Hi, two days ago I went to my dentist for a regular checkup and he found some kind of an infection of my gums or something like that, he also found few cavities in my upper teeth. He said that he can't treat the cavities if there is any kind of an infection in the mouth so he prescribed me 100 mg doxycyclinee tablets and told me to take them three times a day, he also said that I shouldn’t take baby pills while taking doxycyclinee. I went to my local pharmacy store and asked for doxycyclinee but the pharmacist gave me vibramycin instead. Is that the same? The prescription that they gave me in the pharmacy seems to be the same. Do I still have to get off anti-baby pills?
Vibramycin is a “brand name” for doxycyclinee that means that a certain company uses the name vibramycin as their own. The contents of vibramycin and doxycyclinee pills are the same, they are basically the same kind of antibiotic only vibramycin is protected by patent laws and doxycyclinee is a so called generic name and can be used by anyone. Brand names for medicines are used by pharmaceutical companies for marketing purposes only, the fact that the name is different doesn’t mean that the contents of the package is different. The dentist gave you a generic name in the prescription and that means that the pharmacist can give you any of the medicines, no matter what their brand name is, as long as they contain doxycyclinee. Since the effects and side effects of vibramycin are the same as the ones of doxycyclinee that means that any rules that the dentist told you to follow while on doxycyclinee also apply for vibramycin as well. That means that you shouldn’t take oral contraceptives because they can interact with doxycyclinee and cause unwanted side effects. If you still have any doubts about this matter you should call your dentist or your general practitioner for advice.
