I do beleive this, but ive had this problem for 10 years and im only 23..., I only weigh 120 pounds and i dont eat that much junk. Comparing myself to others I find that i eat well on average so , if food is not my problem then why have I had these pains for 10 years?

I'm 16 and I have been having the same issues for about 2 years. I can get to sleep and then about 2-3 in the morning I wake up with what feels like cramps in my upper stomach area. I've gone to the doctor and they can't find anything out about it. Stool samples didn't show anything at all. If I get up and walk around for a while it will help for about an hour and then they are back. I don't know what to do and it'd really annoying and painful.

Abdominal muscles.  When you go to sleep at night, you stretch them hard.  If you are tense, or not very flexible, this will be worse.  When you get up and move about, the pain will go away.  There is nothing wrong with you.  Try to stretch 5-10 minutes before bed time and in the morning.  Yoga or other stretching routine could help on long term too.  Do not eat at night before bed time, as this could add more pressure on your abdominal muscles.

This problem has been going on for years and still no solution!  I have a history of extensive endometriosis, adhesions (scar tissue) which affected my right and left pelvis, stomach (round belly button).  I previously had fallopian tubes removed in two ops as they were damaged by endo and scar tissue.  I then had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy where they found loads of endo and adhesions and removed as much as possible, due to proximity to bowel.  I went on to get more pain and discomfort (worse at night) after initial brief relief, so think endo or adhesions returning.  Today, years later I dread bedtime and take a cocktail of pain meds and anti spasmodics, stool softeners like Fybogel Merb and sometimes Lactalose as well as codeine based pain relief makes me constipated.  I even take a Senna at times if problem persists.  I have to take a sleep tab nightly to get any sleep at all!  They tried me on Amitryptaline which does help a bit but I find anti anxiety pills don't agree with me long term.  They give me terrible nightmares and I feel out of control and even more anxious if I take them regularly.  I have sometimes cut one in half and taken half a zopiclone and that can sometimes give me an extra hour of sleep.  Two years ago a CT scan picked up Diverculitis Disease and a small Hiatus Hernia plus it is thought I have IBS and a tilt prolapse (probably due to scar tissue from ops and adhesions pulling things out of kilta.  I am a very anxious person and with all these things together it makes life and sleeping really difficult.  I never know what is causing what and when!  Sometimes I wonder if food is a partial culprit and am starting to eliminate certain foods.  I had to give up red wine as it is so acidic but being veggie I think some veggies can cause trapped wind.  I do drink alot of Coca Cola (rather addicted, which probably doesn't help) but struggle to give up too.  At night I have a feeling of dread going to bed because I know I will wake several times with urgent need to urinate and if I hold it, it really hurts my stomach and pelvis.  I get a build up of right sided pelvic pinching pain and right hip pain which goes all round to my low back which also hurts.   Sometimes it goes down my right leg.  My stomach, pelvis, bowel, bladder and right hip and low back are all affected by pain, heavy pressure pain, bloating, trapped wind, flatulence, pinching and pulling.  I lie in bed in the wee hours (appropriate name) contorting in pain.   I pull my knees up to my chest, stretch my legs out sideways and at all angles to try and stretch out this tight pinching pulling pain and discomfort affecting stomach, right pelvis, right hip and low back.  I usually am forced to get up eventually and move about and have a strong coffee, which often gets my bowel going and I either have explosive diarreoh or if constipated with help of stool softeners and some straining can go - this helps a bit and takes some pressure off the whole area.  However, the right pelvic pinching continues and I am so achey in my lower back and hip and feel fatigued from poor sleep every single day!  It takes me all morning to get going at all!  The night has drained all my energy and this scenerio is repeated night after night, week after week, month after month and year after year.  They think after stomach injections didn't work to send me to pseudo menopause it is adhesions (scar tissue causing problems).  I had an op a few years ago to remove fallopian tube stump (removed) from ovary which had attached and ovary to bowel the other side and round belly button.  So there is plenty of history.  The Gyne last time said might be muscular skeletal, then also suggested if problems persist, a radical hysterectomy.  Last op so painful due to all the endo and scar tissue glueing me up the thought of radical hysterectomy scares me to death.  I would probably need bowel ressection too and the risk of creating even more scar tissue is quite a high risk so this op could make it worse, too big a risk i think!

So I am back to square one, there is no cure for endo and adhesions but in some cases excision or radical hysterectomy can help in others it gets worse!  I am menopausal now so endo should in theory not be being fed by oestrogen but adhesions are thought by Gps to still be a problem.  Complicated by Diverculitis Disease probably, not sure if the Hiatus Hernia (small) should be giving me problems!  Could be IBS but one gyne said it does not exist, it is an underlying gyne problem; another Gp said it does exist!  Maybe it is the tilt prolapse (mid high receoteole).  Well, whatever is causing all this misery, something all or part of these conditions are responsible.  I am completely at a loss and continue to live in this hell like pain and discomfort with no answers and only one route to go major terrifying surgery which may not work and could make adhesions worse.  Meanwhile, I pill pop and exist with pain and poor sleep.  Thanks for listening.  Any medical professionals out there who can throw any light on this complicated mess would be of interest.  (I am 54 now).

I have similar cramps in abdomen and back which seem to be there together . Im scared of sleeping as i know i will get up after 3-4 hours . Its been 5 nights now so my family doc suggested. vit B complex.  I am 60 yrs old very active earlier. This is nothing to do with any uterus prob as i have had an hysertectomy 10 yrs back and everything is fine.     Hope the vitamins do the trick. Ill get back if it works. Bye....

I've had the same problem as well. After a few weeks of changing my diet (tofu for protein, whole wheat grain, rice, and other easily digestible foods), my pain started to gradually fade away. I also realized that eating light food during breakfast (such as cereal), lunch (Ex. Salad) and dinner ( Etc. Rice) efficiently eased the pain. I would suggest taking some pain killers for several days before going to bed (make sure to sleep with better posture as in sleeping straight on your back) . This method has work for me effectively, and I've been pain free for several months.

Hi tim
I found these posts when i googles pain in lower left side at night and was shocked and somewhat comforted to read all of them. I ahve been experiencing this for 2 months now. I haven't had any tests yet but went to my dr. who didn't think i should worry about it. It is on the left side and one night I woke up with a crazy tooth pain and had a dream about my dentist. I got a root canal the next day for an infected tooth and thought that may have been causing the pain but no it is still here.

I wake up about 2am and it can be so intense sometimes I cant even move. I had tried elevating my feet but I will try tonight sitting more upright and seeing if this makes a difference.

For me the pain is mostly on my back left side like kidney, pancreas area so I suspected a problem there. Maybe gastro. I need to peruse this more but I feel ok during the day so I suspect no one will find anything wrong either which is really really irritating.

Anyway I wondered as it seems this post was 4 years ago if you had any luck with a diagnois or if this issue no longer concerns you?

Thanks,
Sarah

I've had the exact same thing! I'm a 24 yr old female. I've been to all the GI docs, had my gallbladder removed, colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and still have the same trouble sleeping at night (wake up 3-5 times per night) because of the pain and burning that radiates in my very lower abdomen, right and left sides, as well as behind the right shoulder blade and sometimes in my chest. It's horrible. Goes away after about 20 minutes of getting up and walking around. This sleep problem started when I got very sick with a viral illness several months ago, and it still continues. It has affected my relationships, education, and marriage. Let us find a cure! Everyone on this forum deserves to have a happy, normal, and productive life.

Wow! Now I dont feel so alone! Last June I started having bouts of naseau. In August I got a pain in my lower rit side that lasted five weeks.I went to my doc during that time and she wanted to call it cyclical but I was/am adamant its not.I could not sleep on my right side at all but when I would get up the pain would go away.In December this all started again! I have had pap smear, pelvec ultrasound both external and internal, another ultrasound to look at gallbladder, liver, ect and a hida scan. All came back normal.I am still having this pain at night and now sometimes it radiates across my whole lower back and sometimes it just feels like my whole midsection hurts.I cannot sleep on my back or right side.My doc put me on a form of prilosec  for two weeks. The naseau is gone but that my or may not have anything to do with the meds as it comes and goes anyway.I am so frustrated.I feel like I am missing out on my life.

I've never felt this kind of pain sense 2007 when I had my daughter, it started 3 nights ago.sever pain lower and upper abdomen front and back. But once I get to sleep I'm fine until the next night. With other female issues that become effected at the same time. I'll go to a doc if I have to but if its nothing I rather save my money.

I have the same problem.

I have had the same problem for several months.  It seems like the pain started after I quit smoking, possibly food related.  I am 5'10" and used to be 135 with a 6 pack, but once I quit smoking I gained 20 pounds and lost my 6 pack.

I am an 18 year old freshman in college and it's crazy how much this thread fits me.! Ever since coming to college I wake up at least 1 or 2 nights a weeks with severe stomach pain. It starts just below my rib cage, goes through my stomach and abs, and extends clear up my spinal cord. The whole thing feels like it is on fire. At first i blamed it on my crappy dorm bed, but even when I went home it happened. I went to the ER and all they told me was acid reflux. But I have cut eating and drinking anything but water 2-3 hours before bed but it never fails to happen. Sitting doesn't really alleviate much pain because of the pain up my spine. It baffles me that so many people have this problem but no one has found a solution.
