I believe is because there is a reason we have our periods every month. It's our way to cleanse our body. Now this has nowhere to go and it makes us gain weight. Eating right helps.

Uugghhh YES! I have also gained about 50lbs.
My dr told me before I had it done that it doesn't cause weight gain......BS! I love not having a period, but I still cramp, and now I'm fat :(

I am a 44 yr old fitness instructor/professor of Kinesiology. My sister talked me into getting an ablation when I turned 40 and decided I was done having children. My periods were so horrible (as she said it gets worse w/age) and they lasted 10 days every 3 weeks. Instead of researching the procedure, I just told my OBGYN "ablation" and boom it was done. I had no idea it meant "burning your uterus".
Well, that was the most HORRIBLE decision I have ever made. I had immediate severe depression like "oh my gosh, what have I done!! I can never have another baby". Even though I didn't want one, it took away my option, I felt like I may have well had a hysterectomy, and my "womanhood" was gone. My body changed. I had zero wrinkles, a flat belly, and my chest was just as perky as the day I got married.
Since then, (4 1/2 years), I have a pooch in my belly that only gets worse. I eat perfectly clean like a nutritionist aka Dr. Axe. I have tons of wrinkles especially around my eyes (same thing happened to my sister). I use coconut oil and tons of natural remedies for skin care, and I take keratin. I take my weight in supplements every morning. Only drink lemon water. I am on Shakeology autoship and drink one a day w/ fruit and kale and power green superfoods. My body is flabby and my breasts sag to my belly. I take probiotics and my digestive system is clean. I STILL have a belly pooch.
I imagine this is what menopause feels like. It's as if I went from age 39 to age 60. It's hard enough to grow older, but this procedure will affect every aspect of a woman from emotional to physical.

It happens because the surgery makes our bodies act as if we're going into menopause. No more periods. Weight gain. Especially in the belly, sensitive, swollen, water belly. Our uterine enlarges because of the scar tissue that naturally forms after the procedure. The same c**p that happens as we age, we get larger and our hormones are affected due to the loss of either estrogen and or progesterone.

I had this procedure done a little over 2 years ago and have gained 16 lbs. I asked my doctor if there could be a relation to this and she didn't seem to think so but it does seem strange.

Wow, I can't believe some of these very insensitive replies. Every persons response to ablation is different. I would say it is more than a coincidence that a large amount of the ladies are experiencing abnormal weight gain. It is rude to imply that it is because perhaps they haven't been eating well or exercising. I don't think anyone has a reason to come on here and lie. Most people are in tune with their body to know when something isn't right. Just because it didn't happen to you, don't discount someone else's experience. The body reacts in all types of ways when you get to messing around with the uterus and ovaries. Just because a doctor tells you NO, that can't happen doesn't mean it is TRUTH!

Hi I know you wrote this over a year ago. But how soon after did you gain the weight? I was fine and suddenly 3 months in I look like I'm in my first trimester. All in my uterus

I had my procedure in Dec of 2015. I've gained around 25 lbs...to what seems to be all in my belly region. Clothes still fit, just uncomfy. I'm miserable.

I'm like all of you. I gained weight in my stomach area and have never been able to lose it and it's been years since I've had my surgery.

From what I have been told is it is from the change in hormones. Even though you still have your ovaries the blood flow to them was changed by the ablation which will effect your hormones

I am so grateful I found all of you! I had my procedure in 2009 and since then I have gained 60 pounds and it seems its all in my stomach! I went to the doctor - thyroid is fine - no diabetes. I thought I was just getting fat because of menopause but this makes so much more sense to me. I just dont know what to do anymore. Thank you all for sharing your story. I feel better knowing I am not alone. Best to all of us!

I was thinking I should get an ultrasound to see if there is an issue. This is so frustrating! Did you ever get one?

I had the procedure in 2008 ,had abdominal ultrasound. Showed a small cyst in unterus. Doctor talked me into ablation instead of D&C, which I wanted. 1st year didn't gain any weight. 2nd year put on 20 lbs. I exercise 4-5 x a week. With in 3 months of procedure had another ultrasound ended up with 7 cysts on liver & more in my uterus. Up until the point of the cyst I had no female issues I was 49 in great shape, normal hormones. I think this procedure screws up your hormones they don't tell you your ovaries shrink. Iv'e talked a few friends out of this procedure for these reasons. This also through me into menopause.
