Wow, I wondered why I was depressed and anxious my whole vacation in Florida. I had a cortisone shot on 2/1 and I started feeling anxious jumpy and a little depressed the week after while away and it lasted 3 - weeks. I do have a very sensitive adrenal system and suffer from anxiety and depression but 20mg of lexipro usually keeps it in check. Now I am starting to put it all together. I even said I don't care if I ever see Florida again. The bad news is I had a third cortisone shot yesterday for my plantar facsitis before googling about this. But now at least I know what was causing my feelings and can deal with it. I could be uncomfortable for another month but now I know there will be an end in sight. I asked my Dr twice about the cortisone and he said too that it was localized and shouldn't have any side effects. Wrong! and Wrong again!

In me, the cortisone causes rapid heartbeat, flushing, sweating and anxiety in flashes, and thins my skin so I bruise easily or for no reason at all. These side effects last for months after the injections. But they are worth it for the pain relief that enables me to perform PT and recover from my injury. My doc suggested antihistamines for the flashes. I started with benadryl but now take a claritin a day. Seems to help but I still get some, esp the anxiety and heart palpitations. On the last injection, she backed off on the cortisone and combined it with a nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory called toradol. For me it worked great with less side effects.

I got a cortisone shot today in my left knee. That's how I feel! I feel a rapid heartbeat, anxious, nauseous, slight headache and my leg hurts. I hope it goes away soon. I had no idea i was going to feel this way. I hope they don't last months. I use to suffer anxiety, I don't want it back !!

Hi!
I'm going through the same exact thing you posted about. I had a second cortisone shot in my back (the first one went very well) and for the last 3 weeks I've had the worst side effects, but the anxiety is the worst of them. Can I ask how long it took before the side effects were gone?
Thank you!

I'm sorry to hear that all of you are suffering from anxiety after your shots on myself suffer from PTSD and general anxiety disorder and had to have multiple shots in my lower back on two different occasions and it definitely increased my level of anxiety for matically for almost 3 weeks. I asked my doctor why this was happening because cortisone steroids that are being injected into your body increase your body's level of hormones and cause the chemical balance in your brain to alter slightly and it takes time for your hormones and chemicals in your brain to readjust back to normal levels unfortunately it's a very frequent side effect of any type of hormone or steroid injection into the bloodstream

I am going through this and found your post positive. I wanted to ask if you know of anything that makes it worse and did you have any tingling feelings around your scalp on your head?

I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. Yes, I did have tingling on my head. I can't really say if anything made it worse. Perhaps caffeine or stimulants might make it worse--I don't drink caffeine but I was so edgy I could imagine that making it worse. Do you have specific symptoms?

Yes I feel on the edge I am very snappy. I can't sleep I have lost 10 pads. If I do fall asleep it's only for 15 to 45 min. Even though I can't sleep and I feel very anxious I don't want to do anything or go anywhere and when I have to go I get a panicky feeling. What caught my eye with your message was crying to your husband. I have done the same exact thing. It's awful and I did end up going to the Doctor. She sent me to have blood work because of my stomach which when I have the mood swings my stomach cramps up and is very gassy. I just want it to go away.

Wow, so similar. I couldn't eat, I lost 14 pounds in 2 weeks. Awful stomach pains and diarrhea. (sorry TMI). Same--I would fall asleep for maybe 30 minutes max --then wake up startled and panicked--and would be wide awake. For about 7 weeks I lived on only a few hours of sleep a night, sometimes I would fall asleep around 4:30am and my alarm would go off at 6:30. Honestly it was hell. The anxiety was off the charts. Insomnia is one thing-it's awful. Insomnia with anxiety--a million times worse. And the same exact thing--I didn't even want to answer the phone. I was so panicked over everything. I had to go to Kohls and I almost had a panic attack. I totally relate to what you're saying. Please tell your doctor it's from the shot. My doctor didn't believe me at first. I looked up the side effects and I had them all--the ones that said "tell your doctor right away if you have...."
My doctor prescribed ativan to help me sleep but I had such awful anxiety and panic I was afraid to take them, afraid I would get addicted. I wasn't being rational. Perhaps your doctor can give you something like that to help you sleep. If I could do it over again, I would have taken the pills!
Anyway, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I can promise you--it will go away. It has to leave your system which can take 6-8 weeks unfortunately. But I did notice that after the first 3 weeks I had some good days, etc and I would sleep once or twice a week the whole night. After about 7 weeks it was like a light switch turned off--all of a sudden I started sleeping every night and the anxiety was gone. You'll be okay! If you need to vent let me know, I'm here!

You are so wonderful thank you! I started crying after reading this! This is me exactly! The doctor gave me zanex to help but Same as you I am scared of becoming addicted and mostly I am scared to death of it making it worse! My mind tells me What if it's the zanex? What if your making it worse? It does ease up a few days and then comes back just like you explained. The Doc is waiting on the bacteria test and then she said if it's not that she wants to put me on a temporary meds that will bring me to an even place. She promises it's only temporary and it's for anxiety and it's not a narcotic or addictive because I told her I doubt I would take the zanex because I am afraid. I got the steroid shot Aug. 9th on a Wed. By Sat. I started feeling not wanting to go anywhere by Sunday it was on full force. So I have only been this way for three weeks and honestly don't know how I will make it another 5! But it's good to know there is an end. Someone up in the threads talked about seeing threads that lasted a year. I just pray to God that's not my case.

I am going into week 7, this Wed. will be week 7 and yesterday was so awful. It was like waves of despair and head tingling. I wanted to ask you because you said your lasted around 7 weeks. Did you have real bad days at the end?

I did have really bad days, even at the end. And then one day, it just stopped. My pharmacist had told me it could take 6-8 weeks to get out of your system because it's a slow release.
Mine was 7, yours could be 8. I promise though it stops. Eventually the medicine is gone from your system. Hang in there--know that it's not you--it's real. And it will go away! And you'll be fine soon and put all this behind you. :)
