My daughter is a 11 years old and for over the past two years should we would wake up on random occasions in the middle of the night with severe vaginal pain. We went to the hospital, the doctor, a peads doctor, a gyno, a specialist and over and over again they said there was nothing wrong, and really believed she was being sexually abused. I was beside myself we went through every avenue and trying to ask her and discuss abuse with her, she was so upset that we would even think that. Needless to say she has not been abused, so I can breath, but we still did not have an answer. Finally the last specialist went to do a swab and my daughter jumped in agony. The doctor concluded she has vaginal atrophy which is not common in young girls more in woman going through menopause. She has severe vaginal dryness, so of course at night she is in pain when it is very dry. The doctor advised to apply coconut oil everynight and wow it has really worked. I hate that she has to do it daily but it is no harmful and it is not medication so I am grateful for that.

My daughter is 11 and been having this since she was 2! It is nothing you have described. She has been seen by numerous specialists and no one can figure out anything. She was premature so we are followed by many different doctors for other health conditions. She is very active in dance and soccer and very smart for her age. The only thing that somewhat works is a warmed magic bag and magnesium supplements. We have been doing this for 9 years and your 4 reasons have all been ruled out!!! Unless you have a child being ripped from their sleep with this pain, you really have no idea what it is like. And even as a mother I have no idea how severe her pain is! I just know it is 1pm and I am sitting on her bed googling (for the 150th time) vaginal spasms in young girls and I always come to these forums with so many mom's watching their poor daughters go through this! Feeling of totally helplessness! !!

We have been dealing with this for almost 9 years and so far magnesium supplements and heat are the only things that seem to help a bit! We are still baffled as are our immunologist, pediatrician and rheumatologist ( she had an auto immune condition so we see specialists regularly). Try a warmed magic bag or gel pack just make sure it's not too hot. A nice hot bath or shower seems to help as well! Hopefully they will grow out of it soon. My daughter started at about 2 and is almost 11! :(

When our daughter is constipated it is definitely worse!!! But she still gets it when she isn't constipated just not as severe!!! It's been almost 9 years of this for us. ..so heart breaking to watch them in so much pain and no clue how to help!

Definitely no worms! My daughter is almost 11 and has been dealing with this since she was a little over 2!! We have seen numerous specialists and they are all at a loss as well. Unless your daughters have had the same experiences that our daughters have had...numerous nights up writhing in pain, crying out wanting help and us parents not having any idea what to do, please don't try to tell us to treat them for worms. ...trust me, it's not worms. She's been treated a few times as another precaution and no change!!!

It's definitely not worms...well not in most case. If it were worms in my daughters case then she has had them for almost 9 years and been treated three times.

I am so glad I found this. My ten year old has been complaining about vaginal pain every 2 to 3 months for over a year now. She too can be very dramatic at times so its hard to sometimes gauge the level of her pain. Thankfully, when these episodes do occur, the pain starts slowly and builds and usually subsides within an hour. I know an hour can seem like a lifetime when you're in pain. I am so glad to know that she isn't the only one suffering from this. She too, has seen her doctor and had test run. And of course, nothing has been found. I just read in one of the messages of a condition/disorder that may be caused by hard stools, straining or constipation. So, this last time I asked her if she'd had a bowel movement earlier and she said yes and that it was hard. So, as of now, our next step is to adjust her diet to include more fiber and water. I don't know if this will help, but its certainly worth a try.
Apparently, this is a real condition/disorder so maybe its time for the medical community to take note and try to find out what this is!

Have you checked for pinworms? Small white worms move to the vagina area and cause this pain. My daughter has this, we have tried e
Reeses otc med but she keeps having the spasms. Dr says sheis too young for precription med but if it continues i guess we will have to try.

My daughter has been suffering from similar pain since she was 2 and she is now nearly 11. We have seen various Dr's, Paediatricians, Dermatologists, Paediatric Gynocologist....none of them have been able to give definative answer but it has been likened to Vulvadynia. She tends to have cyclical episodes which can last for weeks and then improves, with nothing for months. Always nighttime pain, it used to wake her from her sleep and like many of the symptoms mentioned it comes in waves and causes agony to her. It is not pinworms or constipation but the Dr has related it possibly to stress and stressful periods can certainly trigger a new cycle of pain. However I am not convinced it's solely this. We have stopped my daughter using perfumed products in shower, I wash her pants, towels and clothing that touch the skin 'down there'perfume free washing liquid- I have even looked at chemicals used in toilet paper and selected ones that are less treated. She does have to take Amitryptine nightly which has stopped her being woken from her sleep but its not a total cure. She sometimes sits on ice packs as this has helped particularly if pain moved towards anal area, as she has sometimes found. I was told it's a false nerve signal so although giving analgesics such a neurophen/paracetamol can seem comforting it actually has very little effect. We also looked at cognitive behaviour/psycho-symatic causes and have even used reward charts, etc to try and break cycle of pain, under Dr's guidance; again I wasn't convinced but it's worth being mindful that night after night for months it's not becoming a habit psychologically. Still searching for answers but someone needs to do more research as this is a genuine issue in girls but one that is hidden.

From everything I've researched it sounds like most of the people posting here have the same issue and it's pinworms. They can live in the anus and vagina. Even if tested negative it's often missed. Test again.

I have just found this thread. Did any of you find out any more? Did the problem stop? My daughter has been kept awake on and off for a couple of months. She finds it hard to explain how she feels - it's not pain, itching or aching but she says it is 'annoying' and makes her wriggle. She often ends up in tears. It's the whole vulva area. Happens only when lying down or sitting which makes me think possibly muscular. Doctor has no idea and says nothing pre-puberty development to cause it. My daughter is 8.
