I train on roads exclusively. I would never, ever, run on the sidewalk. Asphalt is hard enough - concrete is even worse.

When I first started running I ran to a track, around the track, and back. At one point I was up to 10 miles on the track - 40 laps!

I'd LOVE to try some trail running - maybe next year.

Almost all on asphalt roads. I also never run on concrete. Some treadmill stuff in the winter when its too gross/cold/slushy/icy outside.

I have a nice track surface nearby that I really should start using for doing some speed work. Way too boring for longer runs----Gack!!

I have a trail race coming up next week, which I'm not psyched about (the surface, not the event). Two reasons: I have had a few 'near miss' injuries on trails where roots or mushy piles of stones were involved; and also I wear Mizunos, which have a big gap in the heel that just love to pick up monster stones along the course.

What surface do you train on? Very rough trails, gravel, and some asphalt. What surface do you prefer? Dirt. Do you agree with me that running on uneven surfaces make you a stronger runner? Yes. About half of my runs are on uneven, hilly, rocky terrain and my times are always slower; my feet will hurt temporarily, but knees are fine. When my knees begin to get sore from asphalt, I change to dirt/gravel and the pain goes away almost immediately. What are your experiences. Once I feel a sensation in my knees I back off the asphalt. I have a tendency to run my intervals on the asphalt part of the road, not on the shoulder.

I train on a mix of treadmills, indoor tracks, outdoor tracks, streets, dirt roads, packed trails and sand trails. Ultimately, my favorite is packed trails because I get less injury on that surface.

I have to agree with you, because I train on a variety of surfaces and I'm a stronger runner than those who train exclusively or primarily on one surface.

I really liked my Mizunos, but that was why I stopped running in them. Digging stones out mid race wasn't fun.
