I am SO glad yet so sad that I am not the only one. It is the worst feeling in the world knowing that you truly are a thin person, but you cannot get your stomach to stay flat! Sometimes I have gone the whole day without eating just so my stomach won't stick out. I cannot figure out what the c**p is wrong with me!

My doctor thought that it could be something about my intestines not working properly, so she suggested colonmax. It works good sometimes, however it is not fixing it completely and it makes me really crampy and have gas. So, I don't take that too often. I thought it was food allergies and completely went off sugar, but I can't go off everything to make it better. I don't know why this is happening to us, but I hope we can find the solution pretty soon because it's terrible for a teenage girl's self esteem!

I am 5'7" and my stomach has always swelled up and stuff, but it has gotten worst. I weighed about 125 last year, which was a perfect weight in my mind. I did feel fat, but I knew I really wasn't. Then, I gained 15 pounds all the sudden and it won't go away :(

Seriously, I wish you luck on finding your solution, and I hope you will share with us if you do!

OMGoodness...this is unbelievable. So glad I found this thread. I just turned 15 a few days ago, and I'm 5' 3 5/8", and only weigh 95 pounds. I have spent my whole life underweight - a huge portion of that is just my body type, though, since I have a really small frame. This stomach protrusion thing has literally haunted me my entire life. I became anorexic because of it, though I've recovered now. Lately I've been trying to figure out what the problem is, because I have almost no fat on my stomach (like, the TINIEST layer imaginable is all I've got - it's pretty much skin)

First of all, I KNOW that I have anterior pelvic tilt, so I'll be doing some exercises to try and fix it. As a side benefit of the ab/glute strengthening the APT exercises will cause, I well have more toned transverse abs, further fix helping the problem.

I will also try to drink more fluids to decrease fluid retention, while simultaneously avoiding drinks at meals since they just cause your food to expand in your stomach.

Hopefully, gaining weight (because I definitely need to) will help - if I'm a little "thicker," my stomach distention will be less evident.

I might also do some wraps to tone my middle.

In addition, I'll be vamping up my protein intake, doing a Candida cleanse, and testing for a gluten allergy.

Finally, c'est la vie. I am God's creation. If this is how I am, then that's okay. Plus, I'm not the only one: I know plenty of girls who get "food babies" after eating. As others have mentioned, I think a huge amount of this is our culture - we see airbrushed super models and compare ourselves to them. Um, they're not exactly a good reflection of reality. This is why I became anorexic - because I compared myself to my friends who had flatter stomachs (who, now that I have a better body image, I have noticed have distended stomachs after eating too. Also, they have no butts, whereas I do, which has caused me to develop APT...) But I digress.

Blessings to you all!

If it seems specifically linked to when you eat, it may be an alergy or food intolerance. It's easy to test for: try going off gluten or dairy for a few days, and see if either of those make a difference. You can always go talk to your GP (doctor), that's what they're there for. They should take your concerns seriously, or they aren't a good doctor.

I am 5'4 and I used to be 90lbs with a completely flat tummy. As I aged ( now 39), I am now 150 lbs. n I absolutely love my new weight. I was waiting forever to gain weight. The weight went to my butt which I love but it also went to my stomach. My stomach is so big that it begins right under my brests n just gets bigger as if im pregnant. There r rumors allllll around my job that im pregnant since they have known me to b small. My daugjter told me to go to the Dr. because she is very concerned. I jus figured it was because I always ate tons of pasta n sweets n bread. I nowchanged my diet n even exercise a bit but my tummy is stilllllll huge. Wth! My clothes do not fit the same. Instead of the sexy waist I have a pair shape. uggggggggg! I let it go because I wad planning on getting pregnant but its aking too long n my tummy is only getting bigger n bigger. Someone please!!!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, it's "pear" shaped. Like the fruit. (not pair)
2nd, most of what causes me to be distended and often associated with cramps is my consumption of anything carbonated. Champagne, colas, (beer counts but I don't drink that), Orangina for example, diet coke, etc... My mother will say " you need to do some situps." I think that always sounds ridiculous because I tell her it's like there's air inside. After a while I confirmed that it is by avoiding carbonated drinks. Also I cut out coffee just for fun. I'll have about a cup or two a month now. I STILL can't avoid sweets and chocolate no matter HOW hard I "try". Sometimes I have to literally squeeze my belly to get the air out and I feel better. After a few days of no carbonation, and after my period is over, it'll flatten out. PS I'm 29, 95lbs, 5'2'' and on April Fools I posted my belly as being pregnant though I wasn't. It's flat today (4/13/13). I love my body and it's shape.

Distended bellies in underweight people and children is caused from being malnourished. When you avoid calories you also avoid all the good things that food provides. I'm 5'2'' and 95lbs naturally. I had bronchitis for two weeks and lost 5 pounds and hated it!! Took about two weeks to gain the weight back. There will never be a day where I weigh over 100 pounds. I'm 29 and have never broke 100lbs no matter how hard I try. Personally, I think between 90-100 would be right for you and no one would judge you for being overweight. In fact, I am constantly reminded how thin I am every time I interact with someone. So the reality is, 79lbs is too little. The better you eat, the flatter your stomach will become actually. You are working very hard against it.

From Yahoo Answers: "The condition is calledl Kwashiorkor (see link below) and is symptomatic of protein malnutrition. You need to have salt and protein in your blood to hold fluid in the blood vessels. With low protein levels (low oncotic pressure), the blood can't hold fluid in the vessels and so it leaks out as edema. This collects in the abdomen as ascities. They do not have "fat bellies," but fluid filled bellies. There are some other mechanisms that go into a lot of complicated biochemistry. But the end result is that there isn't enough energy to "pump" that fluid back out.

I am 6'0 265lbs. the fat in my stomach I can pinch the skin at 3-5 inches at most. The obliques are around 1/2" at most pinched. My body fat is roughly 24% but it seems my visceral fat must be near 50%. The rest of my body is fairly thin. It seems disproportionate that my belly measures 50" most days even when I have dropped 30lbs. My hips/waist measures about 41" and is thin at that size. I figure my stomach should measure closer to 44" currently but for some reason I have this extra size that really makes no sense. My skin around my stomach has been getting noticably thinner as I go to the gym almost everyday doing cardio and weights.

Here is some outlying issues. I had an apondechtomy and afterwards I swear my stomach was much more distended than it had ever been before surgery. I had a rupture and peritonitis as well. I have at best count 4 hernias in my stomach. I still try and do a little ab workout, I just can't go crazy or my stomach will actually cramp and twist to the point I have to hold it. It would initially cramp like this after about 15 crunches but has since mellowed out over the years.

My stomach is incredibly strong to begin with. I used to do martial art demos where I would take punches and kicks to the stomach area from anyone. I don't think this has anything to do with it but could be a factor in the hernias.

I'm really trying to figure out if I should have it looked at or if there is a better method for getting rid of visceral fat, if that is the major issue.

I do have a natural distension from lower belly breathing for years and that may be some of your complaints. This type of breathing promotes stronger and healthier organs. Often the organs will grow in size such as the liver and lungs to compensate for the deep breathing and exercise. I already assume my belly size will have that amount of distension. But mine seems abnormal especially since it happened right after a surgery.

Hi! I have the same exact problem: I'm 14 years old, 160.5 cm tall, weight about 44 kg, and my body is quite thin, but my stomach looks like I'm pregnant! I'm a vegetarian, almost vegan, actually, and I have no idea what I should do to make my stomach stick out less! It looks bad in T-Shirts, I always have to suck it in. I don't like exercising, and I don't do it often, although we do have P.E. class every week. So if anyone has any solutions, I would be really happy if you shared! Thanks! :)
