I've just finished a brutal soccer season. I've taken more of a beating than usual. I'm afraid my age is catching me and I'm trying to do too much.

Over the last several weeks, my legs feel dead when I run more than 2 miles. It's not painful, but I feel like I'm plodding along - like I'm running in deep sand.

Anyone ever experience this or know how I can fix it?

probably rest and easy running. Have you ever tried to figure out how much you actually run in a game??? I'm just curious. I thinking too that it isn't like easy paced either. I just know that my little one was really sore after his first 5k race (hey for an 8 year old it's gotta be like a marathon). He ran one 4 weeks ago and he wasn't sore at all, had a PR, and had done no running since his last 5k in January. I kept asking "aren't you sore?" he said "mom, you just don't realize how much I run at soccer practice".

I'm thinking now that you are done with the season, your body is healing all your microtears and this might be the dead leg feeling. I get this same thing when I take a severe taper for a marathon. I actually feel sore and sluggish, rather than rested.

hmmmmm.....maybe complete rest for a few days and a race

It must be catching. I've felt dead this week also. Three 40 mile weeks in a row for an old goat used to 25-28 mile weeks for years has worn me down a bit. I'm backing down some on the mileage this week just to give myself some recovery time. I know 40 miles a week isn't a lot to some people but I've been running 30 mpw or less for a long time.

soccer is a running game; you are logging miles gman and they are not easy miles....soccer is also fast becoming a more of a contact sport in spite of what the rule book says, i notice (especially in highschool boys) tons of shots being delivered, elbows, tripping...it all seems much too legal anymore..so yeah, if you are playing soccer with heart, you are getting a kickass workout. i've tried it and i've crumbled. (all i kept thinking is, holy smoke, this is waaaaaay harder than it looks) we have an over 40 guys league here and they are really serious with their left foot :umno:  to gman. soccer players are fit people. i'm still trying to figure out what "dead" legs feel like though...is it a dead from the waist down feeling kinda thing? sometimes, my legs feel numb, almost like they are in motion but i'm not feeling them...i'm assuming this is the dead leg thingy.

For me its when you want to get a faster turnover, you don't feel winded or particualrily sore, but for some reason your brain won't transmit to your legs. If it happens consistantly, I usually attribute it to overtraining. Reducing the number of quality runs or the overall number of miles for a week usually helps kick me back into gear.
And yeah, soccer is WAAAAY tiring if you are trying hard (and not playing goal ).

Dead in the sense they feel overwhelmingly heavy. I imagine it's just severe muscle fatigue.
I've taken several days off at a time from running the last few weeks with only practice and matches as my workouts, but I'm just not recovering during those breaks.
This is the first time I can recall being happy about the end of soccer season. :|
