A pound of fat and a pound of muscle weigh the same, the only visual difference is fat makes you look fluffy and muscle makes you look leaner although you weigh the same. Doctors don't see a person as a person they only see you as numbers on a blood test.

If your doctor sees you as anything but a person, you need a new doctor

I'm a 59 yr old woman and had a total thyroidectomy 11 yrs ago for cancer. Weight gain has been a nightmare for me also, I have gained nearly 100 lbs also. I exercise regularly too and can't lose any weight! It's very disappointing, guess the next thing I'll need is a gastric bypass.

Do you take T4 and T3?

I'm schedule to have mine removed on January 31st. I have read so much about weight gain but not much about what people are taking or what their blood test results are. Do you take T4 and T3? also what is your TSH at?

I am scheduled for a total Thyroidectomy on January 31st 2017. I have had graves disease for 5 years. I feel fairly good and I don't really want surgery but I've been told that long term use of Methimazole and the fact that I have a goiter aren't good. I have read so much about weight gain, fatigue and the torture after removal. Can anyone tell me that they are taking Synthroid as well as Cytomel or Armour thyroid and that they feel well? I actually know 4 people that have had theirs removed and they are fine. This site and many others I've visited make me fearful. Please let me know if you have figured out your medication and what your blood test results are. Thank you

My situation was almost identical to yours. I had severe hyperthyroidism for many years...had a large goiter as well as numerous other smaller nodules. I was terrified to have the surgery because of the horror stories of weight gain. But I started having issues with swallowing and food going down so I finally decided to get it removed. I had a total thyroidectomy. It's been a few years now so I can give you my experience. I gained weight in the first few months because I had been used to being hyper for so long. I did gain about 15lbs in those first months, but I realized I had to change my outlook regarding food because I am different now...my body is different from other people so therefore I need to make different choices. So I did...nothing drastic...just ate better and started exercising daily. I ended up losing those 15lbs as well as an additional 10 or so more pounds. So have no fear you can control your weight. Regarding my dose and levels, after about a year my levels are steady and I am taking synthroid 137mg for the past year and a half. I was told that brand synthroid is more reliable as generic isn't always consistent. At one point I was on a lower dose of synthroid in conjunction with cytomel but I found the higher dose of synthroid to make me feel better. All in all...don't let the horror stories scare you. I was so scared but I look and feel better than I ever have in my entire life. Best decision I ever made.

I can't thank you enough! You are the only one that has given me a positive outlook. I couldn't agree with you more about our habits related to food and exercise. I have always been physically active but after being diagnosed with Graves I went into somewhat of a "funk" and gained 10-15 lbs from being on methimazole (slowing down my thyroid too much) and not being as active as I was prior. I'm still 10 lbs overweight so I worry about gaining even more after removal. I will have to focus on what I eat and stay consistent with exercise again. I would love to exchange emails so that we can stay in touch and maybe encourage one another along the way. I know you are doing well now and that makes me so happy for you and for others that may read these posts. Positive minds, and good doctors of course, really can make this process much less painful. Thank you again for really making my day.

How are you doing now? I just had a TT two days ago and am terrified of what's to come. How has your month been?

Hi, my month has gone very well. I've had a few days of being very tired and needing naps but my surgery went well. I felt tired the first few day's after removal and took it easy. Then I felt good on the 100mcg of Synthroid they prescribed for about 14 days. I feel a drop in energy at my third and now my 4th week. I'm a bit hypo now and they will be increasing my dose in the next day or two. I have really been watching what I eat and getting outside for walks or exercising at home though. I don't feel horrible just tired. Make sure to rest when your body tells you to and don't over do it to soon. I hope you feel well :)

I've heard positive things about naturally desicated thyroid. I have an autoimmune disease and was told it can raise the antibody levels so as long as I'm feeling well on synthroid I'll continue with it.
