The death of a family member or friend is painful loss. Loss happens to everyone. It is part of life. You should know that the loss of a loved one is life’s most stressful event and can cause a major emotional crisis.

You should find new activities, form new relationships, and become more active and independent.  You can with understanding, survive loss.  You should talk about your loss with friends and family. You must talk about the loss until you accept it. The more you talk loss, the more you will realize that the loss is real.

When someone offers you to help, take advantage of his or her generosity. You should seek the support of people who are sympathetic and supportive. Don't keep your feelings to yourself. Talk with someone.  You may need some time alone just after a loss, but as time passes, loneliness may become a larger problem. You have to learn to function without the person in your everyday life. You must keep going. Take care of your body, you should eat enough, exercise and sleep enough. Those are some ways of preventing some of the physical effects of grief such as weight loss. You should learn to understand your thoughts, feelings and the grieving process.  
You should give yourself simple pleasures, they can provide relief. You should give yourself time, but don't expect time alone to heal. You must know, that no matter lonely, sad, miserable or lost you feel, it will get better.

Support group and professional help

There are many sources of help available for someone who has suffered a loss. The support groups are necessary in order to move on with your life. Although support groups can be extremely beneficial, in some cases professional help may be needed.  You may suffer from anxiety, depression or thoughts of suicide. If you are having thoughts of suicide, if you think life is no longer worth living, if you think that your life is meaningless, you must talk to someone. If you think that you cannot live without your loved person, you need to seek professional help.

If you feel that you need professional help, you should find a therapist who can identify underlying or associated emotional problems and make proper treatment.  If you are severely depressed for too long a time, if you think about suicide, you need to seek professional help until you are better able to deal with your grief. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness.
