I have rare problem with hydrocele, so I have nobody to talk to about this. However, on the net I found there is commonly surgery to relieve pain hydroceletomy. I was happy, because that was exactly what my doctor recommended. However, I found there is a slight risk of infection and internal hemorrhage caused by hydroceletomy. That is why I would like you to explain to me what exactly hydroceletomy is.
Hydrocelectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a hydrocele, and I am sure you know hydrocele is collected fluid in the membrane surrounding the testes. Hydrocelectomy commonly performed to relieve the pain or reoccurrence of a hydrocele. Normally, hydroceles are not very painful, although they tend to be a soft swelling in the membrane surrounding the testes. As the hydrocele grows, the scrotum gets larger, but hydroceles do not damage the testes. The main symptom is scrotal swelling, depending if this problem is seen in children, and if it is caused by a failure of the processus vaginalis to close. Other way occurs in adults, where hydroceles develop slowly, and most of them develop because of blocked lymphatic flow. Surgery is used to remove large or painful hydroceles, as I believe your doctor decided with you. This surgery called hydroceletomy is also the recommended procedure, to remove hydroceles that reoccur, especially after aspiration. Aspiration of the fluid in a hydrocele using hydroceletomy is usually successful and generally, surgical repair of a hydrocele will eliminate the hydrocele.
I've just come from an exam by a 30 year vetran urologist.
He asserts that I have a hydrocele and that I need a hydrocelectomy. He says the cyst on the right testicle is benign, and the varicosele on the left spermatacord should be ignored, as I have two teens at age 52 now.
He says the 40% loss in size of the left testicle is because of the hydrocele, and rather than stick a needle in it to drain it and have it come back, he wants to have surgery in a month or two to remove the hydrocele.
The scrotum has NOT become larger, and I have no pain, no symptoms.
Why must we do anything? He says I could loose the testicle and the testosterone that it produces.
How much of this is true, since it contradicts what you've just said above.

I underwent bilateral hydrocelectomy 10 days ago at age 67 (fit). It was practically painless and I took only one pain killer tablet the first night, mostly to help me go to sleep and overcome apprehension that pain would come at night after the anesthesia wore off. I went back ot swimming yersterday (after nine days). The swelling has almost disapeared and I felt normal at the pool, contrary to before when I always turned to hide. Only regret, I should have had it long time ago.
