I am 37 yrs old and I had a total thyroidectomy when I was 36. Since then I have gained at least 15 to 20 pounds and can't seem to get rid of the extra weight. I'm very unhappy with how I look now and almost have given up with the thought of loosing 5+ lbs or more. Help!

Sorry to hear about all these problems with weight gain. My issue is the opposite. I had a TT almost 2 years ago I also have an eleven and a half months dd . I've lost so much weight it's not even funny . I would like to gain a little so my prepregnancy clothes can fit. With I knew what's going on.

I had total thyroid removal due to cancer. I'm 49 and weighed 127 and gained 5 lbs before I found out I had cancer. I was feeling pretty tired often lethargic. I exercised a lot but also been thru few back surgeries n never gained weight but after thyroid removal and the fact before radiation therapy they take u off the thyroid meds. Your on a strict diet of basically fresh meat and veggies no salts no milk no nothing! Normally I'd lose 20lbs from that but no thyroid meds means your body is sh**ting down- dying. Ur metabolism isn't burning the food, it's being stored as fat. I got pics on my cell you can see I slowly was gaining weight. After radiation I was put on levothyroxin but it takes 3 months to build up in your system so u have to get blood work. Still too low so he increased n wait 3 more months, still too low so increased and wait 3 months. So this entire time of waiting n increasing your body isn't metabolizing your food as it use too. Most dr say the meds are same as your body produced - not true!!! Before thyroid removal I could eat cheese or drink calcium with thyroid meds you can't 4 hrs before or 4 hrs after or it will make the meds not work. Also your body would normally put out what it needs instantly. Now you have take meds n see dr every 3 months to adjust what your body use to do on its own. I don't eat breakfast till noon so it won't interfere with thyroid meds - I decide to start making me smoothie with 1/2c low fat organic yogurt n frozen fruit. Then dinner a salad with tomato n sprinkle some nuts n cheese n flax seed. Did this for two weeks! Lost nothing in weight!!! I've gained 21 lbs in one year! Thyroid dr said taking a added T3 is from a pig a pig thyroid n most dr won't give you RX for it but many people post it works!

Ok Kid, hold on to your Big girl panties! You will! gain a massive amount of weight, I had mine taken out because of a Goider, It was massive, This was in 2004. I weighed 112 pounds and in 2017 I weigh 175 pounds and can NOT lose this weight no matter what I do!, I have even seen diet specialist to no avail. No matter what you do? I would buy up every big girl jeans you can muster up because your gonna need them!, I am very blunt and don't sugar coat anything, Honey, I have been there and still going there as I am writing this to you!, Nothing helps, No Diet, no pills, I am on 200mg 4 pills I take every Thursday, I have my blood work done so much I have permanent scars from the needles, like every 6 to 8 weeks. be prepared to be a fat girl! It only gets worse!

You will be able to eat whatever you ate before honey, but? one thing you will find out is? what other kinds of foods you WON'T be able to eat is the real question. Foods like Cornbread, Frosted Flakes. You will find yourself choking on different things after your Thyroid is taken out.You can eat as much of anything you love like your celery and carrots as long as you chew them up really well. Prepare to gain weight and wonder why you will never be able to lose it! This sucks! I have seen diet specialist about my weight after my complete thyroid removal. I am blunt and to the point kind of person, Just don't sugar coat anything, I tell you like it is!~ I went from 112 pounds in 2004 to a whopping 175 pounds in 2017, I never stop activity so? I am not lazy, or est like a pig. Just to let you know I am on 4 pills once a week of 200 mg and have bloodwork every 4 to 6 weeks like clockwork that has my arms with permanent needle marks, I make the lab take blood from one of the many holes so I don't look like a junkie! Prepare yourself honey, it's all downhill from here!

I had my total thyroidectomy 3 weeks ago and have already gained 15 pounds. I was severely overweight 1 year before the surgery, lost 130 pounds when I started getting multiple nodules on my thyroid. When I finally seen the endocrinologist she gave option of 8 biopsies or 1 surgery. I opted 1 surgery. But she didn't tell me that I would start gaining the weight back. All biopsies from the surgery were benign. So now I TOTALLY regret having the surgery.
Advice to anyone who has the option of individual biopsies or surgery, DEFINITELY do biopsies first!
Doctors should give ALL pros and cons before any decisions are made. I feel it Al comes down to the all mighty $$$$. :(

The correct dose of medicine is key. Not everyone gains after removal. It takes dicipline with food and exercises to keep it off.

Don't worry my dear, you are never alone as the Almighty is always with you!
I had very similar issues after my Thyroidectomy. Then a friend told me that her doctor had prescribed the thyroxin meds by a different manufacturer and that made all her problems go away!
I shared that with my doctor and he did the same for me and it made a big change for the better for me too. I hope this helps you. Come back and let us know the good news.

I had a THYROIDECTOMY 15 months ago and my life has turned into a nightmare. I've gained 35 pounds and I can barely walk around like a normal person because of the chronic pain that has hitched a ride with the thyroidectomy.  I've also discovered that exercising too much is bad and not exercising enough is bad and that feeling like garbage almost everyday is now the new normal. I've had blood test done so many times and each time my numbers are "fantastic" and having endos tell me if your unhappy with your new roommate "chronic pain" seek a doctor to talk to, as if I'm nuts.

Sorry for the rant, I'm fed up with my failing health.
