Hi, you may never read this if your post was 6 years ago, i had pappillary thyroid cancer and i went to the mayo clinic in Rochester MN, they told me they ussually always remove the complete thyroid if the biopsy shows cancer, they also told me ahead of time they generally remove the front 12 limpnodes, and check them in surgey to confirm if they have cancer in some of them, 4 of my left and 1 of my right limpnodes had microsscopic cancer cells in them. they do it cherry pick they reomve all 12 in the front around the thyroid to help stop reacurance of the cancer, these limp nodes are in Compartment IV of the neck, it is standard to remove the whole thyroid and limp nodes if there is cancer in the biopsy/s. they had me take the 131 pill, 103 IU and my taste is not as good now, but it has only been 11 days since this, the 131 will kill any remaing thyroid left behind and hopfully any cancer if there is any, my lumpon my neck was 2.1 CM and had not spread into my neck, but was in some close limpnodes, comaprtment IV. not every one can go to the mayo one of the best, but it was cancer i was worried, it has been 8 weeks since my surgery that i hade in Nov of 2012, not sure on weight gain i yet, the worst thing was the low iodine diet and all the worries of the scans about weither it had spread anywear else, Any one that wants to comment let me know, i am not a expert but have tried to learn all i can. thank you
I had a total thyroidectomy due to Graves disease 11 years ago and am still gaining weight!!. No one believes me
that I exercise 3-4 times per week, cut out wheat, dairy, sugar and total calories I eat are 1700, sometimes 200 more. Its a battle, sometimes I wish I never had it done. Doctors say the levels are correct, its what you put in your mouth that makes you gain weight. Its really frustrating and sad that no one understands, especially when they tell you to try this diet or that one. I give up.
Hi Marf, I had a total thyroidoctomy and i went through a similiar experience. First, its not a quick recovery, i had my thryoidoctomy on Dec. 21st and now still recovering. My incision area is still sensitive/numb/a bit swollen. I am retaining allot of water around my face, i have eye bags which i NEVER had before. I gained over15 lbs (i was always at 127, now 145) and my beautiful think curly hair started thinning. I have not felt like myself since surgery. When i look in the mirror i dont feel like im lookign at my self, i feel like im looking at a less attractive/fatter version of myself. The strange part is that the swelling didnt happen immeidatley after surgery, it happened a few days after surgery when i started taking Synthroid, i dont know if it is the synthrroid doign this or the hypo thryoidism. I recently seeked out an alternative med doc and he put me on armour, ive been on it for a week and he claims i should be able to be relieved from my side effects from it, fingers crossed. Let me know everyone elses experiences.

I just wanted to add a few thoughts to all your comments. I have studied and read a lot on this topic. I have had a lot of time to think about this problem of weight gain after a thyroidectomy. I had a total thyroidectomy in 1993 due to papiallary thyroid Cancer. The cancer had also spread to several lymph nodes so I had a radical thyroidectomy with the removal of all lymph nodes including the sternomastoid muscle on the right side of my neck. After the thyroidectomy, I was placed only on Clyomel only (which is a t 3 short lived hormone) for at least 2 weeks in preparation for the I131 Radioactive Iodine treatment. Within 4 weeks I gained 20+ lbs. It was a gradual increase of Synthoid only for a period of that first year at least before the Dr. considered me to be the right dose. I was 43 yrs. of age at the time so my eating habits did not change. I firmly believe that until the medical Dr.'s start replacing each of the hormones that are made by nature in the thyroid one's metabalism cannot possibly return to normal. Some of us such as myself do not convert the t4 to t3 as we should so it is a problem emotionally as well as feeling fat and not being able to get it off. There are very few of the endo Dr.'s that will even consider t3 supplements and they will refuse to do the natural one "Armour". I finally found a Dr. willing to allow me to do Armour so I shall see. I have only been on it for a month but I feel better than I have for a very long time. I wish you all well on your journey for knowledge. If some of the expert Endo Dr.'s had the experience of a thyroidectomy, I think all of us would be a change in how this is viewed by the medical profession.
I had my thyroid removed as well because of cancer and i have gained almost 80 pounds :( and it just keeps getting worse. When I go to the dr for checkups etc..oh your snacking and not realizing it, or u need a workout routine, or the best one..you need to learn to push that chair away from the table..really??? drs are clueless. Im sorry we all have to go thru this, its awful but God bless all of u as well. Maybe someday someone will figure out what we can do and if u do Please please share :) love to all
I just had my thyroid removed two days ago. I went in to have my paraghyroid removed and they found cancer on the thyroid and removed it. I am still waiting for the pathology report, but the doctor believes it is state 1 palipatory. I am so worred about the weight gain. I am already way overwieght was trying to lose about 75 lbs before. Was having a hard time because I found it so hard to exercise because of the hyperparathyroism (sore mussels and bones). Has anyone that is overwieght had this surgery and been able to lose weight?
Hi, I also had a TT and a left lateral modified radical neck dissection..At first, I was losing weight and thought, this is great!! Now I have gained 10-12 lbs and had to up my synthroid because it is based on weight. I am eating the same and everything. Finally decided to let go of the clothes I can't fit into anymore and buy new shirts. I can always buy new "skinny" clothes if and when it comes to that. My doctor wants me to exercise more - get my metabolism moving, but it's been hot and humid and I'm afraid I'll have a heart attack!!! I get breathless just walking up the stairs in this weather because I have breathing issues too (this is 11 months post surgery). Will the weight gain continue? I have no clue, but I hope not. I have a semi recumbant bike which I promised my best friend I would ride every night for at least 5 minutes - can't do anymore right now. So, tonight will be the first night! Also, I eat really slowly now because of swallowing issues, which I always thought was considered healthier and still gaining....we'll see if the exercise really works - will give it a month to see even a 1 lb weight loss!!! Will keep advised!!
I am where you are right now with the exception of being on 175mcg of Synthroid..I have a husband of 33 years. We are the lucky ones.
I am 37yrs old female and I have had my thyroid removed 5 years ago too. I wish I never had to op and went for other treatment options. I have gained 35 kilos although I am eating healthily as I was before removal. So yes I hate my body and believe that it is due to the thyroidectomy even though the doctors don;t think so.
I am scheduled to have a complete thyroidectomy this week and am scared to death about the weight gain as I cannot afford it. I am hyper (with Graves Disease.) Can you let me know if you gained any weight? I do not want to trade one thing in for another. (I am having trouble with my heart racing and the biopsies did not rule out cancer so I am between a rock and an hard place.
