Due to me experiencing heavy symptoms of HELLP and doctor fearing I might get liver rupture and seizures, my baby girl was delivered at 28 weeks and is still in NCIU, now being at 36 weeks old adjusted. We were relieved when her first ultrasounds scan no signs of bleeding, but now after she had an MRI, we feel pretty lost. MRI showed she has bilateral cystic PLV or periventricular leukomalacia. The doctor that saw the results didn’t really give us too much information, except saying that this is somewhat common for preemies and that the effects we won’t able to see until they start showing up as developmental delays. This much I managed to find out by myself and we’re looking to get a new consult, but in the meantime, any help on this condition would be really appreciated.

Hello, Klmsmom.  I am so sorry about your little baby girl.  Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is a form of brain injury that is primarily in the white matter and it affects newborns, with which premature infants are the ones that are at the highest risk.  You are right about the developmental delays she will experience.  She may develop cerebral palsy or epilepsy in the future.  Unfortunately, there is no treatment or cure for it.  I hope for the best for you and your little girl.

Has anyone else have an infant that developed PVL and if so, what was the outcome?
