The symptoms being described here are most likely caused by a magnesium deficiency. I was having similar issues and they resolved immediately after starting a regimen of 500 mg of magnesium carbonate a day. The muscle spasms alone are probably harmless, but mg deficiency can cause loads of problems elsewhere in the body. In my case, the magnesium also helped me to overcome severe insomnia.

Best of luck.

I'm really curious about this, myself. I'm a 26 yo female. However I know it's not a pregnancy related occurrence as I've been experiencing these spasms since I was about 5, and my husband and I have never had any children. I've noticed they get worse in the colder winter months and if I do too much physical activity (i.e. running a couple of miles, running up and down stairs, exercising at the gym). Generally I have about 5 a minute throughout the day (though this number can increase or decrease depending on the amount of physical activity I do), and they're usually confined to the abdomen, but the stronger they get the more they spread out across my upper torso- into my arms, hands, and neck; sometimes even my jaw and thigh muscles. I've been to at least 5 or 6 neurologists and none have had a diagnosis.

I'm 20 years old and female. I've been having the same twitching/fluttering sensation for quite a while now, i think about a year ago i first noticed it. It went away but recently it's happening more often. It doesn't hurt at all and it tends to stay in the lower abdomen, left hand side. I find it quite hard to get comfy lying on my front or side at the minute as well, not because it hurts but it's just a really weird sort of tight sensation. Sometimes i also get awful pain just below my ribs on the right hand side. My periods seem pretty normal so nothings changed there. It's strange yet reassuring looking through all these comments, i hope we manage to soon get an answer.

And do you not think it would be easier for someone to figure out a few reasons when comparing say 50 peoples replies with similar problems rather than just that one person?
So come on then 'annon', do you know of an exact cause for this? or are you...and i quote..."too M*****C to figure it out"?

I have the same issue.  I seem to be having great luck with eliminating soda and candy from my diet...  and carbs too.  I am slim and work out alot as well....  I have also cut my coffee down to one cup a day and stopping fast food.  Also I am drinking alot of water (lemon and cucumber)and drinking peppermint tea.  I must say I feel better on so many levels.  And even if this doesn't help for this issue, it sure couldn't hurt  :)

May God bless America once again!

Chris

It is possible these abdominal twitches could be fasciculations. I get them in my abdominal area, and in my legs. They are caused by a variety of things, most of them harmless.

Could be associated with pottassium deficiency in the blood/body.
If you are on a water pill, this may be the cause. ALWAYS consult a licensed Physician.

This is very enlightening. I have had symptoms like this for a few years now and ties into my anxiety, caffeine sensitivity and GERD symptoms. I also get too little sleep. My heart also skips beats and speeds up/slows down at times. I wonder if BFS could include the heart / abdominal tremors I get. My doctor told me I just have an irregular heartbeat, sometimes. Very vague IMO.

I have had twitchy muscles on and off for about 2 years. The last time they were really bad I went the dr and he sent me to a neurologist. After several tests he said I was a healthy individual (male 31 yo) and that I just had BFS or Benign fasciculation syndrome and not to worry about it. I told him I was scared that it may be MS or some other degenerative disease. He said that while its possible for BFS to be an early symptom of worse things that 99.9% of the time its just an annoyance.

After that day I felt so much better. And I think because I wasn't so worried about it, it sort of just faded away. Of course it still comes back sometimes, like right now my stomach muscles are twitching, but I'm not worried about it. I have been stressed lately and drinking lots of caffeine, I'd bet that is the culprit.

I'm not saying don't go to the doctor, because BFS can only be determined after other things are ruled out, but I am saying that its MOST likely just BFS.

Hi!

Like many others I have had this also, center of the abdomen some inches below the navel and no pain. Anxiety or IBS seem unlikely in my case but Benign fasciculation syndrome would be a good start for troubleshooting. Thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately I don't have a solution either but I could at least share an interesting fact I found. There is a small muscle (or a pair) called pyramidalis that might be the one causing the spasm in this particular place. Its job is to pull on the linea alba (which is a vertical line in the center of the 'six-pack muscle') so I suppose it deserves to be placed higher on the list of suspects than gas or parasites having a party in your colon.

I have had abdominal spasms all my adult life, but I have always understood them to be related to my anxiety and some trapped trauma in my body trying to express itself. They come when I am feeling vulnerable, as if it is a symbolic reaction to an attack, which I have come to understand as developmental and relationship difficulties with my parents. I have started doing a little body psychotherapy (radix, ert) which has opened up all sorts of emotional turmoil I didn't really know I had. Contrary to my fears of doing this, it has been very liberating to find the words behind the abdominal spasms, which trouble me far less now.
