieved at the same time.
I am reading everyone's stories and I have been going through a bit of a crazy situation myself with birthcontrol and periods. I have been on birth control continously for 6 yrs since my second son was born. I was taking Othro Tricyclin the whole time. Last December I had sore breasts and I was cramping. I thought for sure I was prego. I had two weeks until I was suppose to get my next period so the wait was driving me crazy..lol I was still feeling all the symptoms of pregnancy. I took a few tests and they were all negative. What an emotional rollercoaster. So to be sure I went to the doctors and that test was negative too. The worst part was she looked at me like I was crazy and said what are you doing here? Like OMG...I can't believe you just asked me that. I was told that once a person has been on bc for 5 + years your body becomes use to it. Ok....what does that mean? Does your bc just stop working. So I changed bc and my emotions were everywhere so feb 10 I stopped bc all together. I have not had any irregular all within the a few days of the last month but one thing that has not happened before was I would spot for two days then I would get my actual period for four. Does that mean my body is returning back to the way it was before I started taking bc? Like another said I thought I would give my body a break too. It has been 6 months and I decided to go back on it because my boyfriend is making more and more comments about it. Has anyone felt like you just can't talk to anyone about what is going on inside of you? My boyfriend is dead set on not having anymore and I am to the point where I have found the man I love and who I want to spend the rest of my life with and would someday have a little one. Put together we have four boys but deep down I have always wanted a girl. It saddens me to think that I may never get the girl I have always wanted. Can't say anything because he is so freaked about it that the first thing he does it starts asking me a 100- questions. It is nice to be able to talk with individuals going through situations like mine.
i stopped the pill in october of last year and now it is october again and i started spotting brown and pink blood in august some months and some months i see nothing and when i do spot it just lasts for like a day and then it is gone i am scared to and also have really no idea whats goin on although i have been to the doctor they have done ultrasounds and they say every thing is fine and it just takes time from where i was on the birth control for so long i was on it from the time i was 13 to the time i was 19 and the doctor told me that every ones body is different and different ppl could take longer that my body was dependant on it and it had to get out of my system..hope this helps ured
i got off of the patch sep. 24th its now oct.24 and i have had 4 periods. the first one was the 14th of sep. (before i stopped the pach) then again the 26th of sept for 4days. then again oct 12-16th and now i started my forth period of the month yesterday ( 23rd oct). i jsut cant figure it out and i'm going nuts i have mild cramping and the periods all seem to be lite. i'm getting aggervated with it, my hubby comes home in 24days from deployment and well i would liek to not be on my period or atleast know when i will get it....grr..
Birth control pills artificially change the hormone levels in the body and suppress the body's normal cycles for ovulation and menstruation. Coming off of these hormones will cause changes in the body. As your body returns to its normal hormone levels, you may experience many different side effects. Some of these are Temporary infertility due to long-term use of birth control this means that you have been suppressing normal ovulation. For most women, birth control pills prevent ovulation from occurring at all. After several years of artificial hormones telling the ovaries not to release an egg, it will take some time for your body to begin to self-regulate and begin telling your body to ovulate again. Many women find that they do not ovulate for approximately three months after stopping birth control pills, but some report taking a full year or longer to begin ovulating again. A very small group of women do not ovulate on their own anymore and will need to take medication to stimulate the ovaries if they want to conceive. Other common side effects are headaches and nausea, some weight loss or gain, exhaustion or fatigue and the biggest one to answer most of your questions irregular menstrual cycles. After coming off of the pills, the reproductive system can be "out of whack" for a little while. Many women experience spotting, abnormal bleeding, heavier or lighter than normal periods, and changes in the length of periods. A woman who was irregular before taking birth control pills will probably go back to being irregular, while a woman who was always regular will most likely go back to being regular within three to six months. Hope this helps!

Here's an article on what to expect when stopping birth control. Irregular periods are part of the normal symptoms. ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed
I am having the same issues. I was on trisprintec for about two years, and stopped in March of this year. At first my periods were normal, but now they have become very irregular. I was two weeks late in Septemeber, started again only 11 days after i stopped. Then it was about 29 days, but the period itself was not normal. I was spotting on one day, then nothing, 7 days later i would spot for 4 or five days, with little or no cramping, until the last two days with extreme cramping. We are ttc and I am worried that this will cause issues? Any advice?
I know it's been a long time since this was posted but finding it makes me feel so much better! I came off of birth control pills 6 months ago after my husband got his "all clear" after his vasectomy. My periods have been so irregular! The first one came 3 weeks after my last pill placebo period, then it was 31 days, then 26 days for a few months which I thought was my new "normal" but now I am on day 31 of my cycle and nothing! I took several pg tests, all negative and since my husband had his vasectomy I didn't really think I was pregnant. I was starting to be concerned there was something else wrong with me but it seems my cycle must just still be adjusting to whatever normal is. I really wish doctors were more honest about how long it can take for your cycle to regulate itself after stopping the pill!
Before I started taking the birth control pills I had a fairly regular cycle. I started taking the pill at age 18 and consistently took it for seven years. I am currently 26 and have been off the pill for five months. My first full cycle took two and half months... During that time I took several pregnancy tests, which all came back negative. I have heard it takes your body a while to get back to normal, however this seems rather long. Is there anything you can do or take to help get your cycle back on track? I would like to get pregnant soon, but am not in a hurry.
Any advise?
Any advise?
Dear Readers,
Firstly, I have read your posts and have empathy for your concerns. By way of background, I am not a doctor and do not profess to have any medical expertise. As such any "advice" that I may provide is subject to the usual caveats that you should seek counsel from your own doctor as to the most appropriate means of treatment.
What is abundantly clear however, is that there is no clear, straightforward answer to each individual problem. It is apparent that the medical profession errs on the side of caution when offering advice. This, I would humbly submit is due to lack of clear substantiated data as to the effects of mid to long term hormonal birth control use.
There is no guide rule to abide by; as is apparent, there are different effects experienced by each individual woman. I personally used the depo provera injection for a number of years followed by the contraceptive patch. My periods have been completely irregular for the past 9 months having ceased use.
I am currently experiencing my first and what I believe to be regular period, with associated symptoms,(which I never experienced previously, mood swings, depression, localised pain in my shoulder (?)) Admittedly an awful process.
What is undeniably correct is that use of hormonal contraceptives affects your menses. As to the extent I can't qualify however I can advise that I'm 34 and have been clear of hormonal birth control for nine months. This is my first period proper.
You will no doubt have been subjected to various comments as to age, dietary habits, smoking. alcohol intake etc. All generic advice applicable to any medical condition. What I would however advocate is this, you know yourself and your cycle. Age is obviously an issue so if your'e over 35 you know the issues. If you're experiencing any pain then contact your GP as soon as possible. Otherwise, keep a note of your cycles or absence thereof and monitor your own condition.
Trust this has been some assistance.
Concerned reader.
I was on Nuva ring for 8 months. Before that I have had irregular periods a lot. I am not trying to get pregnant though. I got off it because I had gained 25 lbs in that seven months, different discharge accompanied with a different odor (not a bad smell just different I suppose because of the hormones) and it increased my anxiety. first two months I was off it I had my period for those two months. I became regular again but with longer and heavier periods. I have now missed my period for two months. I have no symptoms of pregnancy what so ever. I also took 4 pregnancy tests all of which are negative. I have been stressed ( I just moved to a new town and started a very stressful job). Its good to know some women have had the same issues after going off birth control.
I was on depo shot for 3.5 years (was never told how horrible it was). My friend was on it for 3 years,a nd is now infertile form it! I ended it in feburary and switched to the patch in march (which caused continual extreme cramping to the point i was throwing up). I stopped using patch after first month. I didnt have a period for the follwoing 4 months. but for the last month i've had continual LIGHT spotting, which is obnoxious. however, i am hesitant to get on any birth control because my system became very messed up from what methods i used. Anyone have complications from them?
It may take all while to get your regular periods back but every birth control is different. You want to ask your caregiver tho just to be safe.
