You'll start a bleed which can land you in the hospital with a transfusion and that's if it's a slow bleed and your drunk friends know what to do when you fill an entire sink with blood in under three minutes.... Your call oh and then they re cauterized while you're awake and it hurts like hell and makes it a thousand times worse....

I actually drank a whole bottle of wine the day before my tonsilectomy (less than 24HRs before the surgery). I was very nervous and spending time with my boyfriend so I wanted something to calm me down. I drank at least 5 glasses of orange juice that night though and woke up early without a hangover Thankgod. I ended up fine, so you can drink the day before the tonsilectomy. Just don't push it!

I know this is an older post but if anyone new looks at it - would like to shed some light. DONT DO IT. I'm day 5 post op, last night (day 4) felt really good - decided to join some friends for a cocktail. Not sure whether it was the vodka of the soda water but the first couple hours were fine, it was almost like it numbed me from the pain. When I got home about 3 - 4 hours later I was in horrible pain - like someone had taken a razor blade and just completely scrapped the inside of my throat. Nothing helped what so ever. Woke up this morning with the same pain. Worst then even day 0 post op. So my suggestion is no - stay away until you are healed. I learned my lesson and am definitely not doing it again.

They say after a week your risk of bleeding is gone because the wounds heal and the scabs begin to fall off.

NO!! Do not drink after a tonsillectomy. I'm 20 and went out for a few drinks one week after and had a "post tonsillectomy bleed". I was coughing up blood and had to go back to hospital into theatre. It was awful. I DO NOT recommend drinking.

Acidic liquids should be avoided (orange, cranBerry, lemonaid, Margarita Mizuno, etc). I thought a blended Margarita might help and the first 3-5 spoonfuls were fine, then it burned through the scabs in far back of throat below tongue and really hurt.

I called Dr. Next day. They said... NNNNOOOOOO! Absolutely not. I told them felt better days 2-6 than I did 6-12.

I was told this 7-12 day period is the time to be most careful... still NO scratchy food, chew all food up all the way and still no carbination.p and no hard alcohol.

I am thinking chilked white wine (which I rarely drink) as new years in days away.

If you have unwanted air and/or food entering your nose, you need to talk to your ENT doctor about it. You probably have velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). It can be fixed.
