I am having the same problem. I stopped nuvaring 5-6 weeks ago and have gained a good 5 pounds. At first I thought I must be pregnant and a friend even asked my husband if I was. Well, it turns out I am not. I hope this weight gain is temporary =( My husband has noticed as well. My gain is all in my stomach. I am a pharmacist and never expected or have heard of this weight gain with discontinuation. I have never experienced it with any other type of birth control (patch, pill) I would encourage anyone to report this side effect to the FDA so they can document it. If enough people report this, then it will be added to the drug side effect info. for patients.
Same here... If someone LOST the weight, please post it to give us all some hope... My belly is round like if I'm pregnant... but I'm not!
yes please i was not on the ring but i was on seasonic and been off since june and up to 32 lbs gain Never have i gained weight in my life im freaking out!!! what do i do has anyone had any luck I was on the pill for 10 years first time off
i stopped using the ring a week right before this past christmas...and already, my appetite has increased. i've gained about 3lbs already...but i'm actually liking the weight gain because i'm underweight...the only thing that is alarming is the rate at which i'm gaining weight....another thing i've noticed is a tenderness around the nipples...has anyone else experienced that? cause i was beginning to think i was pregnant. %-)
Holy cow! I can't believe getting off the ring puts weight on you! I too stopped to give my body a break. What kind of break I don't know. But I was on the ring for over 4 years. All was fine. Then I had this bright idea to stop. It's been two weeks off the ring. I've gained 8 pounds. I still work out and eat the same. My breasts are also very tender. Can anyone shed some info on this? Does it eventually get better? If not, I'm going back on the ring. No breaks!!
OMG. reading all of these posts scares me so much!
i stopped using the nuva ring two days ago & it was because i was getting really bad anxiety.
other than that, it was great. but i was curious as of the weight gain after stopping it & i came
across this. ive been working out every single day & its tough. i guess im going to have to increase
my work outs in order to avoid putting more weight on.

Me too! I went off NR on November 21st. My breast were staying swollen all month long, and the acne was ridiculous. Neither of those things have cleared up, and I have gained 22 lbs! I usuallly expect about 5 lbs over the holidays, but I also work harder at the gym to compensate. I am just as heavy as I was after 6 years on Depo, in two months! This is their way of making sure we keep using it. None of my clothes fith either, I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this, or if i had lost my mind. Well, since nobosy has informed of what going back on will do, I'm gonna do it, gotta check my calender, but pretty sure it will be in the next week. I'll update. And, like some of you, I have a strict diet and excercise program, and have for the last four year!
Well it's good to know what I have coming from all of you! Guess i can plan on packin on the pounds over the next year. I have only been off the NR for about 2 weeks now but have noticed the oily skin and the acne again. Something else I have been experiencing though is some stomach upset and diarrhea. Have any of you noted this after getting off the ring? And the other thing I have noted is the increase in anxiety. It's surprising to me that some of you noted this upon starting the ring. I never had any side effects from starting the ring. These are the things I have noted after stopping.
Hi girls. I just stopped using NuvaRing last Sunday. Now I'm very scared to gain the weight you're all talking about.
I've been on a diet for the past month and I lost 5 lbs already. I gained too much weight and that's one of the reasons why I gave up NR, also, my mood swings.
One thing I would suggest for you girls to do is take Spirulina and Chlorella daily. These two detox the body, some people use them to remove poisonous chemicals and metals off their body and I'm pretty sure you can use Spirulina and Chlorella to speed up the process of getting rid of the birth control chemicals left in the body. This could help with the side effects; gain weight and other problems.
I hope this helps. I'm not in the medical field, but I take vitamins once in a while, instead of chemicals. Look up Chlorella and Spirulina, they both derive from green leafy veggies. It's natural, but if you're taking other medications check with your doctor. Just in case.
I wish you the best!! :-D

Freakin out! I went off NuvaRing about 3 weeks ago because my dad's office ran out of samples. I've been lucky enough to get BC free for the past 6 years, but have been waiting for the samples to come in. I never had any symptoms when I started it, but now that i've stopped I've gained about 6 lbs. I recently became vegetarian, so I've been eating a LOT less and a lot healthier, so i'm completely shocked. My appetite hasn't increased in the slightest. I'm also on weight watchers and haven't strayed from the plan. Since I've been off the NR I also have seriously painful breasts; just putting on clothes literally hurts; and hard-core anxiety/fatigue. I'm going to suck it up and pay for it this month as soon as i can, and I will report back and let you know what happens.
I had the same thing with Yaz, never gained weight before in my life, NEVER, then 2 months on Yaz, then got so cranky I went back to my old POP, it's been 5mo now, I'm not gaining more, but it's shifting to my belly more each day. I know from PCOS research that belly fat is linked to high androgens... does anyone know what happens long term? I'm now only up 7#, so perhaps it's coming off with a little time, but I'm not happy with where it's going.
Heyv yall! I posted a while back somewhere, promising to update about going off the ring. I went two months without it, tryng to clear my system thts posible. I finally used my final ring in hopes of the gain stopping. WRONG. I used it and made an appt to try something new. I have to use the HD, and all they will give me is ORtho MICRONOR. I cant tell anything from this pill except I did not get my period and my boobs hurt. I would almost rather be back on mirana than to be so fat! Really, the first year or two of mirena is the best for me so far. I am busting my butt at the gym, never ever been this heavy. :-( I dont know what to do.. guess thats how they keep us using NuvaRing.
Hi everyone. I read this forum a few months ago when I was thinking about going off Nuva Ring. Needless to say, the stories about weight gain scared me a little bit. I decided I would get back on after a few months of being off NR to tell my story, regardless of how it turned out. So here goes...
I went off NR two months ago because my husband and I are trying to have a baby. I had been on it for almost eight years. I've always had pretty good control of my weight - I bring my lunch to work and I cook dinner 6 nights out of the week, so I'm pretty much always in control of what I eat. As for exercise, I walk my dog almost every day for 30 minutes, and for six months prior to going off NR I had been doing the elliptical for 15 minutes 3 or 4 days a week in the morning. My weight was typically between 124 and 126lbs.
After reading this forum, I knew that weight gain was a risk, so I decided to step up my exercise and really watch what I was eating once I quit NR. Nothing too drastic - I gave up desserts and made sure I was doing the elliptical five days a week and walking my dog every single day. At first, my weight did go up a bit - just one pound in a week, but it was enough to scare me considering I had stepped up everything. But I'm happy to report that after two months I am still in my normal weight range, hovering right around 125lbs. I've actually even let my exercise slack a bit in the past few weeks and I'm still doing okay. I'm definitely still battling the other symptoms of going off NR - sore nipples, irregular periods, cramping. And no baby yet but I'm still hopeful!
So, there you go. At least one success story in the battle against weight gain. Hopefully this helps calm some nerves out there! Good luck!

OMG. I thought I was the only one. I stopped using Nuvaring July of last year. I gained about 15 lbs within 3 months. I did not change my diet AT ALL and was even mildy excersizing at my first sign of weight gain. I recently started working out everyday and cutting my calorie intake in half and I havent lost any weight. I just started the Nuvaring again hoping it will be easier to lose the weight. This seriously sucks.
Have any of you actually checked to see if that weight gain is muscle mass? I wouldn't worry as much as what the scale says if your BMI is the same. Most of you claim to be working out more. And if you don't have those synthetic female hormones in overdose you might actually be experiencing your natural testosterone levels and gaining muscle mass. Don't worry what the scale says. Are you wearing your fat pants or your skinny pants?
